If you want to avoid entering the hosting hell dimension, here are 10 potential entertaining glitches, and how to avoid them.
We hired A&A after getting a free quote for installing new water softner. Their workers were on time and provided great info and advice. We interviewed another company but A&A impressed us. NOTE: We also had 4 OTHER water service providers spiels - one even show up as soon as we pulled into the driveway an hour after we closed!! So we heard about 6 pitches total. A&A prices were comparable - we paid around $2.5K, which includes maintenance plan. Something that not all other pitches even mentioned. The same A&A guys (David & Abe) who provided the inital quote also worked on our softner and definitely put in the hours to get the job done correct and on time. They also informed us about the service plan that goes one step more with just installing a water softner - I'm glad we went their plan. None of the other pitches clarified as clearly the level of work or services need to maintain our system. In the long run, we have peace of mind and guanrantees with our installation & maintenance of our system. About 2 weeks ago I noticed a billing fluke and called the office. They fixed the issue quickly and efficiently. As a new resident to Texas, I'm very impressed with the quality of workmanship and professionalism of A&A plumbing and have already and will continue to recommend their services.
Call A-TEX first!!! This is a REAL review by a REAL CUSTOMER. A-TEX came out and fixed a leak in our front yard that was supposedly repaired by another plumber a few months ago. The first plumber gave us a 1 yr warranty for the work but when we called to tell him about the leak all we got were excuses and lies and eventually he wouldn't even take our calls. I called A-TEX and David and Anthony arrived to our home in no time. My husband had already dug the hole so the guys easily assessed the problem and showed us what was wrong and explained everything along the way even showing us what poor work the first plumber did. They quoted us an excellent price and even gave us a discount because my husband had already dug the hole. These guys are professional, courteous and give great customer service. You can tell they care about their customers and their reputation. They checked and rechecked everything before they left and even gave us a suggestion regarding packing the hole with sand which we wouldn't have known to do. I would highly recommend that you call them first and don't waste your time or your money for that matter on anyone else. I would definitely recommend them to others and will call them again in a heartbeat if I have other plumbing needs. Thanks A-TEX from a grateful and appreciative customer.
Like most of the poor reviews, this company was called out through American Home Shield to look at my leaking water heater. They diagnosed the need for a new water heater which was covered through AHS but insisted that is needed to pay almost $600 in out of pocket expenses including city permits. I mentioned that I live within the Bexar county but not in the city limits and therefore do not need require San Antonio city permits. The serviceman – who was very professional and friendly, called the dispatcher, “Melissa” to have the estimate adjusted. Within minutes I received an EXTREMELY rude call from her saying that if I felt the need to question their estimate she will cancel the installation of the water heater. This motivated me to insist on determining exactly what county requirements exist. I was told by the Bexar County Fire Marshall's office that county residents DO NOT require city permits, expansion tanks, drain pan, or drain lines on water heaters. In fact, there are NO mandates at all as long as it doesn't affect environmental concerns, (water heater disposal, sewage interference, etc.) I filed a complaint with AHS. After reading about all of the other AHS customers who complained about Immediate Response's price inflation, I have one question: WHY IS AHS STILL DOING BUSINESS WITH THEM?
The Vidorra concierge scheduled us for an appointment with O'Haver Plumbing, Ltd, to fix an issue at the unit we're renting (faulty pressure balancing valve on a shower we had never used before). First, we were unknowingly charged a $39 trip charge for a job that is 20 miles from their office in the same city. I understand the trip charge if you're charging for coming out and no work is completed, but if you're charging $89/hour for the repair and an additional $65 for the material, seems throwing a trip charge on top of the work is unnecessarily padding the margins - you're a business, get a good accountant who understands vehicle depreciation or mileage expenses. Second, they do not accept credit cards (I get it - they don't want to pay 3% for having a merchant account affiliated with each credit card they process - it would be nice though for the customer to know ahead of time). Finally, their website is not functional to voice a complaint to them directly, so this is my alternative. The repair was done correctly, so two stars are warranted in that regards, however it very well could have been a five star rating if these other issues didn't exist. Michael Lucas
I called four different plumbing companies trying to get a quote for the replacement of the Temperature/Pressure valve of a 40 Gallon gas water heater. Quotes went from $190 to $400 for a very simple repair. I finally resolved to call Lujan Plumbing, I got an estimate for $112 with a $10 discount that brought it to $102. I have scheduled for the next day at 10AM. The next day, Mr. Frank Lujan showed up on time and he have taken a look at Temperature/Pressure valve which surprisingly appeared o be working, but after further inspection he advised me that I should replace it, because when activated, it would leave a small stream of water would be leaking. I agreed with his decision, and he completed the work in less than 20 minutes. The old Temperature/Pressure valve was extremely corroded, and it would not have caused a lot of problems if I decided to keep it. Frank made sure that there is no leak, and cleaned the work area before leaving. I am extremely pleased with Mr. Frank's honesty, work ethics and professionalism, and I would like to recommend him for anyone looking for a professional plumbing service at a reasonable price.
I like working with Michael and Yolanda Ortega. Michael's a diligent plumber, comes promptly to do good work and gets the job done quickly and honestly and cordially. I've had him out several times to do different plumbing jobs--expansion tank for my water heater (recommended by a Home Inspector), cleaning out a slow tub drain, installing my new sink plumbing in the kitchen after a granite countertop upgrade we did with Costco contractors. When we had the new sink plumbing done, we first called Aramendia Plumbers because we had seen their advertising on TV. They came and estimated the job at $500 less a 10% senior citizen discount = $450. I hit the ceiling said "No way!" and almost threw them out for such banditry. I then worked with MagicService to find Ortega Plumbing. He promptly came out and did the same job for $164.00! Can you believe that difference in price?? Some of the companies out there will steal you blind if you let them. It's really nice to find a great personable and competent plumber like Michael. He's my plumber from now on!
I recently had the pleasure of purchasing a complete Trane heating and cooling system from your company. I wanted to take a moment of your valuable time to let you know how pleased I am with this system. It has made a tremendous difference in the cooling of my home. Moreover, it has lowered my electric bill by more than $40.00 in just one month. However, more important than the obvious monetary savings is the excellent customer service I received from your company. I was treated with respect right from the start. Your employees were truly interested in finding the correct system to fit my specific needs, and not just how much they could sell me. In this day and age finding a company that puts the customer in front of the dollar sign is becoming the exception rather than the rule. I applaud you for being that exception.
As they have for many years for us, Comfort-Air came out to the house today to check both our upstairs and downstairs heating units. Louis Huerta was both very friendly and professional. He asked me where we keep our extra filters, and when I said in the attic, he offered to go up to the attic to get them, although it was not an easy task. I can't remember the last time I experienced such over-the-top, wonderful, professional customer service. It's incredible that a Comfort-Air technician comes out, checks your heaters and changes your filters, and in our case climbs around two separate attics, and there is no charge (until the next visit in the spring). I highly recommend Comfort Air Engineering. You won't find this kind of service elsewhere! Stewart and Jan Wyland Countryside San Pedro
Daryl & Clay were at my house within 2 hours. Daryl performed diagnostics on my outside unit & determined it was a bad breaker in my breaker box- not my A/C unit. He explained that an electrician would be needed to fix the problem. He then scheduled an electrician come by the next morning. He reached for his invoice book as I reached for my checkbook. "oh, there's no charge" he said. "This is a FREE service call." Are you kidding me? Come on now. What's the catch? There WAS no catch. After getting my eyes poked out dozens of times by every trade imaginable, "Will"Fix It" goes "old-school" and sends out 2 professionals to help me & my family. Wow. Well done, guys. Thank you Daryl M. so much & good luck Clay.
This is by far the best plumbing company in San Antonio! Excellent service and affordable prices!!! I have tried other plumbing companys and they do not come even close to the Plumber Plumbing Company. Other plumbing companys I've tried wanted to sell me products that I don't even need and most important they wanted to charge me a arm and leg for those items. One company wanted 300 dollars for a garbage disposal. The Plumber plumbing company charged me a very cheap price and best of all a master plumber came to install it. Other plumbing companys have people who don't even have a license working for them! Do you even want to trust those people? I sure don't!!! I will always use this company for my plumbing needs and you should too!
If you own a house or commercial building, you're bound to need a plumber at some point. Here's a list of the different kinds of plumbing services you might need assistance with:
You might only think of needing a plumber when the pipes in your house burst. However, a plumbing contractor also installs all of those pipes, whether they're made of PVC or copper, in your building. Professional plumbing services also lay pipe in place for wastewater, rainwater runoff and even air conditioning systems.
Not only do they install pipes, plumbers set up sewer lines and vents as well as gutters, down pipes and storage tanks for residential and commercial facilities.
Just like getting a regular oil change for your car or truck, your home's pipes and water system also need regular maintenance and check-ups to ensure they're running right. This is why plumbers also offer upkeep services to test your entire plumbing system on a monthly or biannual basis to catch any issues with your pipes before they become an emergency.
This type of work spans from moving a water line or cleaning a sewer line to installing an ice maker or even a hot tub.
Most likely, you'll need a plumber in case of an emergency repair. Services can run the gamut from repairing a clogged toilet and leaking faucets to replacing whole water heating systems. Some jobs can take just a few hours while others might require a day or two of work if the repairs are extensive, such as replacing a hot water heater.
Other tough jobs could require your plumbing contractor to put his or her carpentry skills to work by sawing through walls to get to your pipes.
You can also hire a plumber to get the cost-saving advice you need. If you're interested in buying a new home or property, it's smart to hire a contractor or a plumbing service to not only tell you if the building's foundation is sound, but also if the pipes are in good working order. You wouldn't want to purchase a new house and repair the damage someone else did to the property. This is why many plumbers also offer consultancy work to check a facility's water and gas systems and advise home and building owners on best practices they can perform to minimize damage to their pipes.
Having plumbing work done, whether it's for your home or business, can be incredibly expensive. That's why it's vital for you to ask a plumbing service the right kind of questions before you hire them. You want to do as much due diligence on your part as possible to get a professional who will not only do quality work but also charge you a fair price for it.
It's best to hire a plumber to do a simple, everyday maintenance task for you first so you can judge his or her work. If you're happy with it, save their contact information so you'll have them on hand in case you need an emergency repair. This can spare you the extra worry and anxiety of having to track down a plumber if you have a broken pipe. Additionally, it can save you from being overcharged.
However, what should you ask a plumbing service if you've never even hired one before? Here are a few questions that can help you identify the professional from the amateur:
Are you licensed and registered?
Some states do not require plumbers to be licensed, but for the safety of your house, the people living under your roof and for your pocketbook, you'll want a licensed plumber to do the needed work.
A licensed plumber means the person completed the necessary education or training required to work as a professional tradesperson. Hiring a licensed plumbing service means the people working on your building are knowledgeable about water and gas pipes. If you use unlicensed workers, you run the risk of them damaging your home even further and endangering you by doing faulty work.
Check your state's laws beforehand, as hiring an unlicensed plumber could be illegal where you live.
Not only do plumber apprentices have to complete their training and education to receive their licenses, they also are required to pass a criminal background check and carry liability insurance. Hiring just anybody can make you vulnerable to fraud since unlicensed plumbers might not know what they're doing or could pretend to fix something and end up charging you for the incomplete work.
Are you insured and bonded?
A trustworthy plumber will have both commercial liability insurance as well as be bonded. The insurance and the bond protects the plumber from paying for any damages made to your house out of pocket. Having professionals that carry both of these policies can protect all of you from any mishaps that could occur while they work on your building. Remember, not all plumbers are the same and not all of them carry the necessary insurance and bonds to protect themselves and your home from damage or shoddy work.
How many years have you been in business?
Not only do you want a licensed and trustworthy professional, you'll want one who's been in business for a few years. More experience also means the plumber will have a prior work history you can check. A more inexperienced plumber might not have many customer reviews or examples of his or her work to show you.
What, if any, professional associations do you belong to?
It can never hurt to ask plumbers if they're part of a professional association, whether it's a state or national group. Being a part of a professional organization provides an extra guarantee that the person you hire is licensed and offers you a warranty for their labor.
May I have a list of references?
While it's advisable to ask friends, family and neighbors if they can recommend a good plumber, they might not have anyone you can call. With that said, it's best to ask a plumbing service for a list of references that you can contact to get a good picture of the kind of work their business does and if it's quality or not.
Before you hire a plumber, contact their past customers if you're able to. These people can be a wealth of information if you ask them the right questions. Pose the following queries to these former patrons when you get the chance:
Do you offer a written warranty for your work?
Whenever you make a large purchase, you always request a receipt, right? Well, you will want a written warranty for any work or repairs done to the plumbing in your house. You want someone that's doing major maintenance or repair work on your house or commercial building to stand by his or her labor. Before you hire a plumber, ask him or her if they offer written warranties.
Will I need a permit for this work?
If a plumber needs to do major repairs to your house, the work could call for a permit. You'll want this since a permit provides added assurance that the work is done correctly. Having this added measure in place means an inspector will check the work your contractor or plumber does to ensure he or she did the job correctly. If you ever plan on putting your house or commercial building on the market, a real estate agent and prospective buyers will also want to check any large work you did to make sure it was done properly.
To keep yourself safe from fraud or a possible scam, always remember to ask plumbers for their license along with a written warranty for their labor. Besides this, further safeguard yourself by checking their references and ensure they or their company is insured and bonded to do their work.
While it's smart to get maintenance work done on your pipes every once in a while, there are a number of prevention tips that will not only prolong the life of your pipes but also help you save on your water bill. Here are a few you should keep in mind:
Be mindful of how much water you use in your bathroom, kitchen and even outdoors when watering your lawn. Make sure your toilet handle works properly and doesn't stick. You don't want it continuously flushing. Replace your old shower heads with more efficient low-flow options that can cut down on the gallons of water you use each morning.
Simple things such as turning off the sink while you brush your teeth or only running your dishwasher or clothes washer when you have a full load to clean can make more efficient use of water.
You won't always need to call a plumber to help you fix a nasty clog if you treat your pipes right. Don't use your toilet or kitchen sink like a trash can by stuffing hard to flush material down the drain or pouring fats and oils down the pipe. Throw coffee grounds and eggshells in the garage instead of in your sink. Also, only use your toilet to flush human waste and toilet paper, because any other materials could clog your commode.
Frozen pipes are hazardous and can cause massive amounts of damage to your home. To prevent your pipes from freezing during the winter, run your faucets at a trickle and keep your house's heater at 55 degrees Fahrenheit or above to keep the water flowing.
Plumbing problems come in all shapes and sizes. The following are some of the most common, as well as how to fix them:
If you turn on your bathroom or kitchen sink in the morning to find brown or rust-colored water coming out of your faucet, don't panic. The discoloration is most likely due to old iron pipes or recent use of a hydrant or water main that disturbed the usual flow of water. Keep your water running for a minute or so and it should run clear after a while.
Leaky and Dripping Faucets
Having a leaking or dripping faucet can run up your water bill. To fix it, first shut off the water under the sink then remove any decorative parts of the faucet and replace the washer and O-ring before reassembling everything.
Your water heater could be the cause of a lot of issues around your home, from a lack of hot water to foul smells and popping sounds. Hire a professional plumber to take care of the more complex jobs that a heater can require. However, if you're having hot water issues, you can simply examine the thermostat and adjust it accordingly.
If you hear odd sounds coming from your water heater, it could be due to sediment building up. To get rid of this, make sure you clean out the heater every few months. However, if you hear a boiling noise, it could mean the heater is overheating and you should call a plumbing professional as soon as possible.
Drain and Toilet Clogs
Before calling a plumber, try to unclog your drains and toilets yourself by using a plunger. Make sure you use a standard bell-shaped plunger for your sink and shower drains and a plunger with a flanged end for your toilets. If neither type can loosen the pipe blockage, put a plumber's snake to use. Ratchet the snake down the pipe to eliminate any clogs.
