This place is off the hook, the wall and chain! We had the tripas, mollejas and cabrito! All were just as good as my own if not better. The rice was ok, nothing special about it and the same goes for the salsa, but the tortillas, the frijoles along with everything else including the service was awesome. It was just my wife and I but next too us was a table of fourteen. Their order was taken and all their food was served within a couple of minutes of each other. Our waitress was very tentative and kept up with all her tables. This place is now on my ""Must Eat"" list when ever Im in San Antonio. I hope they keep up their good work because Im coming back!

The uneven reviews make me think that some people do not realize there are 2 different Piedras Negras, the restaurant Piedras Negras De Noche, which is on the I35 acess road, and the Cafe, which is on Laredo St.
Piedras Negras De Noche was a 2 story building, til there was a fire, about that time they took over the old Pizza hut.
The food is Authentic Tex Mex, the service can be erratic, but partly because it is usually so crowded, And really, you aren't paying over what, $25 a plate,,,, and you want 5 star service? It is a family place, You just need to be assertive.
With the variety on the menu you should be able to find something you love, but if you don't want San Antonio Tex Mex, don't order the ""Mexican Plate"". That is the culinary equivalent of ordering a hamberger in an american style restaurant. the chef's best work is elsewhere,
Enchilaldas? try Verde o Mole...

We arrived at Piedras Negras as soon as the lunch menu opened, because we wanted quesadillas. Disappointed to not find them on the menu, we asked if it was possible to order them off menu. The waitress, once she understood what we were asking, was more than happy to honor our request. The beef quesadillas were truly mouth-watering. The chips and salsa that we had to ask for before our meal, not so much. Stale chips and bland salsa does not make a great first impression. Also, the waitress did not check on us as often as she should have, and we often went without drinks, which is never good in a Mexican restaurant. We'll be back next time for the quesadillas, but we may just order to go!
When every I am downtown and have time to eat I always head to "the rock" for a great meal. It does not matter what time of the day the food is always fresh and hot. No mater what you order you will not be llet down. The service is friendly and the owners always talk to you. It is a place that I tell people who are here from out of town and staying downtown that they have to go to. If you want San Antonio Mexican food at it's best this is the place. Not a tourist trap like the other big downtown places just good food at a great price in a clean and friendly place.

I went to this place for lunch on recommendation of a friend. I was blown away with the incredible flavor of the beef enchiladas, and the crispy tacos. everything is homemade (down to the crispy shell of the taco), and everything is exceptional. I would encourage anyone tired of the run-o-the-mill restaurants to take a trip to Piedras Negras De Noche.

This is my very first review, but Piedras Negras de Noche has been a staple in my family for decades!!! From the chips and salsa to the Tres Leches Cake, you'll love it all. The plates are enormous, the tortillas are better than homemade, and the vibe is quintessentially San Antonio--laid back, family-oriented, and inviting.
Our favorite appetizer is the Queso Flameado, or ""Flaming Cheese!"" It's melted cheese, seasoned with Mexican sausage, served in a tortilla. It is flambeed tableside and your dinner becomes an event in an instant!!!
My family's favorites are the Enchiladas Verdes (best in town!!!), the beef fajitas, and the Piedras Negras Dinner (a feast, to be sure).
Although great Mexican food and margaritas go hand in hand, the owners do not sell alcohol, which is okay. Feel free to bring your favorite beer with you and they'll bring you a bucket with ice.
Ask to be seated downstairs if possible. The service is good on both floors, but it tends to be particularly good downstairs.
Piedras is the perfect place for casual dinner or a celebration. ENJOY!!!

Being a connoisseur of TexMex, I firmly believe this is the pinnacle of the South Texas cuisine that has taken the world by storm. This is not authentic Mexican but rather, authentic TexMex. The people are friendly, food always great, and true to San Antonio, a laid back South Texas Mexican influenced atmosphere. For Authentic Mexican go to La Fonda on Main which has that plus very good TexMex, for TexMex done well but on the healthier side, visit the Austin Based Chuy's(2 in SA). But for the Real TexMex King, Piedras Negras de Noche is the place to be.
