I took my Cats to Dr. Ehrlund & her husband (now deceased) as a child and loved the care that they both showed especially when one of my cat's kittens had a condition that they couldn't treat that required us taking him to the vet school. I've recently reconnected w/ them and Dr. Ehrlund is just as wonderful now as she was then!!
I know that there are some reviews on the web that are negative about her but I think some of that may have to do with a VERY SELECT FEW of her office staff.
Beyond that, once you talk, CALMLY & RATIONALLY about any problems that you may have, Dr. Ehrlund is MORE THAN WILLING TO LISTEN & WORK OUT A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM!!
Recently when our youngest cat cut her right (wrist) front paw VERY DEEPLY during a time when we had some financial difficulties, she worked things out with me so that she adjusted the treatment course so that Patches still got the necessary treatment to allow the deep wound to heal but did so w/o hitting my pocketbook too hard!
I did have a small problem with one of her office staff when I came back to pick Patches up but as I wrote earlier, once I talked privately, CALMLY & rationally to Dr. Ehrlund, she took care of the problem and spoke with the staff member so that that problem wouldn't happen with anyone else again!
I think that much of the negative reviews on the web about Dr. Ehrlund are WAY OVERBLOWN. She really is an EXCELLENT VET who has been in continual practice in NW San Antonio for the last 30 years!!
WARNING DO NOT USE THIS VET; this vet office is covering for Kay's Kutz across the street. On May 1, 2014 we had a grooming appointment with Kay's Kutz across the street. When pet was picked up, we were "escorted" to this vet office to check pet out as he seemed lethargic. Pet was also favoring right front leg. Arrived, and receptionist exclaimed, "he's back!". WTF? Our pet was given medical treatment due to an injury from Kay's Kutz and an attempt to "cover it up" was in play because pet was already sedated from this office without our consent or knowledge. Then the Vet was extremely unprofessional and unapologetic, as if the condition was already in place before we took the pet in to be groomed. KEEP YOUR PETS AWAY FROM THIS VET. Full review of groomer in YP as well. The stance that the Vet took upon us entering clued me in on her covering up for someone's negligence; with the added belligerent attitude and unprofessionalism, it sure seems like she was in a hurry to get us on our way.
I’ve been taking my dogs to see Dr. Ehrlund and Dr. Wright for over a year now. Both of them are very knowledgeable and friendly. I started using them when I couldn’t get my dog into one of the large area clinics so I stopped in and got an appointment with them. My dog has had epilepsy, but was still having seizures on the medication. The doctors here understood the situation and switched him to a drug that is not only generic (less expensive), but doesn’t require expensive blood tests every 6 months. Since then, he has not had any more seizures. I’m forever grateful to them for helping us. They really do focus on the care of my pets instead of the bottom line!
On a recommendation i went to Dr Eurland. Had no problems, I felt she cared and understood as I am a doggie foster. No hoops just good care. I thought! About a year ago she kinda chastized me re: Costs for fostering. She told me she would get me in contact with a group that had funds. Never happened... Then I took in a foster with heart worms. I had talked with serveral people re: a slow kill method. Due to her advanced state I belived this would be, Yes longer but safer. I called her office and asked if they did this method, I was put on hold... Dr Eurland came on the phone and informed that yes she would treat Penny, but her statement was "this was "the poor mans treatment" I don't care. Then again I needed her servies. My 13 yr old LA had a life altering seizures. When I took her in they where kind and did what I have experianced over so many years. Then, The reason for this review. 2 weeks ago I called and explaiened Gizmos condition. He was brought to me when he was 12 years old, his owner had passed and no one in the family wanted a blind 12 yr old dog. I took him in 6 years ago. I have carried him in & out for the last 3 years. Ate well, let me know when he needed something. He has slept in my bedroom for the last 2 years. In the last 2 weeks his health has been failing. I never will let him or any of my dogs suffer. So I called the clinic again on Fri and told them I wanted to spend this weekend with him. By Monday he was not getting better. I called on Wed to make the Arrangements, gave them instructions and CC info. The appt was made for Fri between 4 & 5 pm. pulled into the parking lot, in tears. I called and asked if they had a room for me? after several mins I was told yes, and to come on in. I was led to a room with a nice red doggie pad. What happens over the next few minutes astonded and horrified me. My poor Gizmo..2 Techs came in with clipper, one held Gizmos leg as the other procedded to shave his leg, I'm like "what are you doing?" we are placing this port so as to make sure a vein is found and helping the Vet to administer the injection. I'm asking why are we doing this? I need Dr Eruland now. Her deminor was so lackluster, I am sick that I took him there. The techs even flushed his port. What the F. After the injection his heart was stll beating 8 to 10 mins later. I will never go to this dr again and I pray you don't either. Plus she charged me $20 more than the last and Shelby was bigger, But at least she did it the right way.
We are very sorry for the passing of your beloved pet, Gizmo. Euthanasia is always a difficult decision, but sometimes it is the last compassionate thing you can offer. Often pet owners prefer to be present during the procedure and we respect and allow that. However, pet owners that are not in the medical field may have some confusion as to why we take certain precautions. Pets that are euthanized at HVMC will have a catheter placed into a vein in their forearm. This is a safety precaution to prevent any of the medication from being injected outside of the vein if the pet were to flinch during the injection process. The result would be a painful stinging sensation and a failure to deliver the complete dose. This would be considered inhumane. To facilitate this process, a small patch of hair is clipped to allow visualization of the vessel under the skin and a catheter is gently placed and taped to the arm. Our goal is always to make the final momements as comfortable as possible for a beloved pet and their owner.
Where should i begin? i can see that i'm not the only one the Doctor is extremely rude to. But it doesn't stop there. They are over priced and below average service. The staff seams Incompetent . I have tried going to this clinic several times and its with the same results. I have found a new clinic FURTHER away from me but it is well worth the gas it takes to get their.
So in case you didn't hear me the first time here it is in a nut shell. The Doctor is rude, staff is rude, staff is Incompetent , over priced EVERYTHING.
i wish i could giver zero stars

This is a copy of the email I sent to Heritage Veterinary Medical Center about why I chose to take my business elsewhere:
First, please cancel my appointment for Saturday, April 16th; I am no longer in need of veterinary care for my cat as I have found what seems to be more reliable service at another facility.
I gave your clinic first opportunity because you are located closest to where I live, and I have always firmly believed in supporting neighborhood businesses; however, I could not in good conscience follow through with Heritage Veterinary Medical because of a ""comedy of errors"" that not only was not humorous but upset me because your employees seemingly did not care enough to think through the consequences of what became empty words/'promises', which resulted in a wasting of my time.
I first called about information on flea care for my cat on Friday April 8th and was told by ""Erica"" about the products that you carried and how the Frontline Plus that I had purchased was no longer effective because fleas had developed an immunity to it so I would need Vectra, which I could purchase at your office for $18.50. She told me that you closed at 6pm on Friday and were open from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday.
I came in around 5pm that same day and spoke to ""John"", who told me that I couldn't purchase that product over-the-counter since my cat was over 9 pounds, something I was not told anything about over the phone, which I let him know. I explained my flea problem, including what I had been told by ""Erica"" earlier in the day and wondering if it would just be better off if I brought in my cat so the doctor could examine him. He went to an area of the office out of my line of vision to talk with the doctor, who I could hear him talking with. Instead of using this vet tech as some sort of go-between, I had hoped the doctor herself might come out and address my concerns but obviously she must have been too busy (even though there were no other people/pets in the center at that time of day). I did not make a big deal out of this, since I was told I could come back tomorrow with my cat.
So I came back Saturday morning and was told by the desk receptionist that the vet was not there, that she only came in the first and third Saturdays of the month---something I was NOT told the day before. This indeed irked me because I was just at your office less than 16 hours previous. Also, this person at the desk said she could sell me what the other person the day before said he couldn't sell me; why is this???
When I asked this person the same question, she said all she knew was Advantix was the medicine that only the doctor could approve and that she could sell me up to three doses of this Vectra. If I wanted to see the doctor, I could make an appointment.
At this point, I was not only confused but upset as well; while the workers themselves were not unpleasant, there was an obvious disconnect in the information that these workers were supposed to know and share AND there was a glaring lack of forethought about telling a customer to bring in his pet on a day when the vet was not going to be working (this itself is somewhat troubling, since one would hope that a doctor would be available when the center was open---something the other vet center I eventually went to also thought was troubling, as their doctor does work on the same days the vet clinic is open).
I hope you will provide better service to people in the future and take my bad experience as a wake-up call to improve. In the meantime, I will take my business to a vet center where more time is taken to address my needs as a customer and a responsible pet owner. Know that upon my arrival at this rival business, each and every staff member made a concerted effort to answer my questions in-depth and help me find solutions to my pet's problem---unlike what in effect was token, lip-service by Heritage Veterinary Medical C

I am a new pet owner and recently Heritage was highly recommended to me. I took my new yorkie to visit Dr. Ehrlund and I was so impressed with her and her staff. I think everyone there is highly trained and there customer service was exceptional. I even started there Doggy Boot Camp Classes with my pet and not only have I learned the basic sit and stay , I am learning to get rid of that negative behavior that these courses teach. Now I know Pet Smart or Pet Co. cant give me that. This is more than puppy classes. This was a time well spent and so much fun. I even learned the instructor does this for a living trainging dogs that go to Iraq and other contries.I was impressed. Thank You Dr. Ehrlund so much. I will be back for sure!

I recently boarded my pet at Heritage Veterinary Medical Center. I have been a long standing customer of Dr. Ehrlund since 1981. I have always recieved excellent care for my animals. Dr. Ehrlund's kind a compassionate spirt has really helped our family over the years. I am sadden to see the response posted above. The person above may not understand that excellent patient care requires a good background check(i.e. labwork) prior to treatment. They should be ahppy that the staff was concerned for the well being of their animal and wanted to make sure it was ok prior to is surgery. Is this person really sure no one cotacted them? I have never experinced this from Dr. Ehrlund. The animals are kept indoors in one of the most beautiful boarding facilities that I have seen. Anyone can stop by and tour the facility and see the excellent & cleanly conditions the animals stay in. I have always had EXCELLENT Customer service.
