More than just ballet!

General Info

Ballet San Antonio Academy, formerly Mayra Worthen Ballet School, was established in 1984. The name change to Ballet San Antonio Academy came with the building of a new state of the art dance studio. The Academy, under the direction of Mayra Worthen, offers a professional training program in Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern and Hip Hop for those students wanting to pursue a career in dance, as well as a recreational program for those who want to dance for fun or exercise. Ballet San Antonio Academy is also home to a Pre-Professional dance company, San Antonio Youth Ballet.

The faculty of Ballet San Antonio Academy is made up of professionals who encourage artistic growth in their students.  These teachers have proven their ability to train professional dancers, and their goal is to continue the reputation for excellence for which the school has been noted since its inception.

Superior ballet training - the best in San Antonio! The school's director, Mayra Worthen, has a proven track record of more than 30 years of training students who have gone on to professional ballet careers with major performing companies. She also is the founder and creator of Ballet San Antonio, the city's premier performing company. Her instructors are excellent!! Stop by and try out or watch a class and you'll see for yourself.

We are new to this school and ...

We are new to this school and I have to say I'm very impressed. I called the school to inquire about classes for my 5 year old daughter and was really impressed with the amount of care that went into her placement. I was asked why we were interested in dance, what our goals for her are, and whether she has had any training before. After really listening to her needs and our reasons for selecting ballet for her a dance teacher and class was recommended. I had initially intended to place her in a weekday afternoon class, but after being told about the teachers and hearing their best recommendations for her I chose to go with a Saturday morning class. She absolutely loves it and the teacher is fabulous. I am so pleased with the entire experience thus far and will probably add another review, or amend this one, as time goes by but I cannot say enough about the individual care we were given and how happy we are with our class placement, the staff, and the atmosphere.

Do not believe the negative comments below....they must be fabricated or other dance companies posting false reports. I'm a real Mom with my 8 year old daughter who attends BSAA.
My daughter and I tried a lot of ballet studios before this one. We used the free trials with several schools. A friend recommended BSAA. Her daughter goes here and was chosen to be in the last 2 productions of the Nutcracker.
My daughter did not have ballet clothes to try the class in, she was just wearing shorts and a tee shirt. They asked if she wanted a ballet leotard and ballet shoes to borrow. She looked just like the girls in the class, not a try out. As I watched the instructor called the girls to class and she sat sooooo beautifully and the girls did the same. My daughter turned to me several times and mouthed "" I LOVE IT."" We have loved it ever since.

Pros; private dressing rooms for the girls, nice Moms and Dads, Super friendly staff, Rise bakery just across the street for an after class coffee or snack. We go on Saturday, and we usually have a Bday to go to so after Rise Bakery we go next door to Toy Werks for a toy. It's just perfect!

Cons: NONE!! We LOVE IT!!!

Nothing out there better than this one!

I have done much research on a ballet school for my daughter. After looking all over San Antonio, I have found Ballet San Antonio Academy to be the perfect place for her. Not only are the instrucors well-educated and professional, but they genuinely care about the total well-being of my little girl. The director is hands-on and approachable, always a warm smile. We have enjoyed the program immensely, and you won't find a better value for your money anywhere.

Please read more - before you judge.....

I have lived in 3 different states and trained as a dancer - as well as received a degree in Dance. Now raising my own children - I can honestly say that some of the best instruction I have seen across the country - exists here in San Antonio.
Sure sometimes there can be challenges, but you get that everywhere you go.
Dollar for dollar - well worth the technique and training my children are receiving.
A strong disciplined program - that is always rewarding for the kids.
Check out Ballet San Antonio Academy - it's more than just ballet too!

quality isn't there

We pulled our daughter out for a different reason. We were very disappointed in the quality. They have very low expectations of the students. Much of the lesson time is wasted (they start late and fuss around with music and allow students to come in late which disrupts everyone) and they don't learn nearly as much as they could be learning. We attended the ""demonstration"" and came away shocked at how bad it really was.

Not recommended

We pulled both our daughters from this school last December after we had had it with the rudeness. So many other good schools. This one is just so-so and not worth the aggravation. Visit a few and make up your own mind.
