I am reviewing this place without a membership there. I am most likely planning to purchase a membership next week though. I had read some okay reviews and am looking for a gym close to my place that offers classes such as Zumba, weight/cardio combo, yoga etc. I am also more comfortable in an all female environment because I feel more comfortable. I stopped by without an appointment and was happy to see that you either have to have a key or be let in to even get in the front door.. A nice safety feature for a 24/7 gym.. But I was a little thrown off to have a guy greet me as I came in. I filled out a release form before starting a tour, and the guy (personal trainer) asked mr questions about my interests in an exercise program before starting my tour. The place was on the small side, but it was not crowded at all when I went (late morning), but I assume it fills up a little more in the evenings. The equipment appeared to be in good condition, and all of the cardio machines had a their own decent sized LCD tv monitor in front of them. There was also a cardio room with a "theater" in which a movie was projected on the wall to watch while doing cardio. The movies are suggested by the customers and the same movie is looped for 24 hours (calendar or movies us on the door). The tanning area looked nice enough with a standing booth and bed, but I cannot tan because I have a bad reaction... The locker and shower areas were nice, but smaller than I expected, and the sauna looked clean and well kept. You could even schedule a massage or nail appointment for a reasonable rate. The child care center looked nice enough, but there were not children around at the time, so I did not get to see the place in action. There was also a cycle room for classes that had plenty of bikes. As I said, I was originally thrown off guard by the male personal trainer, but he was very professional and polite. He answered all of my questions and provided me with the rates in a very soft sale low pressure way. It was refreshing not to be bullied into signing my life away when I first walked in the door. The atmosphere seemed relaxed, safe and great for my purposes. They even sell protein powder a few other goodies and have customer appreciation sales. I am using the three day free trial to see what the classes are like at different times of the day before I commit. There is only one group class room, so I want to make sure that the classes aren't too crowded.. But anyway, the place is a nice, safe, well kept gym that is a little small, but relaxed and peaceful enough to make you want to come back. And I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the soft sale. I am so much more likely to join than j would have been if I felt pressured. Two thumbs up!

Thank YOU Sensai My story starts at age three watching power rangers in front of the tv learning the movies and what not until i was inrolled in talamantez karate. then i relize i was some where that i felt proud, confident, and loyal. i felt that every time i talked about karate i felt part of the talamantez family. Training harder then any other student i could see. beside my instructors left to right i felt that this is one of my greatest accomplishments in my life. i trained till i was 7 then i had no choice but to leave under my life style and the constant moving. after that i felt empty, and like a lost soul... Until the age of 16 i was passing by the studio on bandera rd. and saw it was open. i stepped in side bowed and i saw sensai perez, flashbacks came to me as i saw him. we talked and decided that it was time to come back. as he spoke with Master T it gave me the thrill to see my master once again. so he invited me to stop by the studio on redland. so the next day i was off. we got lost but we mange to find it. as i walked in i saw a some what bald man and got scared but "never judge a book by its cover" he is one of the nices man there Sensai Wurth. he is excelent with children any age. then i saw Master. Master T still looked as he did i can tell it ment alot that i was coming in to see him. when he dicused how it will work i was inshock! i was just a boy the day before and then i was a boy with life and meaning and a purpose. which is to bring peace to many people. when i did my first class i was smiling constatly. and when i left i cried to myself saying"im home" it is a very emotial experience for me beacuse i was so lost in the world with out karate. As of right now i am 17 and i am the coach for XMA( EXTREME MARTIAL ARTS) and i enjoy doing it. i also train with two OUT OF THIS WORLD AMAZING INSTRUCTORS like Sensai Griggs. She is the most positive, proud women i have ever met, she is also a great person to talk to. Then there is Sensai Alex Talamantez when i was younger and until now he has been my greatest insperating in my life i think of him as my father how he train as a child thats how i want to be trained i will go the distance for this instructor no matter what. when he pushes me i know its for a purpose and i respect it . my goal is to spare with Sensai Alex win or lose i will be proud beacuse i know it is a honor to spare agenst him. please if anyone reads this please call Talamantez Family Karate they might just change your life for the best like it did for me.
We have been members of Victory Martial Arts - Leon Springs since April of 2012 and I can't say enough about how much we LOVE this Martial Arts school. Originally we called to sign my 2 1/2 year old son up because he was at the age to begin activities and Martial Arts had always been an option my husband and I had considered. At our first introduction, the instructors asked us what our goals were for the classes, areas of improvement, etc. and we said things like discipline, physical fitness, flexibility, self confidence, concentration (listening skills), etc. The instructors went through a short demo with both my son and my daughter (5 1/2 years old) who also expressed interest. Then we signed them both up. Let me tell you, my husband and I have been so impressed it's hard to express in words. Victory Martial Arts - Leon Springs (as well as all the other VMA School instructors we've been introduced to) has more than delivered! Our children have improved 1000 times in the areas we discussed + some. Not only have our children benefited from the program, but my husband and I have as well. Since we signed up as a family (2 members = family plan) all 4 of us are able to attend the classes. They have kids only classes, family classes where you can participate with your child, and adult only classes at all times during the day and evening to easily fit your schedule. You can attend as many classes a week as you want (recommend at least 2) for the one price. If you ask me this is a total bargain, especially if you take into consideration that no other activity we've had my daughter in (dance, gymnastics, music, etc.) allows for the entire family to attend every day of the week for that one monthly price. And, this is the ONLY activity my daughter has not fussed about not wanting to attend (as young kids typically do). The high level of positive reinforcement really works. The instructors (Mr. Turner, Ms. Collins, and Ms. Sammon at Leon Springs in particular) are professional, caring, engaged in each individual's improvement, and lead by example. We are forever grateful to have found Victory Martial Arts for our family!
So I had to say a few things! First off thank you bella for helping me lose 8 dress sizes! I have been a member for about 2yrs now and am very pleased. The reason I'm writing this is I read a review that I just had to comment on. Let me give you a little history on me and bella. When I signed up they did ask me to start working out asap and I did. I did join that day because I was ready for a lifestyle change. I can definitely see how this could put someone off though. In reality, I had shopped at 2 other big gyms prior too and thought about it, left, and never came back. Bella gave me a little push which for me I needed and got me results. I bought a 1yr membership and paid for it up front with my personal trainer. I worked with the personal trainer for the first 3 months of my membership and saw really amazing results. I like the fact that the trainers are female and are my age and have actually been in the same situation as me years before. This was the best investment I ever made and I was really impressed by the knowledge the trainer gave me and how it could apply to my daily life. Overall this gym is great for first timers like myself. Over the years I have gotten to know the staff and feel like its a community and I like that almost all the staff know my name and take the time to talk with me anytime I have a question. I would highly recommend you at least form your own opinion and check it out yourself. They give out 7 day passes like water :) I encourage any ladies to just come in try it out, talk to the members, the staff, and hopefully you will be as happy as me a few month from now.
My adopted son is 4 years old. He was born addicted to heroin. Unfortunately, little ones born with a drug addiction often have problems such as ADHD, learning disabilities, and other behavioral problems. I could not get my son to listen or be responsive to direction. We walked by Victory Martial Arts and my son wanted to watch the class. One of the instructors gave him a 30 day trial pass. I was very hesitant because of the issues he was having. I spoke with Mr. Turner and he didn't seem worried in the least about enrolling my son. I went ahead and signed him up. Within a matter of 3 weeks, I already began to notice very positive changes in my son. He listened better, and was starting to respond to direction. It has only been two months since he started and I am happy to report that the progress continues. He is more respectful and has stopped virtually all aggressive behavior. Mr. Turner is amazing! He has done more for my son in several weeks than behavioral therapists have done for him over the last year and a half. My husband and I are very grateful. Every parent of a VMA student with whom I have spoken, tells a story of the growth and development of their child since joining VMA. I would suggest to any parent who is considering VMA for their child, to enroll him immediately and watch with amazement how your child grows. This is simply the best decision I have ever made. It is an investment in my son's future and I know he will be successful!
Heavy Metal Fitness is the best gym in San Antonio....and one of the best, if not the best, in Texas. I've been a member of many globo-type gyms (i.e. Golds, 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness) and while those are nice, the quality at Heavy Metal Fitness with regards to equipment and atmosphere is unparalleled. Tim & Michelle (the owners) are always welcoming to anyone interested in improving yourself, regardless of whether you're an experienced lifter or brand new to any form of exercise. There are a wide range of members with varying fitness goals, from the basic gym goer who just wants to get in better overall shape to the more dedicated lifters who train to compete in the strength sports of powerlifting or strongman. In terms of a real No Judgment Zone, this place is it. If you want to get better, everyone is willing to give a helping hand. This place has everything you need, and a lot of items that you simply won't find anywhere else. Some items include: 2 x Elitefts squat racks, Glute Ham Developer, 45 degree back raise, deadlift platform, several standalone benches, tire flip, multiple sleds/Prowlers from Elitefts & Rogue, battle ropes, bands & chains, Texas power bars, Elitefts Safety Squat Bar, Cambered Bar, trap bars, Apollon's Axle, concrete Atlas stones from 145-250 lbs, multiple medicine balls from 2-12 lbs, dumbbells from 5-100 lbs, Farmers Carry, Jump boxes from 6 to 60 inches, etc.
I would like to say that Spectrum has been a great experince for me. A great way to be sociable and meet other people. Although I have to say that seeing the same people gives you a sense of trust and family feeling. I wish there where more in the Daycare area. I see that the daycare area has all new people..young people..who need more training on how to handle all ages at the same time. Because of a careless mistake on their part..and lack of supervision to my child I fear the safety for my child and others.. this gym needs cameras in the daycare area as well as people who actually have children to be sitters for the daycare area..These are kids watching kids in the daycare and it needs attention before a child looses his/her breath and no one sees why. Instead of vaccuming and cleaning before the gym closes while children are still in the room, they need to do they job they are paid for. I was glad I saw what was going on and the look in my sons eyes that we needed a change. Ive decided to switch locations and hope the next one is MORE responsible in the Daycare area than this one. ALL PARENTS KNOW THAT WHEN A CHILD CANNOT SPEAK YET, IT GIVES THEM A BIGGER ALERT..IM A PARENT, IM VERY ALERT OF MY SON AND HIS HEALTH AND HAPPINESS...ARE YOU??? Thank you for listening.
I also put a review on Yelp. I enrolled my oldest son (8 yrs. old) into JJK Hapkido a few weeks ago. He immediately fell in love with it. Two days later, I enrolled my 5 yr. old and he fell in love with it. I then learned that this school had a huge discount for family memberships, plus it allowed us all to attend every weekday if we wanted to so I couldn't pass up the opportunity and I enrolled as well. When I was twelve, I was an excellent Tae-kwon-do martial artist and I thought that what I learned then was a ton of information. I was wrong. What I have learned in the first two weeks in Hapkido has been more effective techniques than I had learned in the years I was in Tae-kwon-do. And now, I am in love with this style. It includes ground defense, joint locks, pressure points, punches, kicks, grappling, and includes weapons defense (guns/knives). In other words, it is a very practical, realistic, and effective system that is far more than I expected. I recently discovered that this style of Martial Arts is taught to military special forces as the foundation for their combat skills and to law enforcement as a foundation for apprehending and subduing suspects. I highly recommend you check out this amazing school and instructor.
Looked around alot for a good clean gym found Anytime Fitness near my home. Joined last year for what I was paying at Specturm, when it was time to renew I found out that some other member rates were alot lower from talking to others in gym. They do not have a standard rate with everyone. So it depends on the person who sells you the membership and the time of the year. Gym is clean compared to most, could be better. I like that its not crowded. Had a bad experience with one of the trainers who I talked to just briefly about a workout plan. I signed up for 10 sessions with him. I felt he was not educated enough, and I could have gotten better workout myself. I felt I wasted 10 sessions with him. My overall experience has been just okay, cleaning could be better, the training staff could be more up to speed. There are a couple girls that train there that appear to be on the ball, but the rest of them I wouldn't waste my hard earned money on. It is 24 hour access which is the best thing since I work alot of hours, and its good to be able to go to the gym at night or on weekends.
My family has been going to DCMA for a year now, I'm a pre-school teacher and could not be more pleased with the Academy. Before we attended DCMA we "shopped" around. ( and we went to quite a few places) We couldn't find what we were looking for, if the instructors were good they were WAY too hard on the kids, if we liked the atmosphere was good the Instructor had his students teaching the class and never came out of the office, and some just did not have a good feeling to them. But from the very first day we walked into DCMA it had a very "FAMILY" feeling. Everyone is so nice and willing to help, teach and LEARN. Which we feel are very important values we want our kids to learn. No matter what color belt at DCMA, everyone has something they can contribute to our FAMILY. I STRONGLY recommend that you stop by and take a look, cause no matter the age, skill level, gender, or learning abilities DCMA has strong instructors that can meet the needs you are looking for. Cause when you join DCMA your not just joining an academy your joining a FAMILY!
