Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which can over time lead to vision loss and blindness. The optic nerve is a bundle of over 1 million nerve fibers, analogous to a cable that transmits signals from the back of the eye to the brain. Glaucoma is associated with the death of these healthy nerve fibers over time. Initially, this leads to loss of peripheral vision which most often is undetectable to the patient. As the disease progresses it affects the central vision at which point substantial damage to the optic nerve has already been done.

Dr. Michelle C. Liang is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Tufts University School of Medicine and a vitreoretinal surgeon at the New England Eye Center in Boston, MA. She graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Biology and earned her medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She performed her residency in ophthalmology at the New England Eye Center at Tufts Medical Center and went on to complete a highly-regarded 2-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the New England Eye Center and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston.

Laser Eye Surgery
A retinal detachment can occur at any age without cause. There are certain factors that can increase oneâ€™s risk of having a retinal detachment. These include being highly nearsighted, recent eye surgery, trauma, a history of prior retinal detachment, a positive family history of retinal detachments, and disorders/defects of the retina such as lattice degeneration.
Cataracts
Many patients think that a cataract is a film that spreads over the surface of the eye. Some patients are even concerned that cataracts will make them go blind. In reality, a cataract is a naturally occurring change in the lens of the eye in which a gradual clouding makes vision less sharp over time. Patients typically report the sensation of looking through wax paper. They often have trouble driving at night and colors become dull. As you already know the eye works much like a camera and the lens must be clear to see well. A healthy transparent lens transmits light and accurately focuses it onto the retina, providing a crisp clear image. As the eye ages, proteins begin to clump together within the lens forming opaque clusters. Over time these protein deposits eventually cloud the entire lens limiting the amount of light that can pass through. Further, this light is scattered creating not only a blurred image but glare as well. Just as the lens can change in color as the cataract develops, the colors of the world we see can change as well.

Thyroid
Inadequate tear production, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is due to decreased function of the lacrimal gland and can be associated with immune dysfunction, connective tissue disease, or thyroid disease. Hormone changes, especially those associated with pregnancy or menopause may result in dry eye. Poor quality tear film results in increased evaporation of the tears and is often associated with blepharitis or meibomitis, inflammatory conditions of the eyelid and associated oil glands. Symptoms of dry eye may also arise if the eyelid is not properly positioned against the eye.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Anyone who has diabetes is at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. The longer someone lives with diabetes, the greater the potential damage to the retina portion of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition of diabetes that is caused by changes to the blood vessels in the back of the eye. When blood vessels in the retina are damaged they may leak fluid or blood. This can lead to visual blurring or distortion of the images that the retina sends to the brain. In more advanced stages the disease can lead to blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness for American adults.

Plastic Surgery

Ulcer
A corneal ulcer represents a breakdown in the surface cells of the cornea accompanied by an infiltrate. An infiltrate appears to be a whitish opacity in the eye, but in reality, it represents a collection of white blood cells. Ulcers can be infectious or sterile (non-infectious) in nature. Your ophthalmologist can distinguish between the two forms and treat you accordingly.
Eczema
Blepharitis and meibomitis may be caused by chronic infection, most often from Staphylococcus or Demodex. Blepharitis may also occur as a form of eczema, or as a manifestation of rosacea.
Fungus
Most infectious ulcers are caused by bacterial organisms and therefore most ulcers are treated as such until proven otherwise. If an ulcer is small, it is typically treated without obtaining any cultures. If an ulcer is large, your ophthalmologist may choose to obtain cultures for further evaluation. Culturing the cornea is a way of identifying which organisms are responsible for the infection. While bacteria are the most common culprits, an infection can be caused by a virus such as herpes or a fungus or even a protozoan. As a rule of thumb, infectious ulcers tend to be extremely painful and rapidly progressive. Risk factors for infectious ulcers include sleeping in or wearing contact lenses for extended periods of time, improper cleaning or handling of contact lenses, having a history of dry eyes, or incurring any trauma to the cornea among many others.
