A friend and I had a marvelous experience at Bar Italia in the Central West End in mid-July. The weather was so uncharacteristically nice for St. Louis in summer that we dined outside next to the lovely real grapes hangin on the vine behind us as we watched the sun set into Forest Park. Our server, Drew, steered us toward several scrumptous dishes: a bruschetta, basil, dried tomato covered bread appetizer followed by a fresh multi-greens salad coverered in a zesty dressing of light red vinegarette-olive-lemon and "secret" spices leading toward a main course of Wild Alaskan Salmon and fresh Yellow-fin Tuna. C'est Mangnifique! We had such a great time that we asked Drew to introduce us to the owner. (Drew wasn't sure where we were going at that point). The gracious owner sat with us and shared his insights on being in the CWE the last 25 years then treated us to a marvelous round of Mango and Strawberry gelatto and a chocolate gelatto. Thanks Bar Italia for one of the best nights of the summer. Bar Italia does it right, and you won't regret dining there! Go tonight! ;-)
After Starbuck's on Broadway closed in October, I was looking for another place to get my morning coffee when I came across the Benton Park Cafe on Arsenal (across the street from Gus's Pretzels) First thing I noticed was a very attentive host welcoming me to the establishment. I ordered a Highlander Grog coffee and a small pastry to go. The atmosphere was very inviting and I found myself wanting to stay for breakfast, albeit I was already late for work. This cafe is very relaxing and laid back - a place I would recommend (and have recommended) to anyone sick of the chain coffee stores and cookie cutter breakfast places. I have become a regular customer for coffee and the occasional breakfast burrito. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys a mix of great coffees and "real" breakfast food. Next...I'll have to try their lunch and dinner menu :) Paul
I love walking into the cafe every morning, greeted by such a warm staff and the intoxicating smell of Kaldi's coffee. Their lattes, smoothies, teas, and drinks are always perfect, even if you make quirky requests. The food is delicious, and the ability to mix it up, even create your own is awesome. They are very prompt about their service, on a busy day you will be in and out in no time, they are amazing. I don't work there, I'm a very happy, very loyal customer that frequents them everyday. Thanks for great service guys.
Adjacent to St. Louis university campus, I found Cafe Ventana. Being a student and centrally located to my housing, I gave it a try. A great combo coffee house and DELICIOUS SOFT MEALS. FRIEND, do you need an excellent place? Then Cafe Ventana is the answer. They have a nice patio if you have a larger group. I have been there with my fellow students for study sessions and the think tank is a perfect accommodation. Great prices and the best beignets outside of New Orleans.
This place is totally awesome. The baked goods are always on point and their iced coffee actually comes with cubes made of coffee! If you are grabbing lunch there, lavender lemonade and any of their quesadillas are fab. They have free WiFi, but you can't take advantage of it on the weekends (which I totally understand), but if you are dropping by on a weekday I suggest you bring you laptop and work through breakfast and lunch!
Closest coffee shop to SLU - the Cafe has a variety of seating options including cozy, comfortable seating around the fireplace on a chilly day, outside patio seating for warm sunny days and the Think Tank for study days when you need a place to study with a group. My fave is their coffee and beignets - they were excellent and reasonably priced. The black bean breakfast burrito is an excellent choice for breakfast!
If the smell of fresh brewed coffee isn't enough, the aroma of breakfast wraps and other delicacies will make you light headed. One taste of the food and experience of the atmosphere will keep you coming back to this quaint coffee bar and cafe again and again. Like coming to a good friends house with great food and no dishes to wash.
This is a great little Starbucks. The drinks are well prepared & the pastries are fresh. The staff is friendly & gracious. They have whole coffee beans & the barista is knowledgeable about them. It's a nice place to enjoy a cappuccino & pastry. Take home some whole coffee beans to make your visit complete.
I enjoyed the food and happy for some vegan options. I had the vegetable curry - Great flavor even though I usually prefer a spicier dish. The hummus was really nice and very fresh. My only criticism is the bartender was inexperienced but his enthusiasm helped to make up for it.
Always open(no not 24/7)but very early to really late, always great coffee, always friendly service, and sitting in their backyard patio is like a mini-retreat. And if you have a sweet tooth, beware the Gooey Butter Cake in many flavors!
