My husband and I both enjoy eating sushi and I am usually in once a week or more to pick up dinner. I generally stay and have a cup of sake at the sushi bar, order and wait for my food to take home. I like to watch it being prepared and see what is new. The place is mom and pop, owed by a young couple who work hard and one of them can be found there all the time (he is generally the sushi chef). Their English can be choppy, but they are warm and care about their restaurant and customers. They often give me something new to try that I have never experienced before. I read the comments from the person who has had sushi on the west coast, it is true you get two pieces for less then the price of one here (and most anywhere good sushi is served in Saint Louis). I do find the pieces here a nice size and always fresh. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. The service can be slow, but each dish is prepared to order and I have always found it to be worth the wait and the staff is always friendly and kind. I have eaten at all the other sushi restaurants in the area and this is by far my favorite. If we are not in the mood for sushi, there are alot of other wonderful things on the menu to try. If you are feeling adventurous, ask the sushi chef to decide for you, I have never been disappointed. If you have a little time to relax, I highly recommend.

I was there this afternoon. Service was slow/awful and food was just ok. Never been in my life when I ordered sushi, it only comes in ONE piece. Is it a St Louis thing? I have been having sushi all over the world including in Tokyo, but never in my whole life sushi is ordered piece by piece instead of two?! And I don't think it was mentioned on the menu either. So a piece of hamachi cost me $3.45?! I had better and fresher sushi in California at this price for 2 pieces!! Service was extremely slow. First of all, it took them 15 mins to take my order. Then 30 mins for my food to come. Then when the food comes, there wasn't any chopsticks or napkins. Then another 5 mins to catch their attention before I started my lunch. The table next to me had their ordered messed up. But they didn't care to change it as they were starving. So, needless to say, I'm not going back again. Nor would I recommend this restaurant to anyone I know of or anyone who has a short lunch break. It has the potential to do better. Maybe an extra helper and sushi chef would make a difference. Okay so I felt compelled to leave a comment after reading about that one indivduals bad experience with poor customer service- I live down the street and eat here maybe once or twice a month. I'm a big sushi fan and I have no gripes about the food- and this is coming from someone who grew up in Seattle where sushi and uber-fresh-fish reign supreme... Anyway, yes it's true they are a little slow with table service but I think that individual's experience is the exception and not the rule as every time I've been in the service has been curteous... It stinks that person had bad service but overall this is a great little joint with a friendly staff who get my order right every time (I consider myself a picky eater). If you're interested in sushi- I say give it a go as the food is pretty good, the prices are reasonable for sushi in west county, and the wait staff are nice people. Cheers!

Though this was my very first time having sushi, I enjoyed it very much. Ichiban offers a great variety of different sushi and other Japenese dishes for all of its customers. The food was absolutely delicious. It is a place where a family and friends could have a wonderful meal. The interior of the restaurant matches its theme wonderfully. The staff at the restaurant are so friendly also. Dining at Ichiban was such a pleasure. Ichiban will defanitaly see me dining at their restaurant again sometime soon. I hope this review helps many others who look forward to dine at Ichiban!

Though we were seated promptly, the customer service ended there. I specifically told the waiter to make my udon BARELY spicy and we ordered several other items.
After about 20 minutes, even though they only had 2 other tables ad there were 2 servers, they finally bought out 1/2 of our food since he forgot the other half. He gave me soup which I did not order and my yaki udon was ridiculously spicy. I flagged him down, since he never came back after finally bringing us the entire meal, and asked did he make sure he told the chef mild and he nodded yes and left! Never once did he come back to offer to redo the dish nor did he check on us. We had to flag him down for water and when we wanted to leave, I actually had to get up to find him for the check. He apparently was hungry so he was sitting IN THE RESTAURANT EATING!!! He stood there with dirty dishes untouched on the table while we reviewed the bill and left the money (rude).
This was my first and LAST time going here-there are too many other Japanese places from which to choose (nobu's, miso's, drunken fish even!).
The food was okay-I had to trade/share with the other person with which I was dining-but the service left MUCH to be desired.

Ichiban was a pleasant surprise. The rice and fish are very good to excellent, the chef knowledgeble in general, staff is friendly, and parking is plentiful. Service can be slow. where Ichiban falls short in being top tier for St. Louis is in the fine details.
