so I am normally a St Louis style pizza fan! I love my provel cheese! But….Blackthorn is pretty phenomenal. This is thick crust/deep dish to the max. A small pizza will fill 4 people. It has to be seen & tried to believe me. It is excellent!
Deep dish lovers, look no more, this is the best! Nasty and dark looking place, with heavenly, cheese-heavy, and uniquely spicy sauced pizza! The first time I went I ate just one slice, the second time just 2 1/2. The most pizza possible for the price and expect leftovers! Open at 5pm every day for a reason, and always the same employees working. Be patient these big pizzas take an hour plus to cook depending on business! This is my favorite secret in all of Saint Louis!

I love going to Black Thorn!! My friends and I have been going there for a couple of years now and have never had a problem. The pizza is AMAZING, we always get the Chicago style. I can only eat two peices, even when I starve my self all day. I would recommend ordering the pizza before hand because it does take them awhile to make it. There is tv, dart boards, shuffle board, and an air hockey table. The pub is not dirty but it has that raw dirty look to it. It does get smokey up stairs but the down stairs is not bad at all.

well i thought i would check this place out since it got such high reviews. the pizza was really good but i definitely learned the definition of a dive bar. the bar itself left a lot to be desired. it was very unkept and i was doubtful about eating anything there. but the pizza was good! the only thing they have is pizza, cheese bread and some salads so dont expect variety. and they do have an air hockey table, which i thought was cool. i dont think i'll go back because of the dirtiness. no pizza is worth that lol
I got a regular crust pizza with pepperoni, onions, and green peppers and it was the best thing I've ever eaten anywhere. The green peppers were big and crispy, just how I like it. If you order right when they open at 5, a Chicago style pizza should only take about 45 minutes.

My husband and his buddy have been on a mission since Adamo's closed to find the best pizza in town. It's funny that I never get to go on their rendezvous do to schedule conflicts, however I do get to sample the left overs!
And let me tell you, no I personally have never been to the Black Thorn, yet my husband and his compadre have...and they have found their new place for their weekly craving!
My husband always saves me a slice, and WOW...even as a leftover, I have NEVER been more impressed. I'm ready to go and experience the place for myself. I have a three year old, and for those of you complaining about not being kid friendly, maybe your kids need manners ...no successful establishment would turn away income!...and if you know its a pub...and smoking is allowed...why are you taking them there in the first place? Just to complain?
Those that complain about bad service, more than likely have no idea what's involved in ""serving"" people. Especially people who can't wait more than 30 seconds for a beer, soda, or menu, or Ect and begin to YOOOHOO the wait staff. Is that how people get your attention where you work? The point of eating out is to RELAX and enjoy someone else taking care of the task of preparing and serving a meal.
So to the staff of the Black Thorn...all of this venting came of a piece of day old pizza that was AMAZING!....Can't wait to visit! Great place for our next girls nightt out!

Dave DiFani is not only responsible for bringing great pizza and fun softball to South St, Louis, he is also to blame for many marriages and several couples moving from suburban STL to the city once they discovered this jewel of a neighborhood. Dave was a true pioneer and hung in there to build this business when the neighborhood was less than desirable. Even through the carjackings, muggings, etc. of 20 years ago, the Thorn was a place to be. If this were in Chicago or New York all of you hipsters bitching about poor service and long cooking times would be raving about what an awesome place this was to meet. The Black Thorn is a place you must visit when in St. Louis and while you're there yuo might ask Dave to borrow one of his favorite books or play Battling Tops. This is an original place in a world of boring sameness. If you don't like unique, go visit some place where they wear 30 pieces of ""flair""

Yes, you have to wait for 45 minutees to an hour to get your pizza, and Yes there are no waitresses. But, it;s a fun place to hang out drink beer and eat a different kind of pizza with a style all it's own, It's not quite a Chicago style pizza but it's filled with a ton of cheese and has thick crust. It's got a little extra kick to it, and if you eat more than two pieces your going to regret it.
Tips- Call ahead and order it, play shuffle board, darts, and be a man/woman and go to the bar to order for yourself.
All and all it's not the best pizza I've ever had but the place is fun and you gotta try it.

Not ""kid friendly?"" You've got to be kidding. I can take my 11-year old grand daughter there, and have for years, with no problems from the staff. I have two nephews (16 and 13) who show up every time they know we're going. They go crazy on the air hockey table and any other game they can get on, and they can belly up to the bar to put another soda on the tab. We've been there countless times, with no problems from the staff.
Some of the beautiful people and Greeks that show up to be seen are a different story, but we go early to avoid them.
Great pizza (I don't mind the wait since they serve Guiness in Imperial pints) that's ruined me for any others, great ambience, and I can walk there. Heck, they've even let us hold a couple wakes there.

The interior is dank, dark and yellow from years of smokers. The bathroom is crummy. The games are well worn. In short, it is a hole in the wall bar. But the pizza is the best deep dish in St. Louis. Don't bring your kids, it is a bar after all. Take another reviewer's advice and call ahead if you want your pizza shortly after you arrive. The deep dish pizza takes a long time to cook. It's as simple as that.
I like the place because I can sit and talk with my friends and have a few drinks while waiting for a delicious pizza.

I've been going to Black Thorn for the past 3 or 4 years now and what you have to realize before you even consider Black Thorn is that you need to order at least an hour before you go. If you don't have that kind of time, then don't go. When you place your order, they'll tell you how long it will take so adjust your travel if you don't want to sit around and have a few beers/play some games while you wait. This is not Pizza Hut, Imo's, Papa John's, or even Elicia's. You will have to wait for awhile but is it so bad to slow down in life?
I've read a few of these reviews that talk about bad service. The golden rule plays big at this place. I?ve sat at the bar and watched people come in and wave their hands at the barkeep trying to order a drink. That?s pretty rude and in turn they don?t get service. The guy behind the bar is the server, the host, the door guy, the dollar change machine for the games, sometimes helps in the kitchen, and oh yeah ? he?s the bartender too. So if you get in a big huff about having to wait for a drink, order your next drink when your first one is halfway down. If you?re thirsty just order a pitcher as it is easier for the bartender and easier for you.
Black Thorn is a relaxed, have a few beers, play some games with your friends, and when your food shows up - it shows up - kind of place. It isn't for everyone, but my friends and I (25-30?s, professionals, city-dwellers) all enjoy the place.
This is the very best pizza from a local establishment in St. Louis. While on the outside it may not look like much, inside the beer is cold, the staff friendly, and the pizza delicious. The Chicago style with it's amazing crust, top notch toppings and peppery sauce is well worth the two hour wait you may experience, but thankfully you have cold beer to keep you company. I highly reccommend this place to anyone looking for a change from the chain places

Unless you are willing to wait 1-2 hours for mediocre pizza, avoid Black Thorn. They are also not kid friendly. I have seen them kick out responsible young customers who did not have an ID on them. The restaurant is also very smoky. Black Thorn is also small and will not be able to handle a large group. The servers have been rude the last two times I have gone. All in all, I would avoid Black Thorn if possible.

My husband and I recently went for pizza at Black Thorn after a year and a half. We had been craving it and finally went back only to be really disappointed. We used to love it and had taken many friends there over the years. We ordered our pizza with extra sauce as that was always my favorite part and not only was it not extra sauce, there was hardly enough sauce to cover the pizza, actually bare in spots. The other toppings were minimal also. Lots of thick crust and minimal toppings makes for a very dry pizza. We were really bummed and are not going to go back, unless we hear something changes, which I hope it does. We know the pizza takes a while and that is no problem, but just to get a drink at the bar, my husband had to stand in a line for over 10 minutes. Overall, not worth it.

Black Thorn used to be the best pizza in St. Louis, but I don't know what happened. Somehow its been lost. The dreamy cheese the wonderfully chewy crust. All Gone! Its a real shame. And the service, well thats another story. No one should be subjected to that kind of abuse. There also used to be a wonderful crowd of quirky folks that hung out there, now its the tragically hip and wannabes. I cannot recommend this place to anyone.
