For almost two decades, Dr. Small has served as a consultant surgeon for Ethicon Endo Surgery as a course director for advanced laparoscopic procedures and preceptor to surgeons from all over the country interested in new techniques. Dr. Small performs all varieties of laparoscopic or minimally invasive procedures including hernia, adrenal, spleen, colon and weight loss surgeries.
Primary Care
I hate doctors. I avoid them at all costs. It took 5 doctors to finally find my primary care physician, over the course of 2 years. When I had a lump in my underarm that could have been anything, I was sent for numerous tests, which ultimately landed me in Dr. Berry’s office. I immediately loved him. He was kind, caring, compassionate, and took his time with me to ensure I knew my options and what I was up againist. He knew I was scared to death and made me laugh! Surgery was scheduled for 4 days after my consult and Dr. Berry had me laughing then as well, right there in my hospital bed. I was at ease, which is how you should feel going into surgery. I then saw him for follow up, and his wonderful demeanor continued. He was the most amazingly kind and gentle doctor I have ever met and would recommend him to anyone. I was impressed not only with his expertise and surgical skill, but his bedside manner, which is equally important when a patient is anxious, nervous and not knowing what to expect.

He subsequently completed fellowships in endocrine surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in thoracic surgery at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool, England.

Dr. Schmidt is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Endocrinology. He is a member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American Society for Gastrointenstinal Endoscopy.

As a surgical oncologist his interests include gastrointestinal malignancies, breast cancer, sarcomas and cutaneous malignancies, particularly, melanoma. He also utilizes laparoscopy and intraoperative ultrasound for some GI malignancies, both for staging and selective operative management.

A native of Michigan, Dr. Roth received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from Michigan State University.Â He then relocated to Washington, D.C., where he completed his general surgery residency and a fellowship in surgical critical care at The Washington Hospital Center.

During her residency she has been involved in extensive training in all aspects of general surgery. She has developed a special expertise in minimally invasive surgery including advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques. She also brings a unique interest and expertise in the diagnosis and management of women with breast disease. She is looking forward to enhancing the surgical care and health of the community.

Surgical Associates of West Florida is a group of 7 Board-Certified surgeons who specialize in general, vascular, thoracic, colorectal, breast surgery, surgical oncology as well as weight-loss surgery and vein care.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Dr. Small served with the United States Air Force with tours at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, and Eglin Air Base, Florida. During his Air Force career, he performed and taught techniques in advanced laparoscopic surgery, especially anti-reflux or heartburn surgery and laparoscopic colon resections.
Bariatric Surgery
Dr. Small is the Medical Director of the Morton Plant Mease Bariatric Center. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Southern Medical Association, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
