Cervical Cancer: Starting at age 21 women should begin screenings. Between 21 and 29 pap smears should performed every 3 years. Between 30 and 65 women should begin to include HPV testing every five years (after 65, women who have had normal results for previous tests in the past 10 years can discontinue testing for HPV).
Colon Cancer
Cologuard® is a non-invasive colon cancer screening test for adults 50 years or older who are at average risk for colon cancer. It is important to understand that Cologuard® detects cancerous cells but does not provide any preventive measures such as polyp detection that could progress into cancer over time. Cologuard® uses advanced technology to find altered DNA from abnormal cells in the colon, which could be associated with cancer or pre-cancer and does not require any special preparation. To complete the test your provider will send you home with a Cologuard® testing kit where you collect a single stool sample and mail it to a lab using a pre-paid envelope for testing. Once completed, your provider will contact you to discuss the results.

Prevention is the best way to promote good health, and early detection saves lives. Many disorders of the digestive tract such as cancers of the colon, rectum, and esophagus are preventable and may be curable if diagnosed early. For example, removing colon polyps by colonoscopy reduces the risk of colon cancer; treatment of acid reflux (GERD) and proper evaluation by an upper endoscopy can decrease the risk of esophageal cancer. Eradicating bacteria called H. pylori can reduce the risk of gastric cancer. The yearly physical exam and follow-up conference can truly be a lifesaver.

Early detection of diabetic retinopathy is crucial to prevent blindness. If caught in early stages, laser therapy can reduce the risk of severe vison loss by 90%. Unfortunately, only about 50% of patients nationwide undergo screening for retinopathy. Much of this has to do with lack of education, affordability and not having easy access to the test from their primary provider.
