I had an appointment at Kartezs Family Eye Care, on Peters Creek Rd. In Roanoke VA.It was a bad experience from the beginning. I am training a service dog, which they refused to allow in the building. Then I was placed in a room for over a half hour to wait for Dr. Kartezs. After a routine eye exam the Dr. said he wanted to run some tests. I had already explained on check in,I did not have insurance and would be paying cash for my exam. Without explanation, the Dr Kartezs placed drops in my eyes then left the room. I was taken to an area to look at frames. I asked about the tests the Dr. wanted to run and was not given an answer. I took several pair of frames from the shelf and could not get a full price on having them fitted with my prescription. They would not give me the price with all the add-ons. I became frustrated and my wife and I decided to leave. I asked at the desk how much I owed and was told $35. I paid and intended to not ever do business with people who treat me like they are doing me a favor by doing business with me. 5 weeks later I received a bill in delinquency for $60. I called and was told by the office manager. They were doing me a favor by not charging me the whole amount at the time of the visit because they wanted to run it through my insurance, even though I told them I had no eye care coverage. They told me even though their bill said I was 30-60 days past due. That was a computer issue they had no control over. So even though I was left in a room, questions about exams went unanswered incomplete billing problems and not being able to get a straight answer on a price of glasses, the office manager told me she stood by their excellent record and the issues I experienced were my problem.I would not recommend going to this office.
3rd/last time trying this place-took 7 weeks & 3 visits to get glasses that still can't wear. (Waited 6 days to get the same pair back without any change made!). Doctors are great but service awful-long waits on phone/in store & staff that are not familiar with products. Refund not back on credit card, but main office sends check after 1st of month-no definitive date! Lost me/family/friends for good now and I will spread the word on service to all in Roanoke. Waste of my time and more importantly I've been without necessary glasses for 7 weeks and now have to go elsewhere-stay away they are not worth your efforts!
READ THIS ok since very young before the age of 4 i have had no vision in my left eye. i hate eye dr.s more than dentists. due to the fact i have been to every eye specialist practically in the state of n.y and in the Stanton and Harrisonburg and also newman and blackstock all in the area in va i have been seen here locally by eye care n surgery . i gave up on specialists .they all had traumatic things to try.:( so i been at wall mart n national optical now for a few years. i do not care about any negative review on here because this eye dr .brought tears to my eyes today i sat in his office and cried as he gave me a hug to tell me it was ok. in hundreds of specialists n thousands of eye apts. in my life . patches special eye glasses traumas. this man put a contact lens in an eye i see nothing out of but light and i can see out of it.for the first time. now this is a 2 part review because at the strongest strength in office i do not see clear out of it but i can see figures colors shape . he is ordering a different much higher strength to try to see if he can do what no dr has ever been able to do or thought to do ! and give me sight. if this works i will add a part 2 to this review. it was most weird almost scary to the point i literally cried because it was a sensation my body never saw! i am in shock that this regular eye dr thought trying what no others thought possible. do not go by negative reviews because i believe you must see for your self. i have never been so impressed! thank you dr shelton.i had lost any hope but today was the first day i ever thought mabye they have all made a mistake and should have tried the most obvious! if this dr. can do what after today i think he may be able to it is a mirical because i have struggled to function in life and work for 42 years . some things are so hard to do . others i have mastred because a lot of people are shocked when they know i have no vision in my left eye and am legally blind in my right. and i have struggled to be normal my whole life with this. none of these dr.s can say anything i have said is untrue. because it is 100% the truth i am not an employee or a fake person i live here in roanoke. excited waiting on lense . update this soon! :) carry
I wasn't aware this dr had a reputation, but I can certainly see why. The visit was just awkward. I can't say he's a bad doctor, but I never felt at ease there. Then he kept pushing Walmart Brand's Equate at me, which for a lower cost- why not? But then when I had issues, I ended up having to call the office 2x to get a simple answer which I did not like not to mention, I had someone else's name in the folder that they gave me after my visit which is major HIPAA. Would not recommend.
Stay away from Blackstock and Newman on Franklin Road...poor, poor customer service. Over $800 invested in new glasses and still cannot see well at computer or reading which is reason I made appointment to begin with. Trying to find reading glasses even though I don't feel I should have to do that. They gave me wrong strength last week. Called today because I could not find the strength they told me and she says she does not think you can get higher than a certain strength locally...wtf now you tell me this??? Leading me on a goose chase again to run out the 30 day return policy. Beyond frustrated at this point and I began to vent and Beth at Franklin Road location just hung up on me. How is that for customer service??? They don't know how to fit the lenses properly, read a prescription or give correct advise and if you complain their solution is to hang up on you. Will never use them again...should have learned my lesson the last time and it is a shame because I really like Dr. Blackstock but the staff is terrible and incompetent.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update: Joe called me personally, apologized and offered a resolution. This man is a class act and I hope he can impart that to his staff. He is a great gentleman and deserves to have a staff that represents him well.
There is a reason this guy keeps changing his office location - trying to stay one step ahead of his bad reputation. Ask at Sears Optical about him (one of his former offices is right there) - buyer beware!
