Kobe Japanese Steak and Sushi is a great restaurant. It's located in the Shockoe Bottom area, where the night-life is booming. The Kobe restaurant is split into upper and lower levels -- upper level serve sushi and traditional japanese cuisine along with a bar, whereas lower level serve hibachi cuisine. Their sushi is prepared by a skilled Japanese Sushi chef and the quality and detail of their sushi entrees are top-etched. The traditional menu just has been revamped and it is simply amazing. If you have yet to try Japanese fusion cuisine, Kobe is the place to go. I recommend the Filet Minion with Truffle sauce. The downstairs offer a wide menu where the food is cooked and served on a hibachi grill. I must admit the hibachi is not the BEST I have had ( I am a hibachi chef ), customers won't regret anything. The hibachi chefs at Kobe are one of the finest in the Richmond area and their entertainment will keep you amused throughout the night.
The prices are a bit higer than usual restaurants (Ex. Avg. course: including sushi appetizer, a Small glass of a Ozeki sake, and Hibachi Chicken -- $35.) Keep in mind that the hibachi dinner comes with a soup, salad, and 2 shrimp appetizers and the amount of food you get is very hard to finish.
There is a bar upstairs which offer a wide array of mixed drinks, authentic sake, wine, and other spirits.
Honestly, there are many places to visit when you go to downtown (restaurants), and most of them are really impressive and great. However, Kobe always seem to have a fresh food and has satisfied all my needs every time I visited.
I give 5 stars for Kobe because of their quality of food and for satisfying my needs
It is really true about people complaining with waitresses however I found it very reasonable when I got to know that kobe is one of the restaurants that support college students by hiring them. And foods are delicious! And it is well worth waiting. Hibachi usually take long time and plus with performance = more time. I don't know why people don't eat up-stair if don't want to wait for hibachi.. because they do hibachi upstair too. I want to give kobe 5 stars
We have tried numerous Japanese restaurants in the area looking for authentic Japanese food (We are from NY) Kobe is the closest to authentic Japanese food that we have found in the Richmond area. Their Terriyaki, Hibachi, and tempura are excellent. Haven't had the sushi but I'm sure it is delicious as well. We live in Short Pump and drive down to the bottom just for the food.
Came to Kobe to meet a friend on a quiet Tuesday night. There are two levels; the upper- with regular tables and a sushi bar, and the lower- with hibachi tables. The ceiling was painted a galaxy blue, and plenty of ambient lighting. We ordered a sushi boat, which was plenty for two people. We struggled to finish it all. But it was all so yummy, we had to! They have a nice selection of alcohol. I would definitely want to try their hibachi out next time. Can't wait to go back!
I've been there twice on work dinners and both times we were very happy. We all got hibachi and ordered some rolls and/or sushi to share. I'm not sure about all the negative reviews but all the sushi we had was delicious. I ordered the shockoe roll both times because I loved it so much, just be careful. It's one of the fried rolls with cream cheese in the middle and it's molten hot when it first comes to the table. Def let that one sit for a while. I know all the sushi buffs don't believe in these kind of rolls but we ordered straight sushi as well and really enjoyed it. The hibachi was scrumptious as well, I didn't hear any complaints and I think we got just about 1 of everything on the menu.
So far, this has been the best sushi I've found in Richmond so I'll be back for sure.

So, I took my 13 yrs daughter and my 9 yrs son and boyfriend to Kobe for a early Mother's Day diner.
When we get to the hostesses, they how many, I told them four, that the last person has not arrived yet and would be here shortly.
I requested to be seated downstairs, where all the action is.
They said they couldnt seat us until our entire party was here. I asked then could we have a seat at a table while we wait, and she told me, and I quote, ""you can have a seat at the bar"". I looked at her like she had lost her fricken mind.
And so, my kids and I waited in front of the door for 15 minutes, while the two hostesses talked about how difficult I was being for not sitting at the bar with my children.
Maybe the Kobe manager should know what type of employees he's got upstairs, cause the one's downstairs are wonderful!

I frequent a few sushi restaurants, and Kobe has happened to be one of them. Going there, the atmosphere was great and I was expecting food of the same level. However, after ordering the food, it was not that great. Maybe being used to DC, they do a little different down here. If so, I still prefer Hana Zushi which is across the street, or another restaurant in the fan.
