Veneers
The ads you are seeing may be for veneers. They cover crooked teeth and mask the problem, but do not address the structure in the mouth or how the upper and lower teeth meet. Veneers are not permanent. Many require removal of significant amounts of tooth enamel.
Crowns
The upper teeth stick out well past the lower teeth. Also notice the lower silver tooth. This is a retained baby tooth that has a stainless steel crown placed on it.

Retainer in place. Once the patient has finished growing (around the age of 18 for girls and 21 for boys) a permanent bridge or implant will be used to replace the missing tooth.

Jaw Surgery
Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Griffies remains active in his field and holds professional memberships with the ADA, AAO, Cleft Lip and Palate Association, North Carolina Dental Society, Southern Association of Orthodontists, and the Sandhills Dental Study Club. He continues to lecture extensively to the Army Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery programs both at Ft Bragg, Bethesda and Tripler Hawaii. In addition, Dr. Griffies is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and is a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Griffies is dedicated to maintaining a reputation of excellence in the field of orthodontics.

At JMG Orthodontics, we are family practice and very proud of that fact. Everyone that works with us was a patient, a patient’s parent or a friend of the family. For example, Dr. Griffies’ wife, Janice, oversees the administration of both offices. Debbie worked with Dr. Griffies while he was active duty at Ft. Bragg and she followed him into private practice. Then there is Bill, our lab tech. Dr. Griffies treated all three of his sons, then he came to work for us, followed by his son, and former patient, Alex, followed then by his wife, Deb both have all been part of the team. Madaline’s son, Gunnar was a patient before she joined us. Kylle was a patient before he came aboard. Of course, Kylle’s mom, Lisa, and father Al work with us as well. Megan joined the team after her daughter Lilea was a patient. And most recently Elisabeth joined the team. We bring on team members that have great personalities and great hearts. Of course, our team is highly trained and efficient, but really, best of all is that they are a blast. Invisalign Orthodontics
Invisalign is a system of clear aligners which can be used to straighten teeth in some cases however many malocclusions are better treated with “regular braces”. Be sure to ask Dr. Griffies about the alternative to Invisalign which may be “six-month-braces.”
Braces
The best time to start orthodontic treatment is when all of the permanent teeth have erupted. This is generally between the ages of 11 and 14 years. Many times your child will express concerns about gaps or overcrowding and crooked teeth. All of these can be taken care of with braces during this age range particularly when your child is excited about braces.

General Dentistry
Dame, Dr. Griffies went on to earn his professional education from Baylor College of Dentistry. He received his certificate in orthodontics from the U.S. Army Orthodontic Training Program at Fort Meade and practiced dentistry and orthodontics in the Army for 22 years. In addition he served as the orthodontic instructor for three Army Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training programs and the Fort Bragg General Dentistry training program. In July 2005, Dr. Griffies retired as the Orthodontic Consultant to the Army Surgeon General and Deputy Commander of the Ft. Bragg Dental Activity.
