Dental Care
Dental care for horses differs significantly from that of humans or even cats and dogs. Due to their vegetarian diet and manner of eating, a horse’s teeth work more like a gristmill, constantly grinding and mashing down their food. The horse’s teeth are therefore designed to keep emerging an adaptation to the manner in which they eat.
Vaccination
There are many vaccinations for horses, some of which are considered essential for all horses (core), while others are recommended depending on the individual horse and his or her lifestyle (non-core). The American Association of Equine Practitioners recommends that all horses receive vaccinations against rabies, tetanus, West Nile Virus, eastern/western equine encephalitis, influenza, and rhinopneumonitis.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Beau Green holds a B.S. in cellular, molecular and developmental biology from the University of Washington and graduated from WSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Following veterinary school, Beau completed a year-long medicine and surgery internship at Bend Equine Medical Center. His veterinary interests include emergency care, dentistry, ophthalmology, and endocrine/metabolic disease.
Nutritional Counseling
Our vets are happy to discuss your horses nutritional needs and to help adjust the diet in order to address weight loss, weight gain, endocrine disease or dental inefficiency. We are also able to demystify the decision making involved in sorting through the many choices regarding feed supplements and additives. We can also help with feed/hay analysis to determine whether your hay is appropriate for your horses use, age, and dentition.
Comprehensive Examination
Body Fat Assessment – Body Condition Score, Cresty Neck Score, Body Weight (ideally on the scale at the clinic), and general physical exam can be used to assess your horse.

Please bring any medical history you have for your pets when you come to our clinic. Let us know how and what your pet has been eating, deworming history and feed analysis results along with any other vaccine history, or relevant historical information.
Pain Management
Following graduation Dr. Smith accepted a surgical and medical internship at Oregon’s Willamette Valley Equine Hospital where she gained additional experience in anesthesia, pain control, surgery, hospitalization of critically ill patients, neurologic cases, emergency and trauma medicine, neonatal foal care, imaging, and other areas of modern equine veterinary practice. She has been with Sound Equine since 2010.

Dr. Fahy earned BS degrees in Biology and Animal Science from the University of Findlay in Findlay, OH. They then attended The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, with an equine emphasis, followed by a one year equine internship in field service and internal medicine. After their internship, Dr. Fahy completed a 3 year residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, working with a variety of farm animals in addition to horses. Their interests and areas of expertise include emergency and critical care, neonatal medicine, respiratory disease, neurology, dentistry, and managing hospitalized patients.

Every animal comes into contact with potentially dangerous viruses and bacterial infections in the course of daily life, and horses are no different. This makes vaccinations a critical component of a comprehensive horse wellness plan. Horse vaccines provide protection against several dangerous and even potentially deadly diseases by stimulating a horse’s immune system.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
PRP therapy offers a promising solution to accelerate healing of tendon injuries and osteoarthritis naturally, without subjecting the patient to significant risk. PRP is an emerging treatment in a new health sector known as “Orthobiologics.” The philosophy is to merge cutting edge technology with the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Platelets were initially known to be responsible for blood clotting. In the last 20 years we have learned that when activated in the body, platelets release healing proteins called growth factors. There are many growth factors with varying responsibilities, however cumulatively they accelerate tissue and wound healing. When injected into inflamed or injured tissue, we are able to deliver a powerful cocktail of growth factors that can dramatically enhance tissue recovery. This procedure can be done on an outpatient basis at the clinic.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Hoof Assessment – Lameness exam, hoof testers, visual exam of the hoof for divergent growth rings, and radiographs of the feet can be used to asses current/ongoing and historical laminitis in your horse.
Thyroid Disease Treatment
Thyro-L (Levothyroxine) – While horses with EMS do not have hypothyroidism, short term use of a daily thyroid supplement (<6 months) can be helpful to jumpstart metabolism, encourage weight loss, and improve insulin sensitivity. This medication CANNOT be suddenly discontinued.
Heart Disease Treatment
We treat many soft tissue and orthopedic cases, from routine castrations to neurectomies, hernias and cryptorchids. Cases are monitored with EKG, blood pressure, pulse-oximetry and blood gases as necessary. We also offer ovariectomy and other reproductive surgeries, as well as dental and sinus surgery. We provide management to all surgery cases.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Green, are the toxic parts of the tree. The tannic acid in the acorns affects the intestinal lining and can cause portions of the lining to slough off. Symptoms of toxicity include poor appetite, weight loss, constipation followed by diarrhea, kidney failure and edema. In severe cases oak poisoning can lead to death. Our office has had several cases of poisoning by acorns with kidney failures.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
If your horse seems to drop a lot of food while eating, the molars may not be meeting up properly, allowing food to escape. If your horse chokes or gags on food, this can also be a sign that the teeth are not grinding the food down enough and that there is a problem that requires evaluation. A combination of bad breath and difficulty eating can signal that your horse may be suffering from horse periodontal disease.

Laboratory Services
The breeding package does not include any hormones or medications necessary to manipulate the heat cycle, additional laboratory diagnostics, or additional in-depth examinations or procedures. After the 14 day post ovulation pregnancy check, subsequent ultrasounds to confirm development of the fetus are not included in the breeding package.
X-Ray
Digital radiography, or digital X-ray, is a wonderful new development in equine veterinary practice. Our portable digital imaging system provides immediate high-resolution images that can be enhanced to reveal problems that might not be seen using traditional X-ray technology.
