Provided by Citysearch -All I wanted was a package of goat's milk caramels for my boyfriend for Valentine's day. (he collects goats) After some research online, I quickly learned goat's milk caramels are hard to find! But I found them at the cheapest price from SurLa Table so I eagerly placed my order. Within a day or so, I got the standard 'your item is ready to be shipped, we will send the tracking info soon.' email. A week and a half later, I still hadn't received any additional shipping notices or tracking info. So I sent an inquiry through their customer service center asking for an update on my order, that it was a gift for Valentine's day. The response was that the caramels were no longer available in the warehouse but there might still be some in the stores and if I really wanted, I could talk to customer service and see if they could ship it from one that had them in stock. :( What really angers me was that 2 weeks were wasted in my search for an alternate source for these caramels. With Valentine's day a week away - I can't afford speedy shipping to have them shipped in from another state. The least they could have done was send an email telling me they were not available or maybe update their online catalog so that people aren't ordering things they don't have! Is that too much to ask for? For SurLa Table, it is.

Provided by Citysearch -My daughter chose to register at Sur la Table in order to support a more local, regional business. We went into the store, excited to add some items to those she had chosen online. She lives in a small town and rarely gets here to shop. Our experience was awful. The zapper they give you to mark items malfunctioned, and we were given virtually no help. We were ignored and made to feel like we were a nuisance. The only person who made any effort whatsoever was the manager, and she was largely unavailable and overwhelmed.
Brides, do not register at Sur la Table!!

Provided by Citysearch -Very nice, well-informed staff, huge product selection, but also huge mark-up on products. Also, Sur La Table could move in a more environmentally-friendly direction. In Good Taste, a smaller kitchen store down the street has found the funds to provide biodegradable bags. Still... thanks for having several Portland locations and having all locations well-stocked. I can always find what I need at Sur La Table, if I can't first find it somewhere else.

Provided by Citysearch -i knew shopping at Sur la Table was a mistake, yet i foolishly chose convenience over quality. wanted to buy truffle salt as a gift -- i regularly use black truffle salt and asked the gruff woman behind the counter if there was much of a difference between black or white, as i was thinking of buying white this time (got sucked in by the nice packaging). she was no help at all (and even provided wrong information), frankly didn't want to be bothered with me. (i guess if i wanted to actually sample the salt i should've gone to The Meadow on N. Mississippi.) no big deal, i'm used to this kind of service from this place, as i work nearby and often spend my lunch breaks shopping. anyway, i choose the white truffle salt and immediately go drop off the gift. to my horror, the recipient opened the salt to find it congealed and rotten-smelling -- it had gone bad. on closer examination i realize the expiration date displayed on the jar shows it had expired. i'm horrified but too embarrassed to let the recipient know anything was wrong, they thought it was normal. i quietly said my goodbyes, totally mortified and hoped they were none-the-wiser. i call Sur la Table just to give them a heads-up they have expired merch on the shelves, not to complain or ask for my money back, JUST to let them know -- WOW. i couldn't have been treated more rudely. screw this place and their crappy, insulting attitude.
