Slim's to stay slim

I tried to eat breakfast at Slims this morning; this is the most appropriately named restaurant I have ever been to, if your desire is to stay slim go to Slims. First, the little slacker girl who was the bartender / waitress looked as if she had slept in her car and not bathed prior to starting her shift. Her hair looked like a dogs chew toy and her pants were filthy. Her breathy, vacuous, wind in the head manor of speech should have been all I needed to pack up and leave, but I foolishly stayed. Rather than rant about our hung over and dirty server I will give you the bullet points. We placed our order and received our coffee promptly. The coffee was so weak that it looked like bad tea, after a 20 minute wait for Wind in the Head to come back and refill me I went inside with my empty cup and walked toward the coffee station. Dirty girl saw me and ran over to the coffee and started to refill my cup. The coffee in the carafe was so weak I could see through it. I said “wow your coffee looks like it needs more coffee in it”…. blank stare, pause, open mouth, pause “yeah there was something wrong with that batch….” Pause, stare (blankly), close mouth. While I was inside I noticed that griddle was clean ie: no food cooking on it WTF! My order had been in for 25 min and no one had even started cooking it! This is breakfast you guys eggs, bacon, toast each has a cooking time of less than 10 minutes, let’s go! I should point out that when I arrived they had one other table and they were already eating, they were not busy, slammed, or rushed my order should have been done or at least cooking buy this point. This was my second queue to leave, just run and never look back, but no I wanted to support my local business and eat where I live. I sat back down outside and waited another 10 min for better coffee, I finally gave up and walked to Starbucks and grabbed some there. After 45 minutes of waiting I walked inside again and there were both of my plates of food sitting on the bar next to dirty dishes(quick tip: the food pass and buss station should not be the same thing) Wind in the Head was pouring a beer so I grabbed my food and took it outside. My wife’s biscuits and gravy tasted like it had incense in it and my sausage patty looked and tasted like it had been boiled in water. Maybe that is why the grill was so clean. We each took a bite and realized this food was not fit to eat and we decided to leave. I took the plates back inside to the food pass/buss station and dropped them off. Again the grill was clean and there were 6 orders hanging waiting to be prepared, it seems their cook can only do one order at a time and needs a clean griddle and 10 min to start the next order. The best part is when I told the bartender that the food was bad there was no apology or effort to make things right when I said I did not want to pay for it she just said “don’t come back “ Don’t worry I wont, ever.

FYI I have never written a letter like this and I am not one of those a-hole restaurant patrons that think the price of the meal includes the right to be rude to the staff. I just wanted some eggs and toast in a timely manor. As I read the other reviews of this place maybe you should go there and get your drink on but if you are hungry I’d eat someplace else.

Go, sit, listen, drink a porter or three

Mmmm, they have Southern Oregon Brewery porter on tap and it makes me happy(please don't tell my Irish family that Guinness has become my 2nd favorite). In addition, the staff are all very friendly and attentive, the menu is a lot more than what I would expect from a bar and the live music(which happens most nights) is pretty good to awesome. I really, really enjoyed the blues played by the Suburban Slim Band last Sunday night. It was the only time in Portland that I've ever been reminded of the basement blues sessions that I would stumble across late at night back in college in New York. It was a real treat.

Oh, and they have this salad that is incredible, wilted romaine with this amazing garlic dressing, I've never been much for ""wilted"" greens or for any dressing even remotely creamy, but this was recommended to me by the owner and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, really, this salad rocks! I also have had this marinated beef dish that is super yummy, the beef was marinated in espresso and chianti and was so good I couldn't believe it.

Go, sit, listen, drink a porter or three, eat the salad, talk to the guys at the bar(they'll surprise you with their amazing stories), enjoy being somewhere that is genuine, filled with a plethora of different kinds of people and where everyone fits in just fine.

First Sunday Blues

This is the place to be on the first Sunday of the month. There is great live blues. And, any other night is good too. The food is excellent and the prices are good. The bar has a large selection of beverages and even a few new to me. The staff and owners are awesome.

Amazing new menu, Incredible value, Friendly staff, A little smokey

We just moved to St. John's and came across Slim's as we were looking for our new local downtown hang out. The first appearance was a little underwhelming, but it was packed with people that looked like they were having a good time, so we went in. To our surprise, we had one of the best meals that North Portland has to offer. I don't remember the name, but I had the an Asian steak appetizer served over rice and my wife had the seared chicken caesar--both were unbelievably good! The owner was the one who dropped off our food and he was very attentive, friendly, and welcoming. On top of that, our bartender was great. Despite being swamped behind the bar she was still able to offer tableside service all night, which completely exceeded our expectations. The only downside for us was that it is a smoking establishment (we're both non-smokers). Overall, great first impression and we'll definitely be back.
