We offer individual treatments to focus on you and your individual needs in a one-on-one setting with the practitioner.

Relational Acupuncture® gives people a powerful new channel for reaching their life goals, be it pursuing a new career path, finding an ideal partner, freeing buried creativity or healing from a loss.

Relational Acupuncture® helps people uncover their desires and achieve their goals in a warm, collective setting where group intentions and acupuncture treatments empower each other. While group energy strengthens the treatments, the treatments strengthen the group energy, elevating traditional acupuncture to a new, rapid and often awe-inspiring level of effectiveness.
In practical terms, Relational Acupuncture® brings together a handful of individuals once a week, for either six or eleven weeks.
Each participant sets a specific intention for the series, shares their progress over the weeks and witnesses his or her intention become reality. For many, it is truly a life-changing experience.
Our Foundational series brings up to five patients together for six shared sessions, providing each with an introduction to our Relational Acupuncture® process.
Once a patient has attended a Foundational series, he or she is eligible to attend one of our advanced eleven weeks series, wherein learning around intention and manifestation is deepened.
Our experience has taught us that by focusing the positive intentional thoughts and statements of the group on a given patient's need
the healing power of traditional acupuncture is magnified exponentially.

Chinese Herbs Portland

Chinese herbs have been used for many centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
These ancient medical therapy formulations were passed on by word of mouth for generations, and are comprised of more than 5,700 substances. The plants, animals, and minerals that are used in Chinese herbal therapy are delivered via teas, granules, patents, and tinctures; and, they make a substantial difference for many of our Portland patients.
Our practitioners who make use of Chinese herbs are familiar with most of the 1,800 herbs in the Chinese pharmacopeia.
All of these herbs are classified according to their energetic qualities, functions and the different organs, meridians and disharmonies for which they address. Individual herbs are combined in order to enhance their actions and affects upon the body. When combined, a unique, synergistic formula is created. This combination increases the benefits of a particular formula, and minimizes any harmful side effects.
In order to create the most effective formula, Chinese herbs are used in different quantities and for different purposes.
This allows the practitioner to create a formula aimed at addressing the individual needs.

Specific Hierarchy of Chinese Herbs

Chief herb
This herb has the greatest affect upon the principle problem and is the most important ingredient. It is the energetic and therapeutic focus of the entire formula.
Deputy herb
These herbs support the Chief herb in the treatment of the principal problem. Deputy herbs usually address the secondary signs and symptoms.
Assistant herb
The role of the Assistant herb is to support and reinforce the affects of the other herbs. They also help moderate or eliminate any harsh properties of herbs within the formula.
Envoy herb
Envoy herbs harmonize, guide, and focus the action of the entire formula on certain meridians of the body.

Chinese herbs can be dispensed in three ways

The first method is completely raw.
The herbs remain unprocessed for this dispensing method.
The second method that we deliver Chinese herbs is in granular form.
Granules of processed herbs are mixed to create a highly effective formula designed to treat a complexity of symptoms that is individualized specifically for a patient.
The third and final method of dispensing is with pre-packaged formulas, each of which have been crafted to treat particular symptoms.

Treating Kids with Acupuncture

In today's rapidly changing world, kids are facing more stress than ever before.
When I first opened RiverWest more than a decade ago, I treated children mostly for allergies.
But today, I'm caring for more and more kids diagnosed with ADHD, ADD, Asperger's, and Autism-conditions whose labels may follow them for the remainder of their lives, oftentimes, unfortunately, defining who they are in a less than positive way.
The stress and anxiety that kids deal with today has significantly increased.
I recall that at one time it seemed a child's biggest concerns were: Will I be picked first or second for the baseball team? What time is lunch? And, who will be my best friend today at recess?
Today's kids grapple with heavier questions
such as: Where will I fit in? Who am I? What are the expectations of my teachers, my friends, and my parents? What other activities will I participate in and how do I carve out time for those? How can I have enough time and space for all that demands my attention?
Such burdened questioning-and the anxieties that accompany them-has brought many kids to RiverWest Acupuncture for relief.
The good news is our treatments are highly effective for kids with a variety of concerns. Some of the more common manifestations of their stress that we want to help them with are: Sleep disturbances falling asleep or waking up; Anxiety issues worry, fear, nervousness; Mental acuity ability to focus
I use a three-prong approach.
First, I use a gentle technique that does not involve needles as a way to restore balance and free flowing qi, which supports the child to grow and thrive naturally. Because they are young, kids have the advantage of not having a long history, and so their bodies adapt and heal quicker than adults. In addition, I will teach them techniques that they can use anywhere to help relax, focus, and calm themselves in minutes. Last, I give them an herbal tincture they take orally that effectively and gently calms them. I have had great success treating children with this protocol and look forward to serving your child.
The activator tool that I use to treat children that are afraid or too young for needles.
It is simply pressed gently against the appropriate points and is extremely effective.

Portland Veteran Give Back Program

Once a quarter we open up our clinic for the entire day for any veteran or family member to come in and receive free individual acupuncture treatment.
Within that day, we will also offer one Community Acupuncture group treatment as a way to take additional patients when we run out of individual slots.
In addition, we also work in conjunction with a Portland non-profit called The Returning Veterans Project.
In that program each of our practitioners open up his or her schedule for one veteran patient, whom he or she will treat pro-bono for life.
So far, we have loved working with this group, as they are so appreciative of whatever we do for them-and that has touched us deeply.
