going downhill fast, steer clear

I have frequented Paddy's a lot over the past 8 years while working downtown Portland.

They're known for their Lemon Drops, which I'll say are quite good. They run $8 a piece and you get a pint glass refill on the side - so it's like 2 drinks in one.

That has stayed consistent and is the ONLY reason I return to Paddy's.

They have had ownership changes, they've changed happy hour (timeframe) and they've changed their menu.

Happy hour has always been only a discount on food prices. You used to be able to go at 3pm, get 1-2 items for $5-6 total. Chicken fingers were around $4 and came with fries. It was basically a meal if you didn't share.

Now it doesn't start til 4pm, the chicken fingers are $6, they're tiny, there's only a few of them (3-4) and they don't come with fries. For $6, I felt quite ripped off.

Meanwhile, nothing has changed as far as the service - it SUCKS! You'll get charged wrong, you won't get the items you requested, and then act like they cannot hear you as they buzz by and you're saying ""excuse me..."" Quite frustrating.

Don't go to Paddy's for any reason other than the lemon drop.

don't go there for happy hour

We were there twice yesterday - convenience sakes - and the first time we had irish coffees. the coffee was lukewarm at best; we should have returned them but we were in a hurry. Then we went back and had happy hour food. the calamari was so salty that we had salf aftereffects for at least 2 hours after we left. HORRIBLE! And our sliders were dry. We won't go back there for happy hour.

Brunch is SO good!

We had old friends visiting in town this weekend, and found we were at Paddy's every day. It is such a good spot to meet when people are coming in from all 4 corners of Portland.

Brunch at Paddy's was AMAZING and I cannot stress enough how great the biscuits and gravy were!

We ended up back there the following evening and the Happy Hour menu was so good I had to be rolled out the door cos I couldn't stop eating and eating and eating.

I would definitely recommend Brunch, and then also the Shepard's Pie. It was so yummy!

Terrible Lunch Service

Long wait to order. Even longer wait to receive our food. Several orders were incorrect, server brought out the wrong food, had to ask for things multiple times, including the tab! Small lunch menu and the food was mediocre. Definitely will not be going there again.

One of Portland's finest bars

I've been to Paddy's many times and I always have a great experience. The staff is very personable and the drink options are endless. I am a big fan of trying out different and new whiskey when I hang out here. The food is always excellent and their happy hour specials are great. Also, in my opinion Paddy's is the best destination for St. Patrick's Day.

Only one good bartender

I've been to Paddy's 3 times now. The first time, the experience was awesome. The bartender there took good care of us and made us the best drinks EVER (called the Verve). So we went back. The server we got didn't pay any attention to us and we waited 30 minutes before we got our first round of drinks. We ordered Verves, and she brought the wrong drinks. We then waited another 20 minutes for the right drinks, and they were made awfully. After almost an hour of waiting and then being brought the worst drink ever, we were just going to leave. We thought it was a one time thing, so we went to Paddy's a few weeks later. We sat outside, and it was really hot. The server checked our ID's. My girlfriend had a temporary ID from the state of Oregon, and the server asked her for a second form of ID. She didn't ask us if we wanted to order drinks. Another server came out and checked our ID's again. She asked my girlfriend if her ID had come in the mail yet, and my girlfriend was like, ""If my ID came in the mail, I would have brought that one."" The server said, ""Well, you know it's only good for 30 days, right? It expires on the 22nd."" It was the 15th. After giving her a hard time about the ID (which was issued by the state, and that's what we get, so bars should get with the program), the server finally asked us if we wanted to order drinks. We did, and my girlfriend ordered a water as well. The drinks were fine, but no water was brought. Then someone else at our table ordered water and the server brought out water for everyone except my girlfriend. After waiting about 15 minutes, I just went up to the bar and got her a water. I don't know how/if these servers get tips.

Paddy's new burger is out of this world.....

Last Friday I was in Paddy's having a drink and burger. The burgers at Paddys have always been good, but on this day it was the best I ever had..... Chef Doug came out and spoke with me about his new recipe. Red onion, fresh garlic and Apple cider bear. The new plates at Paddy's bring this joint into the new era. I will be back again and again for the great food and cocktails.

Paddy's Portland. Excellent

So, I stumble into this little bar at the base of downtown Portland. It's a clean setting. First thing I see are the long bank of ample booths. I'm a big guy, so I appreciate that. Next thing I see is one of the biggest selections of booze I have ever seen west of Columbus Circle. It's unbelivable. I think they have every liquor produced in the world. It'll make your head spin. ""If we haven't got it, then you probably don't want it,"" said the laconic bar tender, Chris.

I'm thinking if the booze selection is this great then the food has to be lame. Wrong. The food is terrific. Today I ordered the carrot soup. It's the du jour. And, it's excellent. Heavy cream. Lots of carrots and I can actually taste the sweetness of the carrots. I asked for a second cup. I want to marry the chef.

I also was hankering for a hamburger. The waitress mentions the off the menu ""grinder."" This is a Kobe beef burger grilled to perfection with cheddar cheese and sweet grilled onions. It's topped with delicious soft french bread that soaks up the juice better than any limp-wristed brioche bun ever could. It was so good I have a feeling I am going to have dreams about it tonight.

Paddy's chirpy owner, Gregg Schillinger, stopped by the table to see how I was making out. I told him of my discovery with the grinder and expressed how it might be the best burger I ever ate. He thanked me and then told me a story of how he came up with the idea while working in a bar in his native, Buffalo, New York. If the burgers are this good in Buffalo, then I might be able to endure the weather there. I'd prefer to come back to Paddy's though.

Best Patio and Happy Hour

While I hardly felt by going there due to the obviously outdated picture from Citysearch I was pleasantly suprised to see a fresh and clean exterior matched by a warm and friendly interior.
The seating on the Yamhill St. side has to be one of the best spots for watching downtown portlanders wander by around. Just the right amount of sun and space to be too comfortable. The cocktails are great while the food was so much better than I ever would of expected. The people are the friendliest in town with every one of them attractive but not full of themselves.
I will definately be bringing in folks to Paddy's very soon.

Saturday night happy hour.

My fiance and I did not feel like going to a club last night (Sat) so we checked out Paddys. First off its located on the max line which is awesome. After 10pm they have a late night happy hour, and the food was better than expected. We had hot wings, potato skins, and nachos along with two beers for less than $20. We will be back often as the seasons change, and dressing up to go out becomes obsolete in the winter, and casual clothes in a sweet bar becomes much more appealing.
