If you want the best Indian food in this area, come here and you'll find it. It's that simple. I have eaten here dozens of times and it is always superb. Don't be put off by the strip mall location. Inside the restaurant is beautiful, warm in winter-cool in summer, and always very comfortable with big booths and gorgeous decor. It's also shining clean.
But the food, oh, the food! All the sauces taste fresh and homemade. The vegetables are perfectly cooked. The naan is delicious and sets a new standard. The chutneys have perfect balance. The rice is fluffy and aromatic. I don't usually eat meat but must make an exception for the tender luscious chicken. Servings are ample. If you don't get the mixed plate of appetizers you are a fool as this is enough food for lunch for two people next day, after you've eaten all you can at the table.
Service is as good as in a five star restaurant: unobtrusive but always ready to refill glasses, take new orders etc. And the owner is a very nice, polite and welcoming man. If I lived near this restaurant I fear I wouldn't be able to resist eating here very single day.

This restaurant's lunch buffets quality fails to match the ratings presented in various reviews. I couldn't rate dinner quality but, after lunch's I won't be returning.
I've been to Swaggart's and India House and both are much better.
Though after having been to Asia I know that both are only comparable to the hole in the wall dives down Aias's dark dank ... hold your nose ... watch your step back alleys that most of America's non-minoritys wouldn't walk down.

The food here is excellent. When we moved to Portland 5 years ago from Seattle we were sad to find only a handful of Indian restaurants in town. But this one is all we need! The number is programmed into my cell phone because we pick up to take home a few times a month.
Food is fresh, high quality and YUMMY. Our favorites are Chicken Tiki Masala and Shahi Paneer. The chicken is white meat, no fat or grissle. The Shahi Paneer sauce has a nutty flavor that is like candy to me! Also love the Mattar Paneer.
The owners are very kind & gracious and the restaurant itself always clean. Good wine choices. LOVE THIS PLACE - the best in Portland

When I first went to Bombay Cricket Club, I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Nice spicy food, fabulous naan, love the rice. Then I went to New Delhi...and that was end of my love of BCC.
New Dehli serves handmade food from scratch--no joke here--the head chef is the owner's wife and all the recipes come from his mother! If you want it spicier, add some peppers--they'll be happy to bring them to you. All of the staff is very friendly and makes you feel very much at home. My mom and I eat their buffet all the time and my friends and I have gone there several times for dinner. The food is always consistent and DELICIOUS!!!
The only real downside: I wish they had the mixed drinks that the other, aforementioned Indian restaurant on Hawthorne has. New Delhi has only a few kinds of beer and wine. :-(

I love, love, love this place! I honestly don't know what people see in the Bombay Cricket Club.... except maybe their cocktails. If you're serious about Indian food, this is the place to go. I just learned that New Delhi is a family owned and operated, and they have a lot to be proud of.
The quality of the chicken and lamb in all dishes is exceptional... all white meat chicken.... no fatty pieces like I found at the BCC, and the flavor is consistent every time I eat here. My favorite is the chicken Tikka Masala, as it is so delicious I have eaten it for breakfast!! This place is up there with, if not better than, my favorite places I've eaten at in London... which is known for its Indian food. The last time I was at New Delhi, I had a desert that was a deliciously sugar-soaked spongecake thing that was to die for. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Portland! For so many reasons!!

I've tried most of the Indian places in town, and this one is my favorite by far. I've been going there a few times a month for the past four years. The food is fresh and delicious. It's very clean and the buffet is kept well stocked (except the lamb dish is usually without any lamb in it; it's so good that people like me skim out the lamb and leave the sauce and potatoes behind). The service is efficient. Parking can be a pain. The spices are mild, which I like. There are condiments to spice it up if you want.

I've read some less than stellar reviews and I'm here to let you know:
Lunch is buffet. Quantity over quality. The lunch entrees are served mild so everyone can eat it. You like it spicy? Quit being such a cheapskate and go for dinner. For $1-3 more, you can get something you really like. And you still get a huge portion! I always have leftovers for lunch the next day even with just one entree ordered! Its a great family business that you can feel good about supporting, the owner is very attentive, the waitress is cute and witty. They've got great choices for everyone and even in this terrible economy, the loyal regular customers keep coming back for more. It looks like a dive, but its surprisingly nice inside without spending all the profits on decor. The food is definitely quality and good value.
This place can be hard to find. They are next to the Chevron in a funky strip mall called Barbur Square. They don't advertise, so if you've been there, its either a lucky accident or word of mouth. Its a great casual date spot but you can feel okay about bringing your family too. They've got a good beer and wine selection (I stick to the Royal Challenge from India) and I'm always stuffed, so I order my dessert to go.
Me and my sweetheart recommend sharing the Chicken Makhani and the Navratan Korma with a side of Garlic Naan. The tandoori dishes are great too. Whatever you choose, I've tried almost the whole menu and every dish has been a winner. They spice everything to your taste, so don't be afraid to try something new. They take big parties if you call ahead, but its a small place, so don't show up without a phone call first if you're more than 4 people. They also do carry out, which is nice when you're on the run.

My best friend is Indian and I love her mother's cooking. This is the best I have found in Portland. The staff is always friendly and the food is always fresh. We get take-out about once a week from New Delhi. I highly recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala.

This restaurant is mediocre at best, I'm not sure if nobody posting has ever tasted good Indian food or more likely the restaurant management is ""stuffing the ballot box"" - I really can't imagine otherwise how there could be 23 positive reviews with 4 or 5 stars prior to me. I tried the lunch buffet for $8.95 and even at this price point I have gotten good Indian buffets elsewhere but this really reminded me of what fast food Indian would probably taste like. The lamb vindaloo honestly tasted like a marginal American beef stew and the curry-based dishes were slightly better but still mostly tasteless and uninspired at best. I am absolutely fine with the lack of heat in most/all dishes but PLEASE give me some flavor. Even the Naan was only marginal - I consider Naan to be like a good pizza crust, it should be very good on its own and even better when paired with other flavors. Neither delivers here.
Maybe the strange strip-mall location on Barbur threw me off or maybe I happened to go on a REALLY bad day but based on the mediocrity of every dish I am pretty certain there is no reason to return here again. It's a shame after such good expectations.

I read all the great reviews on Citysearch, so my son and I decided to try it, since he lives nearby and we both love Indian food. When we pulled up, I looked at him with the "" I don't know look."" But we remembered other reviewers stating not to be deceived by the outward appearance, and went in. Boy, what a treat. From the outside it looks like a cheap kinda sleazy restaurant / bar, but once you step inside you immediately feel at ease in a very comfortable place. The food and service were both exceptional. We ate much more than we meant to and rolled out of there rubbing our tummies with delight. We will definitely be back.

Hey, if you love Indian food you have to try the New Delhi Restaurant. My wife and I love Indian cuisine and have tried every restaurant in Portland and enjoy this one the best. The food is absolutely fabulous. The service is excellent and prices are reasonable. The strip mall location is a little funky, but parking is not a problem.

My husband and I went here based on the reviews on this site. We were extrememly happy with the food, service, portions and prices. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Saag. Both dishes were wonderful. We asked for medium spice and that's exactly what we got. Though I prefer my food on the mild side, the flavor was spicy without burning my mouth. The Naan was flavorful and freshly baked. The server recommended a perfect red wine by the glass to go with my food and it was an excellent suggestion. I highly recommed this restaurant to those that value high quality dishes and wonderful service. We can't wait to go back and taste our way through their menu.

Go for the buffet, which means go for lunch. It's pretty cheap for a great meal. I actually only signed up for this just to write a review on this restaurant. The service is great, family owned. Very good Indian food. Not romantic or super high class, but kind simply elegant nonetheless.

I went to this Indian restraunt on Barbur and 30th on my friend's recommendation and I must say the food was just fabulous........
I have been to many Indian restraunts around Portland like Swagat, India House, Curry leaf but when it comes to authentic tasty Indian food, this Restraunt I think wins the race by far.
I would highly recommend Indian food lovers to try this flavorsome Indian food at ""New Delhi"" but keep in mind that the family who run the place is going to be taking there first vacation home after 7 years from JULY 15th through AUGUST 25th so you should go either before or after those dates and you wont be dissappointed I promise :)

After reading the reviews for this restuarant, i decided to drive my convertible on this nice bright sunny day from Tualatin to Barbur Blvd and experience the indian cuisine. Boy! let me tell you the reviews were soo right! The buffet is very affordable and at $7.95 all you can eat...there is alot to choose from. I had the Chicken, rice, pita flat bread and some veggies. I must say, i drove past it on accident because it is kind of hidden, but overall, excellene variety of dishes, cvery clean and the people are really nice and will answer any questions you have if you unfamiliar with the items for lunch.
