I hadn't looked at the reviews before

I hadn't looked at the reviews before going in to miss delta for breakfast/brunch on Sunday... and I am glad that I didn't as it may have deterred me!! I was with a party of six. We were seated quickly, brought water and offered coffee immediately. We all ordered something different and most of us had ""special requests"" - which our waitress was very sweet about. Our food took a bit of time but nothing crazy or terrible... it seemed about average to me. And EVERYONE was super happy with their order. The portions are LARGE so it would be easy to share things. But everything was pretty great. I would definitely go back and even recommend it. Gravy is right across the street - but at miss delta the wait was shorter, the portions were bigger, the price is about the same, and the food was great :)

Out of Everything

I went for the fried chicken - out of white meat. They had frog legs on the board when I entered the restaurant - all gone. They were out of a beer on the menu I wanted and to top it of they were out of a desert on the menu my wife wanted.

Service was bad - under staffed - but the food was good.

Overall I'll give it another shot. I went a 7pm on Friday - next time 6pm.

True Southern Hospitality ...""NOT""

Ok, I am always a second chance stop in at any restaurant unless the food is so bad I cant stomach it. Yet, this place takes the cake on RUDE, RUDE servers. If you want to be treated like a person of color in the south 30 years ago this would be the place to stop in. I was seated with my children (bi-racial) at the same time with a Caucasian man and his son w/ grandchild at their six top. We agreed at the door to share the table because it was so packed. We ordered at the same time yet their food arrived before ours in fact we didn't get our food until they were done! I was shocked when the waitress turned it on us for ordering something that takes a long time. Funny thing is we didn't order anything but fried food and a burger. No fried chicken that takes 20 min extra or special orders. The quick fast stuff. But that is only visit number 1. Tonight we went again for it was happy hour so prices are cheap and I figured I would give them another chance. So we are seated and tell the waitress, one sweet tea, one sweet bourbon tea two sodas. We get our drinks and they are not sweet. I said excuse me this isn't sweet, The waitress said well honey you have to tell me you want sweet tea in a snotty manor! Well folks that did it, in fact she didn't even offer to bring us new drinks she said well i guess i can bring you some sugar! Are you kidding me. Why not ask us to go get our plates from the back door like they did before the civil rights! Take your chances... PS BBQ sauce is to smoky ..add some honey and a little more garlic.

Great Food & Atmosphere

We stumbled on this place and were very happy with our first experience. Service was attentive and professional.
I had a Bloody Mary that was had more veggie than Farmers Market.... and it tasted great.
We started with Fried Okra.... tasted like homemade, breading flaked off just like mom's and they don't throw out the end pieces!
I had jambalaya.... it was VERY spicy, but OF COURSE IT WAS! Excellent. My partner had catfish, greens and black eyed peas... and a side of hush puppies..... all were EXCELLENT.
The atmosphere is relaxing and fun.
Maybe we got lucky on immediate seating, fast service and great drinks and food..... so, we'll go back again soon.... can't wait!

Left hungry...

So sad to have gotten the short end of the stick here. After reading all the positive reviews I was actually excited to try their food. When I arrived with my party (it was 4 of us total) we were told that they didn't have room for such a big group and that we could either wait 20 mins or sit at separate tables. Seeing as how we arrived together we decided to wait. After about half an hour we kindly asked if our table was ready yet...only to be told that they had given it away to someone who had just walked in, but that they were cleaning up another table and it was in the ""better"" part of the restaurant. (versus the not so good side we would be seated at originally???) Again another half hour went by and yet again we asked if our table was ready. Only to be told that there was no other table and that the person that told is that was just ""covering their a$$ since they f*cked up"" By that time my excitement level is going down and I begin to realize that the negative comments are true and not just overreactions.

Worth giving it a try

Had been a bit unsure about going after reading all the negative comments so decided to call and speak with the manager to get their perspective on why so many negative reviews. She was very forthright in taking responsibility for their staff not communicating what was going on as well as their not being prepared for the onslaught of customers from a promotional coupon. She explained that they had made changes to lessen problems in the future. My dining experience on July 17 was extremely satisfactory. The service was excellent and the food came in a timely manner. Based on how much I enjoyed myself I wouldn't hesitate to go back again

All I ask for is honesty

Busy! Usually a good sign. 20min to be seated they said, 30 it was, ok. Another 20 to get our order in o.k. But now its getting late so when I ask how long are dinners taking, the smiling waitress said, ""15-20min unless you order the fried chicken, that's taking longer. About 25-30 min"", so fine, my 4 friends and I place our order, avoiding the chicken of course. 45 min later we are ready to go having not been given our food or an update on our food's progress, all I can think of is I've got to get up at 4 am to go to work the next day. I did ask how long it would take to get our dinner, remember! I would have been fine with a simple appetizer had I known the wait would be so long , but no 15 to 20min was the smiling waitress' reply. Her smile and attitiude changed when I said we had to go. We eventually got our incomplete order to go in 1 large bag tied together like we all lived together. Having separated it, we tried to explain why we were unhappy and the not-so-smiling waitress blamed groupon and a large call in order that was recieved before our order was put in. Hmph! What ever! Not my fault. Just came for dinner.
I ate my flat iron steak while driving home ,yes, with my fingers and I must say it was cold but potentialy good at one time.
Maybe when the owner learns to staff properly he'll have a better chance with return bussiness.

NEVER GO HERE!!

We were at this restaurant for almost 2hrs and all we got ""served"" was water and the two drinks from the bar friends ordered. We were quoted 10-15 min for food to be to our table....45min later we were ready to walk out. Our stomachs growling for having sat at their establishment almost 2hrs just to get food we decide were done waiting. We ask our server how long our food will take because we can't wait any longer, she scoffs at us and very angrily heads twords the kitchen to check. From there on out it got severly worse. She came back with a very snotty attitude and stated our food was ""on it's way out now"" so we ask the kitchen to box it up to go. She passes on our request with spite and ignores us for the next 10-15min while they box our food that was supposedly ""ready"". Any question presented to her in that time was either ignored or answered in a very snotty tone. We finally get our food...we state again that were unsatisfied and her reply is ""everything is make to order so food does tend to take a long time"" contrary to her earlier statement. We present our groupon and she proceeds to blame their shotty service on being overwhelmed since the occurance of the groupon(a weak EXCUSE at best). No tip was given or even deserved. I would suggest selling your groupon if you have one..it seems to inspire even worse service then normal.

Super Salty

Being from the South and new to Portland, my husband and I are on a mission to try every ""Southern"" place in town. Miss Delta's was our 3rd stop. All of their fried batter was WAY TOO SALTY (fried okra, shrimp, oysters). By the time we left the restaurant, I felt like I had eaten a salt lick for dinner. Most of the food was not very hot and in fact, when my husband asked to try a spoonful of gumbo the owner replied, ""let me see if the chef can warm you up some"", which led us to believe that it is not made fresh. Most of their dinner entrees were bland tasting. The fried catfish and hushpuppies were ok and the piece of cornbread was burnt. This is not a place I would take my Southern relatives to next time their in town!

Hungry? Go here

I went because someone had mentioned they had cheese grits. Well I didn't do the grits. I had hush puppies (big ole boys), a bowl (again hugh) of gumbo, collard greens (with port of course) and a cornbread muffin. The food was really really good. The greens were served in a medium size bowl that was overflowing. The gumbo, chicken, sausage, and shrimp, was served with rice. The hush puppies, well, were just good. Took home half of the gumbo and 3 pups. Also got a couple of muffins as well. As for the price, well, all for under $20....not to bad. Oh, one last thing. The sweet tea was good also and was served in a big ole glass. Recommend this place.

Comfort Food at its Best

I adore this place. Having lived in New Orleans, I can honestly say the food is as close to authentic as I've tasted in Portland. When I'm craving southern cooking, that's where I go. Great gumbo and the ambience is just lovely. It's often busy when I go, but the service is always great, and I usually end up taking an order of something with me to share with whomever couldn't join our group that time. The one in SE (The Delta Cafe) is great too, if you're in that neighborhood.

yummmm comfort, atmosphere, and staff who are like friends

I'd heard about this place, and the former Delta Cafe, and had high expectations. This was a new culinary experience: how do you know what your next favorite thing will be until you try it? The owner waited on us and was obviously invested in us (and everyone else) loving her comfort food, feeling at home. -Very attentive to us and to detail! The gumbo with a side of black eyed peas and rice was rich and I don't usually like cornbread, but this was different... and great. Drinks were amazing. The music enhanced the atmosphere. Definitely a new standard for attentive customer service, -and they were packed with a wait list! Can't wait to go again!

Southern done right

I had a great experience at Miss Delta. Being from NC, I am always interested in checking out what most places consider ""southern"" cuisine. At Miss Delta I certainly wasn't disappointed. Although not exactly authentic, Miss Delta offered great atmosphere, good service, and southern food done right. I especially enjoyed the hush puppies, which were buttery and flaky without being soaked in grease or thick and mealy. I definitely plan on heading down south again soon.

burnt, bitter, and wrong

I've had blacked catfish hundreds of times but this little number tasted like the crumb tray on the bottom of a toaster oven: the fish had no flavor. The greens were overly cooked and bitter. All of this on a money making friday night? wow good luck Miss Delta - think it might be time to look into a cook(s) who cares - the punk rock buringman duo I saw back there appear to have there mind on other things than food.

I was looking forward to my night out - ended up spending the night with a horrible stomach ache.

This is real canjun cooking!

The menu was limited but the 4 of us all order different sides and entrees. The best of them were: the chicken, the ribs, the shrimp creole, and the fried okra. Each had the full flavor of canjun cooking. The disappointments: the black eyed peas were flavorless and the pecan pie had too much sugar not enough pecans.

The service was great and the atmosphere had a quiet buzz to it the night we were there(Wed.)

Great Food, Drinks, Reasonable Prices

Wow! what a great meal. The caesar salad was one of the best we've ever had. TThere were a lot of pan fried oysters for $10, and they were done to perfection. The creole was spicy, but not overbearing, with tomatoes done just to the right point, not cooked to mush. The drink menu was extensive and the waitress' had great suggestions. It was late tonight, so they were out of a couple of the main dishes, but there was enough of a selection that it was no problem finding something good to eat. Service was quick and efficient. Dinner for two with hard drinks at $50 is usually not something to be had. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, any time. I know we will return again--soon.

Southern Perfection

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner last weekend, and all I can say is, wow. Parking was a nightmare, but that?s what happens anywhere on N. Mississippi on a Sat night. The food and drinks however, were amazing. We had a couple of drinks, which were good sized and delicious. I had the fried chicken, which the menu says takes about 20 minutes. It was worth every minute. The chicken was divine, moist on the inside, perfect crunch on the outside and not greasy at all. My boyfriend had the meatloaf, which again was perfection. Sides were all great, from the Coliflour bake, to the mac & cheese, to collard greens. The music and ambiance was wonderful throughout. Overall, I cannot recommend this place enough. I?ll be back next weekend with some friends to see if it?s a repeat experience.

Rough Diamonds are Beautiful

Great sides and entrees. Hush Puppies need work(too doughy, burnt on the outside)

Strawberry mountain blackened flat iron steak topped with blue cheese was fantastic for sixteen dollars.
Meatloaf with apple, bacon, and bleu was exceptional,
wine was above average, but a better European selection would be nice.

The service was friendly, helpfull and relaxed without the hipster quality that is so prevelant in small nieghborhood restaurants

I will go back, this place has great potential.
this is ten times the quality and comfort of Pasta Bangs
