If you have ever sat in front of a salesman and thought to yourself ""this guy is screwing me bigtime"", then you know how I felt talking to the vet when he came out to talk to us about our pet. I was in sales for a long time and I can tell when I'm being sold.
My story is pretty much the same as everyone else who has been screwed over by Dove Lewis and posted about it.
Our dog was acting very strange then lethargic so we brought him to DL and everyone was very nice and polite. When the vet finally brought us back to talk with us about our dog, he basically gave us 3 carefully scripted options:
1) Run a full battery of tests
2) Run 1-2 tests and go from there
3) Euthanize the dog if it comes to that
Wait a second... How did we go from talking about possible causes of a 7 year old, otherwise perfectly healthy, dog being lethargic to killing him???
I'll tell you why, because that's all part of their sales pitch. Basically they make you feel as though you have only 2 choices: pay the $1000's of dollars or your pet dies.
I could go on and on about everything between now and then but long story short, about $3000 dollars later, we are still at the same point as we were when we brought him in. They are not quite sure what is wrong and they want to run more tests.
Read all the other posts on yelp or citysearch saying the same thing. All the 5 star ratings say the same thing too, ""they are expensive but they helped my beloved pet"". That's wonderful but save yourself the $2000-$3000 dollars and take your pet to Tualatin or someplace else and get better or at least the same level of care without the (well ochestrated, very convincing) used car sales pitch.

It was Christmas night a Saturday, and my dog, my Baby girl Leelu was not well, she had been unwell for a long time and it was the very end...I couldn't ask her to wait till Monday. She was in so much pain. I called so many places and every place that was normally open on Saturday was now closed for the holiday. I can't blame people for wanting to spend the holiday with there families..I was spending it with mine but she was in a lot of pain and ready to let go of this world. All I can say is I am still weak with pain from my loss but so grateful that I didn't listen to the poor reviews of Dove Lewis...they were so kind so understanding so patient...I was a wreck and I was not an easy person to be around let alone have to converse with but they all of them were more than understanding...I don't know if they had felt the same pain I was feeling but they empathized so well I took it for sympathy..They knew, and they made the experience as easy as possible. Dr. Cruz....you may never see this, but we will never forget you and can not tell you the relief your understanding and compassion was.f at Dove Lewis working To ALL of the staff working Christmas Night and the early hours after, Thank you from the deepest of my heart Thank you.

I met with Josh Cruz, DVM about my cat Mittens. He took such good care of him and I could tell that he absolutely loves animals. I've read a lot of reviews on here and have only good things to say about this veterinary clinic (I've been here about 5 times). Any emergency vet clinic is going to be expensive because of the specialty of the doctors and the expense of the equipment.

My wife and I drove from Beaverton to take our 4 month old pure bred African Savannah cat to Dove Lewis after she had been stepped on and was urinating blood. After about 15 minutes of waiting someone came out to look at our cat. They said that she was looking stable but that it was a serious injury and we would be seen by the doctor soon. We waited for nearly 3 hours and had asked several times what the wait time would be, a girl named Kira at the front desk was incredibly rude and cold to my wife for no reason. We ended up leaving Dove Lewis and driving to the Emergency Animal Hospital in Tualatin and they were great. There were other people in the waiting room and it still took less than an hour to get a full examination including ex-rays and a diagnosis. Dove Lewis might look nice and I have no problem paying a premium for that but after this horrible experience we will never go there again. If you want to wait hours in a freezing cold room and be talked to rudely by a snotty little brat, then go to Dove Lewis.

I took my nearly 1 yr old pup to Dove Lewis for a partial blockage on Sat night. She was not in crisis but it was obvious to me that she had a recent blockage & I wanted her on IV fluids until I could get her to my personal vet. I didn't qualify for financial aid, if they even really have such a thing, & I was told if my pup had a crisis during the night & I weren't able to put down a $3,000 deposit in cash or on a credit card, they would euthanize my dog ""in a very humane way"". I was shocked. She was a healthy dog other than the partial blockage. Luckily my pup made it until early Mon morning when I picked her up & rushed her to my vet. Dove Lewis took one x-ray & kept her on IV fluids from around 8pm Sat night until 8am Mon morning without a crisis. No other treatment was provided & my bill was over $1,000. My vet took her in around 9 am & took an x-ray every 2 hrs until shortly after noon when he performed a difficult surgery to removed the small towel she swollowed. To be safe he kept her until Friday afternoon, coming in the evening to check on her. Several days later he removed her stitches & my bill was just over $900 & I didn't get the hard sell job to run more tests. When I sent Dove Lewis an e-mail asking why they advertise that they treat animals for free to save their life, they said they didn't have any more money for charity.
A vet tech that used to work for my vet had also worked for Dove Lewis. According to this tech, Dove Lewis spent a small fortune on a new state-of-the-art machine & discussed openly amongst the staff that they need to use it any chance they get so they can bill the $2,000+ charge per test to help pay for the machine. This is not the old Dove Lewis that cared about the lives of animals, although they would like you to think so. This is a new corporation that cares about their bottom line at the expense of the animals AND the owners' pocketbooks. I have since used the emergency clinic in Tualatin & am very happy with the treatment & the cost. My vet has since taken Dove Lewis' number off his answer machine & replaced it with the Tualatin emergency clinic.

They nickeled and dimed me for every single small thing possible, and what was worse is that they even charged me for a whole bunch of treatments my cat never even received. I had to go through the itemized bills with them many times to remove a lot of false charges. They even charged for using kleenex.
Go to Canby Vet Clinic in Tualatin instead for after hours emergency care - they're open from 6pm to 8am weekdays and 24 hours during the weekend. They're much more honest and kinder folks there.
Dove Lewis has very poor customer service, and the vet was not good either. After charging me to high heavens, they just euthanized my pet in the end and refused to negotiate charges that i felt were not justified, especially given that my cat died in the end.

My Peanut was suffering and in pain. I said goodbye to him the most beautiful and amazing way that I could have ever hoped for. Thank you Dove Lewis for being real with us about our baby and making our last experience with him as lovely as he was. You were far too expensive, but you were honest and kind.
I am sorry that others feel that they did not have as great experiene as we did. I will miss my best friend forever, but will be grateful to you for as long.

FIRST OF ALL THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THIS PLACE IS THE WEEKEND AVAILABILITY, EVERYTHING ELSE SUCKS! THESE PEOPLE ARE ALL ABOUT MONEY! HOW CAN EVERYDAY PEOPLE AFFORD TO SAVE THEYRE PETS WITH QUOTES LIKE (3,000-6,000) FOR AN INTESTINAL BLOCKAGE. FIRST OFF LET ME SAY NEW TO THE AREA AFTER RELOCATING HERE FROM SO.CAL ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO.ADMITTED MY FRENCH BULLDOG AFTER REPEATED VOMITING, AND LACK OF APPETITE. MET WITH ""JOSH CRUZ DVM"" HE PERFORMED 1 XRAY THAT SHOWED AN IRRITATED BOWEL, HE COULDNT BE 100% SURE IF THE GREY AREA SHOWING THE SMALL INTESTINE WAS BLOCKED, OR IF IT WAS GAS (GAS SHOWS UP BLACK ON XRAY). HE THEN BEGAN TO TELL ME THAT HE FELT DUE TO THE SYMPTOMS, THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH BLOCKAGE IN THE SMALL INTESTINE, WHICH MADE SENSE. JOSH CRUZ (DVM) THEN QUOTED ME 3000.00 MINIMUM TO START AND CAN EXCEED UP TO 6000.00 SURGERY ALONE, NOT INCLUDING PREP (BLOODWORK,XRAYS,)ETC. FIRST I WAS EXTREMELY SHOCKED AT THE AMOUNT THEN I PROCEEDED TO TELL HIM I COULD NOT AFFORD THE PROCEDURE, DUE TO MY RELOCATION, WE THEN DISCUSSED OTHER OPTIONS SUCH AS: EUTHASASIA, I WAS VERY UPSET TO DUE THE FACT THAT SINCE I DONT HAVE 6000.00 GRAND IN MY ACCOUNT I CANT SAVE MY BEST FRIENDS LIFE? I THEN STARTED TO TEAR UP AND START TO CALL OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS BACK IN SO CAL TO ASK FOR SOME SUPPORT. I GATHERED UP 2000.00, WHICH WOULDENT EVEN GET THE PROCEDURE GOING. HE THEN ESCORTED ME TO THE ROOM IN THE BACK OF THE FACILITY WHERE YOU SAY YOUR LAST GOODBYES, THE VET TECH BROUGHT OUT MY DOG AND ""JOSH CRUZ DVM"" THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL ME DUE TO MY FINANCIAL SITUATION, HE FELT EUTHANASIA WAS THE MOST HUMANE WAY TO GO, I WAS STUCK, NOT ENOUGH MONEY? I WAS THINKING OF VET CLINICS IN THE AREA SINCE IT WAS A SUNDAY NIGHT NOTHING ELSE WAS OPEN? HE THEN TOLD ME HE WOULD GIVE ME A FEW MINUTES ALONE WITH MY BUDDY TO SAY MY LAST GOODBYES. THE VET TECH CAME BACK IN WITH A CONSENT FORM STATING THE EUTHANASIA PROCESS, WHICH THEY WANTED ME TO SIGN, I REFUSED!! HE THEN REPLIED"" YOU NEED TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND I HAVE OTHER CLIENTS"" I WAS SHOCKED AT THE WORDS THAT CAME OUT OF HIS MOUTH? RUSHING ME TO SIGN MY BEST FRIENDS LIFE AWAY, MIND YOU, MY DOG IS ONLY YEAR AND A HALF OLD. I THEN WRAPPED MY BUDDY UP IN A BLANKET AND PROCEEDED TO WALK OUT OF THE ROOM INTO THE LOBBY AND DEMAND: PAIN MEDS, NAUSEA MEDS, AND FLUIDS WHICH TOTALED 280.00 I THEN LEFT ""DOVE LEWIS,"" TOOK MY DOG HOME AND PRAYED FOR A MIRACLE , THAT NIGHT GOOGLED ALL VETS OPEN ON WEEKENDS, FOUND A GODS SEND BY THE NAME OF ""TUALATIN VET CLINIC"" . I THEN RUSHED MY DOG OVER THERE WAS IMMEDIATLY GREETED BY THE FRIENDLY, AND COMPASSIONATE STAFF ESCORTED TO THE ROOM, XRAYS PERFORMED (MORE THAN 1, AT DIFFERNT ANGLES OF THE INFLAMMED INTESTINE) GIVEN A QUOTE OF 2000.00 AGREED AND SIGNED AND THE SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS, THE DAMN DOG ATE A HAZELNUT WITH SHELL, (BULLDOGS?) (CAN YOU BELIEVE DOVE LEWIS AND JOSH CRUZ DVM ) A REPUTABLE VET WOULDENT EVEN GIVE ME A REFERRAL? THOSE HEARTLESS B_STAR_DS! I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE SURGEONS AND STAFF AT THE EMERGENCY VET CLINIC OF TUALATIN FOR THEIR COMPASSION, SERVICE AND UNDERSTANDING! YOU HAVE TO BE RICH TO SAVE YOUR DOGS LIFE AT ""DOVE LEWIS"" IF YOUR NOT, ALL YOU GET IS A URN WITH ASHES! PLEASE BEWARE...........

We took our SADDI to Dove Lewis in early July of 2009 because the growth on the side of her mouth had become infected. I was completely upset when we went in, knowing our financial situation would make it difficult for us to receive proper medical treatment, but I had heard Dove Lewis had a history of helping people n our situation. The nurse who came in was very polite, but said there was little she could do for us and we should go see our regular vet (which we didn't have one) as it would be less expensive. The nurse didn't even give examination SADDI, just basically told us the services at Dove Lewis could not help us because of our situation. The follow day we went to West Slope Animal Clinic and as soon as the doctor saw SADDI he said ""Oh my that is nasty looking"", without so much as a thought for our emotional state. He said he was not an expert on cancers and suggested we go to another doctor that he gave us the information for. I tried to call twice and received voice mail each time, so SADDI, Devon and I drove to the address. It was at Dove Lewis. SADDI and Devon waited in the car while I went inside to explain SADDI's condition and our situation. The receptionist who helped me was quickly dismissive in suggesting Dove Lewis couldn't help us that even for the doctor to look at SADDI would cost $90.00, which we didn't have. The lobby was full of other patients with more coming in and out. I stood there being belittled and in tears. Emotionally I was drained and had to sit down. The receptionist looked at me and said ""I don't know what you want us to do for you"", as everyone looked over at me. Barely able to speak, I begged her to just help our SADDI. PLEASE. She released a heavy sigh and began searching the Internet to find other vets who could help us with our situation. She wrote down a few names and numbers and then said, in a very belittling tone, ""This is all I can do for you"". We then went to St. John's Companion Clinic and saw a very understanding and seemingly caring doctor who prescribed pills for SADDI to fight the infection and she said it could even possibly shrink the growth=2 0and possibly make it even go away. We should try the pills and return in a couple of months. The pills worked to clear the infection, but did little for the growth. We in less than a month later and saw a different doctor who said we were basically given false hope with the pills and SADDI should have had surgery to remove the growth. He offered to do it, confident he could remove the entire thing. We left feeling hopeful, but still confused why Dove Lewis couldn't have at least started us on the pills. Four days after the last vet visit, we were forced to put our beloved SADDI to sleep because she had become to weak to even stand and would not have survived to the scheduled surgery. After 13 1/2 glorious years of love, devotion, joy and friendship, SADDI died in my arms at the Tualatin Emergency Animal hospital, where we were treated with respect, tenderness and understanding.
Dove Lewis needs use there funding raise money to train their employee's to be compassionate, understanding and humane.
