For all of you guys talking crap about KIG, first you all need to get your facts in order...
1. They no serve BBQ Chicken they serve teriyaki chicken, or Shrimp of any kind !! Dumb A**#*
2. You no wait to be seated, you need to walk up to the counter and order your food!!
3. You have to pay for your food at the time you order, no bill comes to you after you eat...
4. The soda fountain is right next to the tables by the window, Hawaiian style hello you help your self...
5. No waiters or hosteses, come in order your food & find a seat if you can cause its always packed in there.
6. If you no can see the BIG F*%%@N menu on the wall at the counter you order at then you no belong in there cause you to stupid!
7. KIG can only sit about 9-10 people on the inside, if you no get one seat then too bad...
8. For some of you donkies they CLOSED on SUNDAY & MONDAYS so how the hell you get to eat there on those days!! You get your head on straight?? or you all eat the trash from plad pantry..THATS WHY BLAND YOUR FOOD TASTE & SMELL LIKE WET DOG!!
My Husband & I were born and raised on KAUAI, I lived in Seattle for several years, & for your info the pepole that own the Kauai Family on 6th is related to the owners of KIG, We had a meal at Kauai Family before moving to Portland a few months ago & like talk about over price, I was charged $17.50 for a quarter pound poke & $52 for a laulau & Kalua plate, that no could even feed my 7 year old daughter. KIG should raise da prices, cause the Hungry Man for $13.50 can feed me my 13 year old son & my daughter!! NO HATE CAUSE YOU NO CAN COOK... WANNABEES!!

One lazy day, looking for a quick meal, we stopped at the Kauai Island Grill. I was very disappointed. I have tried this place in the past and the food seems to have gotten worse over time. The BBQ chicken was dry and I could've cooked a better one myself. It looked like someone just took a slab of chicken breast and threw it over the rice. Served with it was rice, some bland cabbage buried at the bottom of the chicken and a very, very sm serving of mac salad. The kalua pork was even worse. It was bitter and tasted like gasoline. Even if it's further away, I'd recommend driving some place else. Not only is the food tastier, the presentation is better looking in the take out-box, for Pete's sake. I should of trusted my instincts when I saw how empty this place was.

HE SWIPED THE DRINK OFF THE COUNTER WITH HIS HAND - Jim - Today
Initially I had high hopes for the Kauai Island Grill coming to town. I thought that it would at least have more variety than Nohos. But I was completely disspointed with their food and their service. At least at Nohos before, they had a nicer staff. They were friendly, even though their food didnt have that much variety. But KIG has variety, but all of the food is the same. Its dry, some of my beef was burnt. I thought that there was at least some sort of vegetables inside, but all i got was some macroni salad. After eating a few bites, i couldnt take it anymore. Everything was just meat meat and more meat. And the meat wasnst very good either. Id rather go to the korean restaurant downtown, at least their meat has some sort of flavor and it's not so dry. I miss Nohos. KIG is another example of a restaurant that has taken away the atmosphere and serves food so mechanical and so tasteless. In reference to the guys and their negative comments about this place, I can see why. I can attest to what happened. I too saw him spill the drink all over the counter, and then used his bare hands to swipe the smoothie back into the cup. He hesitated and stood there staring off into space wondering what he should do, and then he decided to give that away to a customer. How much does a soda cost? he did it front of everyone. Thats so nasty!!

Ohana? Sorry man, I gotta say that your food was not up to Local Hawaiian Style Grindz, more catered to the Haole taste. The Teriyaki chicken wasn't marinated well and tasted funny. The mac salad didn't have enough, Hawaiian gravy - Mayonnaise! I've had so much better grindz at Kauai Island Grill, Bamboo Grove and even L&L Barbecue. The Kalua cabbage was an insult to local cuisine. Not enough salt or smoke. To you local's out there. Gotta pass on this one. No Ono!

I have not had their laulau, my experiences here are with noodles, burgers and beef plates.
The ordering process: Good so far.
The wait: Too long, one reason I avoided this place whenever I can.
The food: The Burgers were flavorful enough, nothing to complain about
except it seemed a tad smallish.
As for the Saimin noodles, I'd never order that again at the place.
The Beef plate looked appearing but the taste couldn't match the
appeal sort of speak.
If the food was dirt cheap it might be forgivable but for the price I couldn't help but think I was jipped somehow.

Another Hawaiian eatery owned and cooked by Philippino cooks. Ordered a Chicken Katsu which is average. However, the Katsu sauce is the worst I have ever tasted. A mixture of soy sauce, Worcestershire and water. Terrible. My late grandma can make 'bettah' sauce than 'dis'. Come on, $7 and I can 2 pieces of cutlets, some cabbage, 2 scoops rice and a scoop of macaroni that falls apart with no taste? Next!
When it first opened, I thought this would be an improvement on the other offerings in the city. With the advent of several other chains and like Onos, the competition is pretty fierce for authentic Hawaiian food. The menu doesn't exactly exude Hawaiian other than the barbecue meats, macaroni salad, rice plates and the spam musubi; it's actually more of a fast food version of Korean barbecue, cross westernized Japanese food (katsu and teriyaki), and noodles. The portions are generous as I ordered a chicken combo plate to go ($6.00) which comprised of barbecued marinated chicken (tasty with sweet flavor) and chicken katsu (breaded and fried with sweet katsu sauce on the side) on a bed of cooked cabbage (normally raw in Hawaii), a large scoop of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. It was very filling as I was already full after eating about 2/3rd of the plate. They used to have a self serve sauce station, but they now give the prepacked sauces with your order. A good point is that they do serve the food warm, unlike many fast food places who leave them under heat lamps (pre-cooked). Can't wait to make my trip to back home to the island to get the real island flavors.
I came to this place after it was open for a few weeks or so, the menu on the wall looks great, the pictures of the food looks like a typical Hawaiian BBQ place. I was thinking so at least I found a new Hawaiian BBQ a few minutes from my house. I ordered a chicken combo and beef combo for my wife, it was about $15.00. As I got home I was excited cause I was hungry. Sorry to disappoint you all, the rice was so soggy, the chicken was very bland, it didn't have much flavor and my wife tired the beef it was tough to chew and swallow. After a few bites she stop eating, I had to forced myself to eat a few more pieces of chicken, I was telling her, I don't want to waste the $15.00 I just paid. Eventually, I just gave up and we had to throw most of the food away and we had to go out and get some more food.
I don't want to be mean but it was really really terrible and it wasn't worth the $15.00. Ever since then we never went back to this place, and every time we wanted Hawaiian BBQ we go to Ono or some other places.
PS I gave it two stars, I can't be mean.
I drive by this place every night, it is pretty empty most of the time, mmm what happened to those who rated 4 or 5 stars and said the food was soooo good? Where are you guys now to support this restaurant? Was the food really that good or you guys just gave a high rating?

BEST authentic Hawaiian food in Portland. Cooked fresh before your eyes. These are hard working, warm hearted people who will serve you authentic Hawaiian food AND also the favorite tourist dishes too. As for the cranky customer whose mother in law or something was asked not to take up space in this tiny but wonderful eatery, because she just wanted to sit there and eat an apple, WOULD SHE DO THAT IN THE BENSON HOTEL? Please, people. Respect. Appreciation. It goes both ways. Avoid the terrible construction that snarls traffic on Murray by coming in the back way on NW Science Park Drive. You WON'T want to wait until the Murray/Cornell construction is complete.

We've been twice...
- Pleasant setting at least makes the hours it takes for a meal less burdensome.
- Didn't get food pois@ning.
- Didn't smell bad.
- Service is VERY slow, but sometimes not surly.
- Food is sometimes good. It can come out at different times- so it's either cold or someone has to eat while others are waiting.
- They sometimes add gratuity without warning you ahead of time and can add service charges.
- I could go on, but if you're up for a hopefully rare experience in poor dinning- check it out yourself.
