I am among the many who hold some puzzlement as to why Cals Pharmacy Skate went with that name, given that it is so close to an older shop...Cal Skate. I think both companies are cool and in today's world of 'almost but not quite the same' THING, few would care about a small difference in a name. But it confused ME when I first came here...and I gotta say that it is kinda uncool in my book to see how close to another companies name one can come, especially when that company was around from OLD school till now. Cal Skate was not a second idea in the corner of a Pharmacy. They are SKATE and always were. Cal's Pharmacy might have taken a step back and given their later and 'accidental' success a more unique name. I admit I have bought a few things at Cals Pharmacy...but I have bought much more at the real Cals...CAL SKATE. There IS something in a name...which is why so many companies spend thousands on their domain name...because they have also to register every name that comes close to it...so they won't get ripped off by 'wake riders'. I dunno, it just hits me wrong. Are we headed for CLONE DOMINATION? I hope not. Like the man said: ""Your call"".

Pharmacy is where it's at. They just moved to an awesome new location right next door to the Dept. of Skateboarding (my other most favorite spot in Portland). They have always been the place to go for skateshoes. But with the new spot, they have even more shoes and clothes than ever before and a board wall that is two stories tall! It is worth going just to see that! But most of all I love that the guys who run it and work there are all real skaters who love skateboarding and know what's up. Plus they are all really friendly and helpful and happy to put a board together or change wheels over for anyone.

Where do I start? My name is Howard Weiner and I have owned and operated Cal Skate Skateboards in downtown Portland since 1976. This shop not only has taken my good name they also have our logo on this site. Our shop is at 210 N.W. 6th Ave. in Old Town Portland and we have served the skateboarding community both in legalizing skating and building a system of 19 skate parks which are now being built throughout the city. I can't say how disappointed I am in these folks and the confusion they have caused. You decide for yourself but first come on in and check us out and then check these folks and make up your own mind. Take Care all and thanks for your support. New
Update April 4th 2011
It looks like Cal's Pharmacy is closed and no longer using our name which has been our only concern, Howard

They were even nice enough to build an indoor skate park for Portland (The Dept.)! The Pharmacy sells the best gear, at the best prices, with the best selection AND the best customer service! They even care enough to have a great pro team (snowboarding and skateboarding). If you would rather buy some cheap crap from a frat boy who knows nothing about skate and snowboarding, go to Copeland's and support corporate America.

The workers are helpful. All you need to do is to muster up some courage and ask. Very informative for the beginner skater/snowboarder. They'll give you an honest opinion, rather than a comment to sell product. If you are looking for something and it's not there. They'll order it for you.
