Insects and Spiders

Ants
Most ants that appear in houses are considered pests. Ants are very adaptive creatures and it is very difficult to remove an entire ant colony after it has been established. Ant control is more about controlling local populations than completely eliminating the colony and is an ongoing battle for the homeowner.
Spiders
Spiders are the largest group of arachnids and there are about 3,000 species in North America. These predators dwell everywhere such as on the ground, under rocks, inside and underneath playground equipment, among grasses, on plants, in tree branches, in underground caves and even on the water. The most common types in people's homes are brown recluse spiders, house spiders, wolf spiders, black widow spiders, cellar spiders, and yellow sac spiders. Spiders typically build cobwebs in doorframes, windows and eaves and also damp locations such as basements, garages, and crawlspaces.
Termites
According to the US Department of Agriculture, termites cause billions of dollars in damage to homes, schools and businesses every year. Although there are several species of termites in Northeastern U.S., the main termite is the Eastern Subterranean Termite. They are small white-to-tan insects that construct nests in soil and mostly feed on dead plant material, generally in the form of wood, leaf litter, soil, or animal dung. They can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops, or plantation forests.
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are small parasitic insects that look reddish-brown, with a flattened oval appearance. They feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals like humans at night and will hide in crevices of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and behind headboards during the day. Bed bugs are mostly active at night and can feed on their human hosts in relative secrecy. Bed bug bites can cause skin rashes and allergic symptoms.
Fleas
There are up to 2000 known species of fleas. The blood feeding habits of some adult fleas make them efficient transmitters of parasites and diseases. Rat fleas typically attack humans while human fleas can be found on rats, fox, and skunks. The cat flea, which attacks both cats and dogs, is the most common flea encountered in the home. All fleas undergo a complete life cycle from egg-larva-pupa to adult. Adult cat fleas lay up to 30 eggs per day and complete a new generation in less than twenty days. Populations can build up very quickly during the warmer months causing misery for both you and your pets. Effective flea management requires professional veterinary care for the pets, aggressive cleaning, and professional premise treatment of the infested home.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are an extremely common household pest. They feed on human food and often leave an unpleasant odor. They are potential carriers of dangerous bacteria and can cause allergic reactions and asthma in humans. The best way to prevent cockroach infestation is to keep food and waste in sealed containers. Frequent cleaning of the kitchen is also necessary to minimize the risk of infestation. Any entry points should be sealed and any leaky plumbing should be repaired. Cockroaches are extremely hearty creatures and some have been known to live for months without food or water.
Ticks
There are about 200 species of ticks in the United States. Ticks feed only on the blood of vertebrates, making them unfavorable pests in homes. Hard ticks and soft ticks are the two major groups that are pests. Ticks live in tall grass or shrubs and most ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground, waiting for a suitable host animal. They do not jump, run, hop or fly, although they may drop from their perch and fall onto a host. Most ticks will feed on blood from a wide variety of animals, with only a few tick species feeding on but one kind of host. Ticks can live as long as 200 days without food or water and they can live from 2 months to 2 years, depending on the species. Lyme’s disease is the most common type of disease from ticks.
Crickets
Crickets can be a damaging pest to wood, carpet, and other organic materials in the home. They also create disruptive noise at night, and leave bodies and droppings in the home, especially in the basement. Common species include the house cricket, camelback cricket, and field cricket. House crickets are very closely related to field crickets. They’re slightly smaller (3/4 inch long), light brown colored with dark stripes on the head.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are one of the most notorious types of flies. Bites cause swelling and itching on sensitive skin and they carry potentially deadly diseases such as malaria, West Nile encephalitis, yellow fever and dengue fever. Mosquitoes tend to live around water, but they don't need a lot of it to survive. They lay eggs in standing water and aren't very selective about location. Mosquitoes don't actually eat blood: The females use the protein that they get from blood to produce eggs. There are 200 species of mosquito located across North America.
Flies
There are 3 common categories of flies that are most encountered in homes and businesses: small flies, filth flies and biting flies. The larvae of these pests can be found in breeding sites such as aquatic areas, seaweed, decaying grass and compost piles, earthworms, manure, dead animals, cadavers, garbage, damp organic matter in all stages of decomposition, sewers, soil contaminated by sewage, potting soil, cheeses, meats, drains, rotting vegetables and fruits, fresh fruits, wet soil and sump pumps. Some blood-sucking flies are carriers of diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. Other flies carry bacteria that cause typhoid and dysentery.

Mice can also damage many types of household items such as appliances, stored clothing, furniture, wiring, etc. by gnawing and fouling with their urine and feces. They also transmit diseases causing pathogens and parasites. Mice are mostly active during dusk or night and they do not like bright lights. They live in a wide variety of hidden places that are near food sources and construct nests from various soft materials. Mice are territorial and one dominant male usually lives together with several females and young.
Rats
Rats have strong teeth that allow them to chew through glass, cinderblock, wire, aluminum and lead. Rats will eat practically anything, so keeping a clean home with food properly stored away is helpful to avoid rats. It’s also recommended to keep clean and dry sheds, storage areas, crawlspaces, and empty garbage cans frequently. Rats will also attack both animals and humans. Human babies and even adults have been killed in rat attacks.
