First, I'm not sure what cruise the other person was on, but it certainly was not the one I was on. It has always been my experience that unhappy people tend to be unhappy no matter how good or bad an experience was. Perhaps you need to reflect on all of your negative experiences and relationships and see that the only constant in all of them is you. With that said, on to the cruise. I was visiting Philadelphia from the Boston area with my wife. The person at the front desk of our hotel suggested we try the new Philadelphia Belle. We were told that it was a four course meal with live entertainment. It sounded similar to a cruise we had taken last year in Boston on a ship called the Odyssey, so we decided to give it a try. We called to make reservations, and I spoke to a reservation person named Diane. If they need to improve on anything it would be the people who are answering their phones. She lacked the polish and professionalism I would have expected from an upscale dinner cruise. I was looking to make a reservation not look for a new best friend. When we arrived to Penn's Landing we found parking to be easy and straight forward, although a little pricy. Any issues with the price of parking disappeared when we saw the ship, and I do mean ship. What an amazing sight. The Philadelphia Belle will take your breath away with her size and elegance. It looked so well maintained, when they said it was built in 1994, I did not believe it. Getting our tickets was a quick and easy process and then it on the gangway, no wait. Very efficient. They also did not have the annoying camera people trying to squeeze a twenty dollar bill out of you for a picture I could take myself for free with my phone. We saw the captain and the his crew as we boarded. We entered into a well decorated lobby are where directed up a grand staircase to the third deck. Upon entering the dinning room we where in awe again. It was such a vast dinning room, with three chandleries. This made the Other ship we had been on, the Odyssey in Boston, look like a row boat. Everything look so wonderful. The lighting was just right, and the music was that was softly playing was just perfect. We where shown to our seat and our waiter came over shortly after. We ordered a signature drink at the suggestion of our waiter ( I can't remember the name), and we where not disappointed. My compliments to the bartender, a wonderfully balanced cocktail. We ordered our meals and where pleasantly surprised at the speed and efficiency of the food service. Our appetizers where very good. Our main courses, however, were outstanding. I had the chicken and my wife had the salmon. The level of quality of these dishes would be hard to match even at a land based fine dinning restaurant where you would pay twice as much and not get a lovely cruise included. They where both perfectly cooked and super flavorful. I am getting hungry just remembering it. Our desert was good, after the dinner, was tough to impress us. The entertainment was excellent, although the volume was a little high. We got up and danced for a while, soothing I had not done in years. We also checked out the upper deck, and although it was cold, the views did not disappoint. In too soon we where pulling back in and getting off. It seemed that as we left everyone on the boat thanked us for cruising with them, even the Captain was at the gangway thanking everyone as the left. What a great last impression. I thought the cruise was great, and I would defiantly do it again.
Sophia's deserves 5 stars but there are two reasons why it doesn't have it. First let me give you some background on my hair.....I am an African American female with jet black hair...very thick..and NO PERM! Please keep that in mind when reading this review. Sophia's is run by Danielle, it used to be run by her mother...Sophia...but she's recently retired. The shop is beautiful! For it to be in that area of West Philly...you wouldn't expect it to look like that which is great. If you want the whole beauty salon experience for a decent price...this is the place for you. The staff is very professional...the typical gossip salon image...NOT here. They do have a receiptionist who is very friendly and welcomes you when you walk in, and also offers you tea or coffee (if it's in the morning). My stylist at Sophia's is Danielle...who is wonderful. The only "problem" with Danielle is that EVERYONE loves her so expect to wait if you're not the 1st person at the shop when it opens. She can't help it though...she's just that good. There is another stylist there, Ebony...I've heard she's good as well but I personally have never gotten my hair done by her. I haven't come across ANYONE who can do my hair as well as Danielle does. Because my hair is so thick and she knows to use a straightening comb for my roots. YES PEOPLE...A STRAIGHTENING COMB. She also uses a Chi flat irons...which make me look like I have a perm I SWEAR! Danielle uses very good products as well on my hair which help it to grow. Now I'm second guessing posting this review because I don't want anyone to know about Sophia's!!! lol. Anyways, what prompted me to write this review was going to other salons (one I JUST came from in Harlem, Sho Nuff, review coming soon) and NOT being completely or nearly as satisfied as when Danielle does my hair. Like I said before...no one can do my hair like she can. The ONLY two reasons why Sophia's doesn't have 5 stars is because...1. Danielle charges $45 for a wash and curl...(not a big fan of the price, even though its worth it...I just wish I could get my hair done more often) and 2. The wait time even if you have an appointment. But besides that...the place is wonderful!
I CAN'T BELIEVE THE BAD EXPERIENCE THAT YOU HAD AT ILLUMINATIONS HAIR SALON. I HAVE BEEN A CUSTOMER OF ILLUMINATIONS FOR 2 YEARS AND QUIET FRANKLY I LUV GOING THEIR. TO ME IT IS NOT THAT BAD AS FAR AS THE WAIT. I AM USED TO WAITING FOR EVERYTHING NOW THAT WE ARE IN A NEW MELLINIUM WHERE EVERYTHING IS A WAITING PROCESS. THE PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE OF TODAY IS THAT THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY MAKES PEOPLE FEEL THAT A HUMAN IS A ROBOT AND THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO MOVE AT THE FASTEST PACE. I CAN'T DEFEND THE RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL MANNER THAT THE STYLIST AND THE ASSISTANCE PRESENTED OF THEMSELVES. THE ONE THING THAT I CAN SAY IS THAT I ENJOY GOING TO ILLUMINATIONS TO GET MY HAIR DONE. MY HAIR LOOKS BEAUTIFUL AND IT ALWAYS HAS A SHINE WHEN I LEAVE. I ALWAYS GET COMPLIMENTS AND I RECOMMEND THIS SALON WHEREVER I GO. I HAVE NEVER HAD A STYLIST OR AN ASSISTANT TREAT ME IN A RUDE OR UNPROFESSIONAL MANNER SINCE I HAVE BEEN GOING THEIR. I AM SORRY THAT ALL OF YOU HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. I ADVISE THAT YOU GIVE ILLUMINATIONS A CALL AND ASK TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER AND TELL HER YOUR EXPERIENCE. SHE IS A VERY GOOD LISTENER AND I KNOW SHE WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE YOUR NEXT EXPERIENCE TO ILLUMINATIONS BETTER THAN THE FIRST. GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE EVERYONE DESERVES ONE. WE AS FELLOW AMERICANS NEED TO HAVE MORE COMMUNICATION WITH ONE ANOTHER TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE. THIS IS WHAT OBAMA THE PRESIDENT ELECT IS STRIVING FOR CHANGE. SO TAKE MY ADVICE BY TALKNG TO THE MANAGER AND YOU WILL SEE A CHANGE THE NEXT TIME YOU GO THEIR.
Great salon, I haven't been in a while but when I do go it's always fun. It's a good atmosphere everyone is friendly and the shop is beautiful and up to date as far as decor. The shop is ran by mother and daughter and they're beautiful ppl inside and out. The hair and styling that they do is superb. The price is the same as any other salon I suppose. Depending on what you get, the prices can be a little high but I think it's worth it. They can do it all at this shop sew-ins to locs and braids to coloring, but I personally feel their best is with short hair styles and coloring. I don't think any shop in Philadelphia can compare to them when it comes to short cuts and coloring. They also offer you wine while your getting your hair done and that's pretty cool. The ONLY issue I have is the wait, there has been times I got in at 10am and left at 5-5:30pm. So make sure you ask how many clients are before you, and if they're busy the day your getting your hair done. Other than that I definitely recommend onjaez shades of color to anyone that's interested in trying the salon, nice humble down to earth women who enjoy making you look beautiful. Also I forgot to add they're very knowledgeable about hair care. My questions about my hair and how I should take care of it was always answered.
Joseph Lentini is AWESOME!!! I wish I had found this curly hair stylist extraordinaire 20 years ago; it would’ve saved me a HUGE amount of angst over my hair! I have tight curly hair that I have abused for over 40 years until a hair stylist suggested that I let it go natural. I used to never go to a salon because I could never trust anyone to cut my hair, let alone style it. After having read all these reviews and testimonials to Joseph, I made an appointment for myself last weekend. I walked in with my hair hanging down, curling and kinking every which way in the classic “Wedge Style” it seems to have formed in the past couple of years. Joseph evaluated it and sat me down in his chair. Over the next 1 ½ hours he worked his magic on my hair, carefully considering every lock in his hands. When he was done, I was walking out of his salon with “Magazine Ad” hair – you know, the type of hair you see in a magazine ad and wished you had? Well, I HAD IT! It was GORGEOUS!! Instead of my curls hanging down, they bounced. I was on Cloud 9!! I even went across the street to buy a bunch of daisies because I was so ecstatic to find someone who truly understands and knows how to cut curly hair!! JOSEPH IS MY MAN FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!
WOW. I will write it again...WOW. I had slacked on my hair for three years so it looked pretty awful. I had my natural brown color on half of my head which turned into a brassy red on the bottom half...no structure, split ends galore. I was ready for a big change. BLOND with highlights and a razor cut and bangs (NEVER had highlights before). After mulling over where and who to go to for ages, I finally booked an appt. here with Whitney (upon the rec. of a friend who Whitney has also taken from light to dark and back again). All I can say is she performed a miracle on my hair. It came out 100 percent how I wanted it which I consider a miracle considering I was getting so many different things done. From the cut to the color, she absolutely nailed it. We were on the same page about everything. Plus, she is a total sweetheart and totally knowledgable about what she is doing. I looked and felt like a different person when I left and although the process took over 4 hours, it went by super fast. I told her she has a new client for life. I really cannot say enough good things about Whitney and the salon. And the price...about $150 LESS than I thought it was gonna be.
Frankly, cheapie nail salons are a dime a dozen in philly...and even moreso on south st. You can barely walk a few doors before hitting a nail salon or a baby stroller, and THAT my friends...is the truth. So what can set one of these nail shops apart? (because all the baby strollers look the same to me, so we won't even go there!). Well, super nice, clean, stylish, modern, great color selection, waxing , great customer service, reliable appointment making, and a manicure that lasts a solid 10 days. 'Tis what I received at Nail Polish Bar Spa for $18 + tip. Yes, you can get a cheaper (maybe $12 manicure) at other spots up and down south st....but this one is heads above the rest in terms of atmosphere and style. This is a place you'd spring a few extra bucks to bring a friend, or your mother, or sister...a nice little treat without nail fungus, crazy ugly nail art, or tumbleweeds. Super clean. I throughly enjoyed and will absolutely be back when in need of a nail place in philly. Because yes...they're a dime a dozen or a nickle a natch...but some just stand out. Nail Polish is one of them.
Let me start off by saying that I dread getting my hair cut. I hate it so much that it's been about a year since I actually stepped foot into a salon. I usually just get my mom or someone else to trim off my dead ends. Most people think I am weird for doing this but I have good reasons. Just about every time I get my hair cut I leave wanting to cry because they butchered my hair. I truly believed that no one knows how to cut curly hair. My mom got me an appointment to Signatures salon so that Joseph could cut/fix my curly hair. As usual I was very skeptical but Joseph has changed my beliefs! There actually is someone out there who knows how to cut my curls. At Signacurl not only did I love my new hair cut but they took the time to explain how to take care of my hair and recommended some great products. Joseph took his time and cut every curl with precision. He even had me flip my head over and cut my hair upside down. It was an experience! Everyone is telling me how much fuller and healthier my hair looks. I love it! If you have unmanageable curly hair you must go see Joseph!
I've been going to this salon for three years. I was always insecure about my natural hair but I had a coworker that had services from the salon and she said nothing but nice things . So one day I decided to call and make an appointment I asked for the first available and the receptionist (Malika) gave me an appt with Jasmine when I arrived I was greeted by the entire staff Jasmine came over and did a consultation with me I filled out a form and the shampoo girl came and directed me back to the bowel she washed my hair like no other lol Jasmine then asked me how I wanted it I told her my forehead is huge lol and I'd like to kind of hide it when she turned me around I could've cried like seriously I never thought I'd ever like myself with my natural hair but Jasmine she bought that beauty alive and I've been a loyal customer since I refuse to let another stylist touch my hair she knows what I want when I walk in the door ! Always professional & care about my plans for the day so she gets me in and out ! Love Illuminations , their family !
Attention CURLY HEADED PEOPLE!- 19128 curly hair I have very difficult hair. It is thick and curly. Most stylists have no idea what they are doing when they cut my hair...so I was honestly a bit scared to get it cut (but after avoiding it, it became necessary!). I got an appointment with Sara. (she has a full head of curls herself!!) SHE IS AMAZING!!!! If you have curly hair and have had haircut nightmares in the past, be not afraid!!! Sara works magic. It was honestly the best hair cut I have EVER had. I have paid a lot for haircuts in the past to just be disappointed. Most charge me extra because of how much hair I have. This was not the case here. I am no longer afraid to get my hair cut because I know that my hair will be amazing after going here. ASK FOR Sara!!!! You won't be disappointed :) She is very cool and fun to talk to as well! All in all... I have received compliment after compliment on my curly hair. I will be going back soon!
