IF you think that there is any reason to visit this rat trap other than to watch the owner make a fool of himself and anyone else who pays for the rotten sludge that the chef claims is food. The beer is often flat the food is always foul and the service is intermittent at best.

A group of us recently went to this restaurant because it was very close to the society hill playhouse. All of us left with nothing good to say about this establishment. We waited extremely long for our food and their were many mistakes with the order and also alot that they had ""run out"" of. The menu itself was quite different than what was on the website and they no longer have a seperate vegetarian menu. We asked to speak with the owner about our food and when we did he was very rude to us (He even went as far as calling one of the women in our party a foul name). PLEASE do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY!!!!

I recently just had the best romantic dining experience in a long time. From the moment we walked in the door the hostess gave us a warm smile and quickly sat us a table for two despite our lack of reservations. There were glowing candles on the tables along with silverware and water glasses, A giant fish tank sat behind us with some intruiging fish. She quickly brought us warm bread and took a drink order, which I had a special ""Vesuvio Eruption"" which was simply fantastic. Not long after we placed our food order it had arrived, Saku Tuna rare and crabcakes. The tuna was perfectly cooked and ever so nicely plated. The crabcakes were a golden brown with a taste to match there look apeal, I heard the cakes were the chef's specialty and some of the best in the city which I would have to agree. Within a few minutes of receiving our food the waitress checked on us to make sure everything was absolutely perfect, which it was! We cleared our plates and was offered dessert. Surely we went with the terimisu and chocolate brownie which were to die for! The chocolate brownie was more like a warm lava cake served with icecream..mmmm.. so good! It had to be one of the best restuarant experiences Ive had so far on this side of town. We quickly asked our waitress to book us a reservation for 4 this weekend in which we plan on bringing our friends.

A lot of other reviews have been complaining about the service. I found it to be excellent, as the waiter and hostess were both very attentive. The food was decent. My chicken parm was good but far from great. The biggest advantage of Vesuvio is the vegetarian friendly menu, which my girlfriend raved baout and absolutly lover her dinner. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a nice dinner with vegetarian options, but not as an Italian restaurant in general.

Our food took close to an hour to arrive.
Our waitress definitely hated life.
When the food did arrive it was not worth the wait AT ALL. Even our drinks tasted like dirt.
Oh and half of the things on the menu they were out of!
The cherry on top was when we saw rodents while waiting 20 minutes for our check.......

We (a party of 7) went after a show at Society Hill Playhouse and we were all disappointed. The menu was completely different than the website menu and limited, the server was not pleasant at all and the food was o.k. The tuna was supposed to be rare and 3 out of 3 tunas were not rare. In all fairness other workers and/or manager were pleasant but our waitress never even cracked a smile.

I have read nothing but negative things about this place from customers yet they receive best sandwich in america. Thats a JOKE. The service is extremely lousy, especially the waitresses and bartenders downstairs. Food is not great either. All in all there are so many more restaurnts in this area particularly Cucina Forte or Villa di Roma. Vesuvio is only good because of the bar. Other than that don't go, it's a waste of money and time.

We were very disappointed. We walked in the bar at 2:30 and nobody took our order for over 10minutes. There were more employees working than customers and the service was awful! After finally placing our order, it took over 30 minutes for the kitchen to prepare 3 of their ""famous""sandwiches. As we waited at the bar, nobody asked if i wanted a drink or anything. After bringing our sandwiches home, we realized they are totally over-rated. These cheesesteak BLT's aren't even the best sandwiches on the block with sarcone's just up the street. GFY, Vesuvio, GFY!

This place is the pits. The service is below lousy; it is rude and obnoxious. No one greeted at the door even though we had a reservation. We walked upstairs only to be told to go back down. Our salad was never delivered; our food was overcooked and inedible. The ""best sandwich in America"" is inedible and worst of all the waitress (blonde woman) is rude and discourteous. Avoid this place at all costs. The worst meal I have had in Philadelphia (or anywhere else for that matter) in years, perhaps ever.

I was excited to find out Vesuvio had a vegetarian menu. Unfortunately, the food my husband and I ordered wasn't that great. His Seitan Parmesan tasted liked diner Parmesan. My vegetarian burger was mushy inside. I think there is potential, but it needs work.

I have to agree with the person who said the staff was not educated. I had Tori as my waitress as well, and although she wasn't rude, she wasn't very attentive and did not seem to know anything about the dishes.
But the drinks were cheap, and the fireplace/pool table area was a nice touch. But the decor left a little to be desired. The food was unique and perfectly presented. Delicious!!

A friend and I went to Vesuvio's last week and our waitress was miserable. She had a lousy personality and was not interested in giving us any information on the dishes they had to offer, most of which sounded really good, but without a good description of the items, I was nervous to try them. Other than that the food was good, but our experience with the wait staff ruined the whole experience. If you do try this place, stick to the bar area, and don't request Tori as a waitress.

My husband and I live around the corner and because they have $1.75 Coronas on Fridays (as well as drink specials on other nights) we have been here more than a couple of times. Sometimes the smokiness is just way too much but overall for a beer this is a fine place. Jeremy, one of the bartenders, always takes great care of us and most of their food is pretty good. I had a burger I wasn't in love with but actually really liked the $5 plate of pasta - go figure. Their fries are good and they have three bar areas to choose from, in addition the restaurant upstairs (which doesn't look terribly appealing to me.) All in all, if you're meeting up with friends or someone for a casual drink then this could be a good call but I probably wouldn't recommend it for a date with someone you don't really know yet.
