I knew that Valley Green Inn was a charming historical building in a beautiful natural setting. But I had no idea the food was so good! Three friends and I went there, and we were all delighted with the food and the service. I started with an apple-pear salad--thin strips of apples and pears, chopped apricots, cranberries and lovely fresh greens tossed with a nice vinaigrette dressing. Then I had the blackened catfish which was delicious--creative both in taste and presentation. A bed of collard greens (yummy) was topped with two triangles of macaroni and cheese ""fritters"" (interesting and tasty) and then two huge spicy and delicious catfish filets (one would have been plenty!). Big hunks of delicious fresh bread were on the table. My friends also had salads to start, and between us, we had all four of the fish entrees. We were all were delighted with our meals. Portions were large, bigger than they needed to be. Price for 4 salads, 4 entrees, 3 desserts, 1 bottle of wine and 4 coffee or tea came to about $60 per person including tip, and we felt it was well worth it.

I went to this restaurant with my father and cousin about a month ago. I ordered the crab cakes, and my cousin ordered the steak. Both of us were quite sick for the days to follow. We both missed two days of work and the sickness was quite violent. We told my father of this and he called the restaurant to let them know what happened. He was blown off completely at first by the manager. The manager was quite rude to him, and did not offer to do anything about the situation. My father called back on another occasion and asked for the owner, who matter of factly told my father it was not his problem that both my cousin and I got sick. My father requested his money back for the dinner, since my cousin and I were not able to keep it down anyway, but was quite clear that he wanted the waitress to keep her tip as she was very attentive, especially considering she was the only waitress working that night. Also, keep in mind my father is a very calm and collected man, there is no chance at all that he was anything less than calm and collected during the entire conversation. The owner said he would absolutely not give us any money back, nor would he apologize for the inconvenience. Frankly, I feel this restaurant making myself, and anyone else sick, is no joke, and the fact that both the owner and the manager do not seem concerned that their restaurant is making people extremely sick, makes me question how their restaurant is run and managed. Where do they get their red meat? How long was that crab meat sitting in their kitchen? And furthermore, they should at least admit they made a mistake. To not apologize at all, not only do I feel these people made me sick, but that also feels like they are spitting in my face. I am strongly encouraging anyone, and everyone, not to go to this restaurant.

I brought my girlfriend to the Green Valley in for Valentine's day. The price was 65 dollars per person. I must say each of the four courses was supremely disappointing.
For my first course I ordered the prawns. Clearly there was not enough effort to devein them or they were of low quality. The prawns had a very strong flavor, so strong that I continued to smell them throughout the rest of the meal. Adding insult to injury they were overcooked.
My second course was a lobster-corn chowder. The soup was not terrible but had a green hue leading me to believe that tomalley was the main lobster seasoning. There was almost no meat in the soup and the meat that was in the soup had a texture closer to scallop than lobster.
For our main course I ordered the lobster tail and my SO ordered the filet medium rare. We split entres to have a half surf and turf. The lobster tail and filet were both over cooked. The tail had been sitting out too long and was overcooked resulting in a tough partially crispy texture. The filet was blackened and the center might have been considered 'medium' at a low end steak place. The gorgonzola/egg cake the filet came on was over cooked (recurring theme). And the bed of herb rizzoto my lobster came on was (surprise!!) significantly undercooked.
Desserts were okay. We were so over the place we ordered them to go. I had a apple springroll with carmel ice cream and the girlfriend has a flourless chocolate tart. I got around to the springroll later after we got home. It tasted a lot like a McDonald's apple pie - which was awesome because I like McDonald's apple pies, but then I remembered I can get two for a dollar from the drive through.
Which brings me to the service portion of our evening. It was not good. The courses came out slowly and our server continuously reminded us of how slow the courses were coming out by telling us they'd be out soon.
I ultimately felt cheated out of 150 bucks for v-day dinner.

Our sincerest apologies for this person's experience. Unfortunately, she and her husband had been seated behind a large party. This resulted in an extra ten minute wait for her salad, and a twenty minute wait for the entrees. We should have conveyed to them that there was going to be a little bit of a wait.
We also apologize that we were unable to discern her unhappiness with her food. Her server was given a positive response when asking about their experience, along with an 18% gratuity. If we had known she was unhappy in the slightest, the situation would have been remedied immediately. We also recommend reservations. While this party was a walk-in, a reservation would have allowed us to know that it was a special occasion and that they were under time constraints.

I have eaten at the Valley Green Inn several times in the past and always had a great time. This evening my husband took me there for dinner for my birthday.
The waitress was great!
The bread was stale, the salad took 30 minutes to arrive and then my dinner took an hour.
I understand that duck is not as tender as chicken however I don't believe it needs to be wrestled into submission so therefore I only had a few bites. The string beans still had the end and stem on it! The mashed potatoes I don't think were supposed to be reminiscent of salt and vinegar chips (with extra salt) and my husbands steak was not medium rare it was raw!
When I had the gall to look unhappy about my food taking an hour I was told by the women I believe was the maitre de that ""It is cooked to order you know"". Well, I don't know whose order it was but they must not like food! After that attitude why bother complaining about the food when it finally arrived. Especially, as we had to leave quickly to pick up our children and would not have time or desire for something else.
In sum, the waitress was great however, I will not be eating there again!

When I was teaching medical physiology at Temple Medical School in the early 1970's, one of my favorite peers, Dr. Catherine Michie, took my wife and I to Valley Green Inn for the Sunday brunch........to die for!!! Fantastic food, outstanding service, and an ambience out of this world. I now am retired in Oklahoma after 29 years of medical school teaching, but before I'm ""ashes"" I promise I will return to enjoy this fantastic establishment again. Best regards, Loren G. There is something magical about the setting. This historic inn set by Wissahickon on a biking, hiking and riding trail provides a sense of life lived more slowly. On a recent trip, the people who sat near us on the porch had come on horseback. As we enjoyed the scenery and excellent food, someone came up the trail leading a horse. Their ride had worked his way out of his hitching knot and was being returned by a friendly hiker. Now where else would you have that kind of experience. In winter months, you literally forget what century you are in. With a fire in the grate and the slightly musty sense of history enveloping you - good food and warm beverages provide an instant time travel experience, particularly if you emerge and show has covered the path that leads to the parking lot.

my fiance and i went to valley green last monday night for an early valentine's dinner. we'd both walked, biked and hiked past valley green several time but never had a chance to go. now we will definitely go back! the dining room is very cozy with a warm fireplace and the expected genuine colonial decor. it was a bit like stepping back in time. they gave us our choice of tables and we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the wine list. appetizers and entrees are reasonably priced and tasty with generous portions. for dessert we had some of their winter specialty drinks. they were so delicious and kept us nice and toasty.
the service was great, very friendly and personable. after dinner we looked at some of the photos near the bathrooms and our waitress was nice enough to come over and give us a free mini-tour! she explained some of the photos, talked about the renovations and what they found inside some of the wals. it was a great overall experience. afterwards, we went outside to say hello to the ducks in the creek and take a little walk.
we will definitely return to valley green; we're dying to try their brunch. it's meant to be fantastic. in the summer we'd love to dine outside as well.

My fiancee brought me here on one of our first dates. I've lived in Philly for several years and never knew there was a place like this. There is some much history in such a cozy little place. We sat in the room with the fireplace. I had homemade mozzarella that was awesome, and a perfectly prepared lamb. He had a caesar salad, with homemade dressing ( you can just tell the difference), and the special fish, that I had to try. Our server was so sweet, and she took the time to tell us about the history of the building. This is a great place for any occasion, and we might even have our wedding here.
