General Info

Since 2003, Twenty-Two Gallery has been showing local and national, emerging and established artist’s work. The gallery represents 22 artist members that work in many mediums including oil, pastel, watercolor, photography, sculpture, various printing processes as well as mixed media.  This bright space with great light, nestled in Philadelphia’s premier neighborhood Rittenhouse Square, has art openings monthly on the “Second Friday” of each month.  These openings include a wine and cheese artist’s reception from 6PM to 9 PM each month.

While the majority of the space is reserved for a solo artist’s show, the back area of the gallery will always show a sampling of the other members’ work.  We pride ourselves in showing a wonderful variety of quality artwork appealing to all tastes.

Included in the stable of artists represented is the photo artwork of the owner’s grandfather, Bruce Murray, Sr. (1893-1969).  This photographic archive spans over 50 years, capturing decades of historical, sports and Americana imagery in fine art black & white original photography.
The gallery also has periodic musical concerts.  These concerts provide classical, jazz and singer-songwriter musicians  a wonderful intimate venue to showcase their talents.

The gallery space is also available for small functions or meetings.  It may be leased for the day or evening and can provide a unique, intimate and tasteful space for corporate or private functions.

Great Customer Service

I am a new resident to the Philadelphia area and have found a new study spot. The service here is great! Scott and Audrey are extremely friendly and the overall ambience of this cafe is perfect for studying or reading. There is even free wireless internet!

Best area coffeshop and a great gallery, too

When I moved here I immediately tried out all my nearby coffee options. Twenty-two is by FAR the best - they make a better cup of La Colombe coffee than the La Colombe coffeeshop, and they do it with a much warmer, more welcoming attitude. Its the water - the owner has an extensive filtration system in the basement. Its also the staff - the manager really knows her coffee and can make a latte or cappuccino exactly to order.

Meanwhile, the owner's father was a famous photographer in baseball's golden age and his classic photos of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and others fill one wall; a rotating series of shows fills the other. The art is charming and sells briskly. Artists often come to sit in the cafe and talk to the owner. This makes it a great place to spend an hour or an afternoon.

The best cafe and the best gallery in the city!

Twenty-Two is an incredible gem in the Fitler Square neighborhood. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and comfortable and has attracted a cliental as diverse as the city - from artists to students to locals who've been apart of the neighborhood their entire lives. The owner and other employees are always friendly and are very knowledgable (about everything from sports to comics to local history). The gallery really adds to the community, and the cafe is a great place to study, read, or just sit and chat while enjoying a delicious sandwich from dibruno brothers and a cup of la columbe coffee.

favorite neighborhood spot

I've come to find this friendly neighborhood cafe to be indispensible. From its wireless connection and its mix of neighborhood regulars to its bright window and open layout, nothing I've found in Philly comes close to feeling as welcoming and accessible as 22. Its exhibits and wonderful permanent collection of photographs taken by the owner's grandfather also add to the spot's inviting nature.

Setting the Standard for Neighborhood Cafes!

It doesn't get any better than this one-of-a-kind cafe/gallery near Rittenhouse Square... Enjoy a cup of delicious (and always hot) cup of La Colombe coffee or a DiBruno Bros. sandwich while surfing the net (for free!) or admiring the collection, including a permanent exhibit of black and white photographs of baseball greats Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, and others taken by the owner's grandfather. Despite the free Internet and good food, I come more for the great mix of students/art connoisseurs/neighborhood folks that make this a genuine community coffee shop as well as the friendly owner/staff always happy to chat about the art or the daily selection of soups and sandwiches!
