If you're really hungry, I would not suggest going to Ms. Tootsie. First off the wait for 2 ppl was 50 mins on a Friday evening. Once we were told that our table was ready the hostess took forever to find us a table after just deciding to seat us right by the door. There was no place settings, no candles or condiments on the table whatsoever. The server took forever to take our drink order. We both ordered the iced tea which was so watered down that it wasn't funny. The waiter seemed preoccupied so it took another wait for her to take our orders. We ordered no appetizers and we're not given any corn muffins until like 40 mins after. Our order took about 55 mins to come from the time we were seated to time the food actually got there. The bbq wings were burnt and it looked like they just covered it with bbq sauce. The potato salad was bland and needed salt BAD. The pork ribs were good but we're like warm at best like it was sitting for a while. The Mac and cheese was awesome while the portion size of the sweet potatoes was very small. The chances of me returning to Ms. Tootsie is slim to none. Also the bathrooms could be alot better maintained. For the amount of business this place does the conditions and service should be far superior than what we experienced. Highly disappointed. The waiter was not tipped because frankly she did nothing to help the situation either.

I don't know what's happening, perhaps there is change in chef, but my last two dining experiences at Ms. Tootsie's was anything but desirable. I dined there last night with my cousin and ordered three sides, collards, Mac & cheese and yams. The only item I enjoyed was the yams. The greens were painfully salty and the Mac & cheese was very dry. This is the second time I experienced disappointment at this restaurant, which I used to enjoy. Perhaps they should have spent money on hiring a new chef instead of updating the restaurant. The food was better when the place was a tiny over crowded joint. And please delegate a host at the door!!! We stood a the door for 6 minutes before anyone approached us.

One word comes to mind when I think about the experience that I had - bliss. From the friendliness of the staff, the attentiveness of our waitress and the variety of dishes to chose from to the deliciousness of the meal itself, it was heavenly. The atmosphere is inviting and intreguing. The bar on the 3rd floor was very cool as were the specialty drinks that we had while waiting for our table. I felt like I was in a friends home. I highly recommend the seafood platter with the lobster mac-n-cheese and sweet potatoes followed by a slice of red velvet cake...to die for!

This was our first visit to Ms. Tootsies...and we will definitely go again!!
From the moment my husband & I walked in, everyone was so pleasant and immediately created a very welcome feeling. The atmosphere was cozy and really encouraged conversation.
The food overall was tasty, but the fried shrimp were EXCEPTIONAL!! With just the perfect amount of breading to add a little crunch, each mouthful was all shrimp. The collard greens (cooked w/turkey..for those health conscious eaters) were tender and succulent.
Pricing was average for a night out....definitely a place to visit in Philly!!

We stopped in on Saturday about 5:30 after a long day trip to Jersey shore to explore the various towns. Had heard about Ms. Tootsie's Fried Chicken on Food Channel and being from South we were in the mood for comfort food. We were told it would be 60 minute wait so we sat at upstairs bar and had a few drinks. The bar keeper was extremely polite and attentive, the other diners waiting were freindly and the atmosphere made the time pass quickly. The food was excellent from the chicken to collards, cabbage, mixed corn, corn muffins (authenic) to sweet potato cheescake. We shared veggies among the three of us to taste them all. The group at table next to us had ties to UGA as does my wife. Lots of laughs, great service, and again excellent comfort foods.

At 30 something years of age dining has become an all encompassing experience. I expect good food, service, and a safe environment. Gone are the days when I was willing to put up with substandard service for a ""banging burger"" or great hot wings. I am proud to say the service I received at Ms. Tootsies has been nothing less than outstanding. Management has been available to discuss and answer any of my concerns. While this should be common restaurant etiquette, it is not. I just had a recent experience where I attended a restaurant in my hometown and the management was not very attentive to the needs of my party. Perhaps Ms. Tootsies should consider relocating to the DC Area. I have enjoyed the service at Ms. Tootsies so much we have discussed them catering my wedding.

I am visiting from Atlanta with my son and we wanted something beside cheesesteaks so I can across Ms Tootsie. I muse say I was a little disappointed when I wanted to have the fried chicken and the waitress said they were out of dark meat. So i changed my meal to smotherd pork chops which was great. I got the collard greens and mac and chesse. We got so much food that we had to get to go boxes. Now the service I asked the waitress to change my drink because I did not like the fruit punch and she rolled her eyes at me with a serious attitude. I was going to leave at that point but I said I will give the food a chance and not let her mess up my day even more after there was not dark meat chicken. The corn bread was great and I am not a corn bread person. I must also say that there special drink of ice tea was wonderful. It tasted more like a fruit punch than an ice tea. If you are every in phiiy please visit this spot I am sure you will enjoy. I plan on visiting again when we return.

So, I did what I always do when my husband and I are traveling to a city looking for local flavor - I did a review search on the places people told us about. Ms. Tootsie's reviews helped us decide and I'm glad we did. Our waitress was straight up Black Southern Princess! She guided us through our decisions of smothered porkchops, mac/cheese and collards. I agree that the cornbread will melt in your mouth! They ran out of the special butter so I can't comment on that. The best part of the evening after the food was the tour she gave us of the restaurant. Little does she know - her great service may get them my husband's coporate business. The one complaint I have was that the drink specials tasted horrible - the great news is that they replaced the drinks until I was happy. Looking for good soul food in a jazzy urban setting - this place is it. Oh, don't forget to swing by, put your name on the list and enjoy downtown until your table is ready. They called my cell 45 min into the listed 1 hour wait.
My husband and I dedided to go to Ms. Tootsies to have dinner. We have had some issues with this establishment before so we decided to call first. The lovely woman who answered the phone assured me that it was still ok to come in and have dinner. You see they were closing at 11pm and we wouldn't arrive until 10:15pm. When we arrived we were seated immediately! The waitress took our order and brought our drinks. I said to my husband wow this is gonna be a good night. 15 minutes later the manager comes out and informs us that the kitchen was CLOSED for the evening and there was nothing he could do. The manager offered to take care of us the next time which was quite gracious of him but I'm not gonna take him up on the offer. I never went to an establishment that closes the kitchen 45 minutes before they close and doesn't even inform the waiters not to take anymore orders, especially when we called ahead. Ms. Tootsies has great food but the service is the worse!!!!! This is the third time that my husband and I had a bad experience at this place. 3 strikes your out!!!!!!!!
I'm from Tennessee . I was home sick so someone told me about Ms. Tooties Restaurant . When i walk in i wonder was this the right place, I could smell the southern cooking. The sevice was great and the food was good .I wonder if that had a southern cooking . I'm determine if a place doesn't know how to fried chicken they really don't know what they are doing.
This place took food to a different level when it come to southern cooking. I had fried chicken mac&cheese and cab.needed no salt or pepper . keep doing what you do in Phil. its was awesome.

I recently went to Ms. Tootsie's for an exemplary dining experience on a rainy day (Friday, July 8th). I am not familiar with Philly because I live in NJ and I am a regular patient at Univ. of Penn Hospital. I decided to go down South Street and it was an easy ride. Unfortunately I forgot about the hours and arrived at 4:30 PM. I went in to escape the rain and they graciously seated me at the two person window table. I explained I would be happy to wait until their 5 PM serving time but the pleasant waitress brought me a menu and asked what I wanted to drink.
Let me say at the outset that I go to a restaurant for the FOOD! Cleanliness, service, ambiance, etc.are secondary. I have a smoker at home and 3 deep fat fryers, so I know a bit about soul food and ""Q"" preparation. This was easily in the top ten of fried chicken that I ever had (in my 57 years)! It was crispy, moist and hot. The real trick with fried chicken is keeping it from drying out as you eat it after you cut into it. I cut my breast into 3 pieces and pulled it apart. The last piece was just as moist as the first. The sides all looked delicious. The mac and cheese was great. I wanted something plain so I tried the rice and gravy. It was on the plain side (as expected) but the gravy was very good.
The intro corn muffin was simply the best I ever had. As good as the accessory strawberry butter was, the muffin was sweet and full of corn taste all on its own. I could have eaten 6 of them with a stick of warm butter and been content. The sweet tea was delicious.
On to the desserts, which were mostly exemplary as well. I had one dessert with my dinner and took home all the others. The sweet potato pie was simply the best I ever had and for $5 a large slice, I was happy. I am not a huge fan of sweet potato cheesecake and I like a heavier cream cheese frosting on my red velvet cake (the cake was delicious however). But the dark side of the moon cake made my chocoholic wife and daughter very happy, even after a day or two in the fridge! The lemon pound cake & carrot cake were also delicious.
Needless to say I will be returning for many more visits every time I go to the hospital for my follow up visits.

I had an excellent time at Ms. Tootsie's. I had the fried chicken, which is not easy to make (I don't care what people say). My friend had seafood and that is what I will order next time. i wanna try it all! The sides were great - I had the greens and yams (yams to die for) and hot corm muffins that were right on the money. Great place to take family members or have an initimate dinner with a friend. The ambiance is perfect for that. Thanks Ms Tootsie's!
