Distrito is a vibrant celebration of the culture and cuisine of Mexico City with a menu focused on the diverse street foods served in what is known by locals as the Distrito Federal (D.F.). Distrito Tacqueria is our first-floor casual eatery featuring an approachable menu by Chef Jose Garces. Distrito offers a full bar featuring signature margaritas, over 250 tequilas and beer towers festooned with sugar skulls holding over 128 ounces of beer. The second-level dining room is a lively backdrop for Chef Garces’ modern Mexican small plates. Styled in pinks and greens, the restaurant features more than 600 hanging masks of Mexico’s Lucha Libre - and a four seat booth fashioned from an authentic VW Beetle, the official taxi cab of the D.F. Where is the tequila in the margarita?

Visited the resturant on Wed 9th February 2011 around 5:30pm, for the first time, where me and my 7 co-workers were warmly greeted and seated upstairs. This was the first time that I had visited a resturant where the appetizer portions were larger that the entrees. The food was over priced for the portions that were served. Most of us ordered marqaritas which were extremely small for $10-$12. The margaritas seemed not to contain any alcohol. Prior to going there I had been told that the "" Margaritas were second to none and that they really packed a punch."" Almost everyone in my party had two drinks. The following day at work , we were discussing the Distrito. Most agreed that the food was very tasty although portioned small and almost everyone said that they wondered what happened with the margaritas. Most agreed that we were served virgin drinks (without alcohol). We all agreed that if we went again that we would just order ""shots"" to ensure that we would get the after work buzz that we all were expecting. After all has been said and done, I would say that $374 was spent for a couple of hours of conversation and appetizing.

Eh...I probably wouldn't go back.

This place has good food if it was a lot cheaper and had bigger portions. A lot of the staff is somewhat rude, waited over an hour with a reservation, etc..

35 dollar tasting menu per person was honestly worth about 12 dollars MAX....they do a LOT of up-selling here and it's obvious..which is one of my biggest pet peeves. anything you ask you are directed to the most expensive option from the bar to the food. I am not cheap. I'll happily pay 100 dollars on myself if it's worth it but this place is not. They even charge for regular salsa?! Are you kidding me? These dudes need to tkae a trip to SoCal and see how it's really done.

My husband took me here for my birthday..I loved the place, the food was amazing. The ambience was great, I was very excited about the taxi table. Very cool!!

Very, Very, Good

Just wanted to say that I went with my family last night and found this place to be phenomenal. The decor is great, and the food is delicious. Though the plates are small, if you've eaten that day, two to three dishes should satisfy you. So, instead of ordering all your food at once, ask your waiter if you can order in increments. I recommend starting with the Guacamole Chips, then the Chicken Enchilada, and then moving on to the Chicken Tacos. End with the Tres Leches Cake.

Not up to par with other Garces restaurants

First off, I love Jose Garces' other two restaurants (Amada and Tinto). This restaurant does not come even close to his other two. They went with a modern interior, and I understand the need to not want white table cloths, but I think they went a little over board. Instead of looking cool it looks like a chain restaurant or a Starr restaurant.

Hostess was not rude but not polite when we arrived. Despite having a reservation, a table was not ready. We ordered a total of 6 menu items. Only 5 arrived at the table. The guac was disappointing. way too much lime in it. The other dishes were okay, but liked the refinement that I have seen at other garces restaurants. Many of the items were ""modern"" or ""fresh"" takes on traditional dishes. For my money, these conceptions failed to meet up to their traditional counter parts.

Dessert was pretty good. However, we also ordered coffee, which was never served and had to be taken off the bill.

All in all, not worth the trip out to University City. I still give it three stars, because the food was not bad, and its still a fun environment. However, for the money you are going to drop here, I suggest going some place else.

Great food in mini- tiny postions

My wife has decided to change careers and go back to school, so we have just start to discover University City (we moved to Center City 4 years ago). For her first week, I decided to take her to Distrito mostly because we are Chef Jose Garces fans (Amada and Tinto).

I have to say the location décor is like blend of Continnetal and El Vez. It’s a fun place but is border line in the too much and exuberant decoration.

We had the Tacos Carnitas, Queso Fundido, Ceviche de Camarones, Platanos con Crema, and the Chilango. Food quality and the all ingredients used are top notch, great taste. Overall: the food is great.

Service is terrific and our waitress was sweet, no rush, and very professional.

But the food portions are ridiculous small. I know the concept is similar to a tapas place and I am a big fan of Amada (despite their prices will make any Spaniard to cry) and I visit Barcelona twice a year for business so I eat a lot of tapas. I have to say their portions are by far smallest tapas or dishes I have seen in a while.

Margaritas are good and even the dessert (we had the flan) was great. However, the flan was so small that we barely felt we had any.

Just work in the portions especially you are located in University City. We paid around $85 and we were ok because I am used to Amada and Center City prices, but I am not sure students would be able to catch up if the portion is so small.
