It was my first time at Benny the Bum. I am from NYC originally. Now residing in South Jersey.
I am so happy to have found out about Benny the bum. I no longer need to travel to New York's City's, City Island for excellent seafood.
I ordered the Dungeness crab with Old Bay seasoning. I have never in my life, so far, tasted such a well seasoned crab. Most places either apply too much, or not enough. The food was excellent, and worthy every penny.
The only concern, I have is the faucet water served with the meals. The water tasted like the pipes they came out of. I'd rather pay for bottled water next time. I ordered the raspberry iced tea, it also tasted like faucet water. Perhaps this eatery could use a water purification system. Other than that, every thing else was gravy!!!!
I have read the reviews regarding loud music playing in the establishment. Thank goodness, the Sunday evening I went, it was quiet!
The owner needs to understand, everyone doesn't appreciate the noise. A quiet more relaxing atmosphere would be in order. Give your patrons a choice in the matter.
...............Long live Benny the Bum!!!

what a disappointment! On a positive note......... the Coores beer was cold beyond that the Parking SUCKS......the restroom accommodates (1) at a time? The food was GREASE spoon and left me queezy.
Don't know who they cater too. Walked in and you will see a statue of a fisherman..... must be a seafood place? The buffet served chicken-parm and wings....must have been chicken from the sea. After an hour inside it was evident that it was a (Bar, Buffet, cheazey Night Club) The LOUD music and disco lights made it impossible to talk to friends without screaming in the ear. Clearly they are confused ..... in summary if you’re looking for a place NOT to go you’ve found it here!

Took the family to Benny The Bum's for dinner on a Sunday evening. Very nice looking place inside, with a nice looking restaurant and a nice sports-bar with large LCD TV's showing a few different games for the viewing pleasure of the patrons.
Our waitress was very professional, and very attentive. The food was pretty good. We had Clams Casino as an appetizer, and although the clams were a bit smaller than I would normally like to see for a dish like this, they were well-made. For the entrees, we had dishes like Seafood Chesapeake, Fried Shrimp and Chicken Parm. All were prepared nicely and we were all very happy with the fare. The drinks and dessert were all very acceptable for the price too.
Where Benny the Bum's will lose you in a hurry is with the ambiance. I have no issue with a sports bar atmosphere on one side of the restaurant, and music on the other, but the staff had the music SO loud in this place that it was quite literally hard to have a conversation. This is no exaggeration! In my opinion, it is quite unprofessional to have several large screen TVs on for the patrons, with NO TV sound and NO closed-captioning to make up for loud music, and to be quite frank, the music was the type you might hear in a nightclub, and just as loud (not kidding). This type of music is not for relaxing and enjoying a game on TV at the bar, nor is it appropriate for those who want to have dinner with their families. It was very loud dance music, and I saw nobody dancing or even appearing to be interested in the music. It was quite obvious that some of the younger wait-staff was enjoying themselves in testing out the limits of the sound system with inappropriate music. We literally had to shout to our waitress, and SHE told us that she goes home with a headache from it almost every night. No way! Seriously!?
In short, Benny The Bum's food isn't bad at all... just get it to take-out...or bring ear-plugs, cause you are gonna need them,

A great night out with friends and my wife turned out to be a terrible night after my wife and I retired for the evening. We shared our dinners of shrimp and crab cakes. The service was ok but the food was not. We spent the night in and out of the bathroom. The next morning was not any better. Not until the afternoon did we get some relief. I Emailed BTB to let them know what happened, and asked them to reply. Never happened. I will not recomend this place to anyone. Better to eat at Mc Donalds.

I am not sure why people always tend to be picky...I love eating at Benny the Bums. They have great food, although the seafood tends to be on the pricier side. But what do you expect to pay? I'd rather pay a little more for great quality.
Service is service...sometimes a waitress is rocking it and sometimes you get someone that's a little distracted by the hustle and bustle going on. Patience people!!! I've always had a waitress that was friendly and helpful. If I didn't like something they were more than happy to fix it for me as best they can.
If you want something truly wonderful to eat, then try the mozzarella sticks/wedges. They are fresh and wonderful. Finish your meal with a brownie sundae and you'll be exceptionally full and happy.

I visited BTB with my family a month ago after previously ordering a fabulous take out dinner-food was warm and delicious. Unfortunately out dine in experience was horrible-so bad that this is the first time I ever felt the need to write a review.
I must preface this review by saying that we are Asian and all other 4 parties were not (Caucasian). We were the second party to sit down in our area on this very slow and rainy day. As we were seated, he first party was placing their order. We placed our order and after 15 minutes another party was seated and 10 minutes later the fourth party seated.
We are not a loud or rude family and the waitress was, polite. However, the two parties who were seated after us got their food about 30 minutes before we got our meal AND our food it was cold AND the appetizers arrived after the main course arrived. No, I did not send the food back- we know better than to do that. In retrospect we should have just left. I upon serious reflection of this experience I realize that we did nothing wrong- we were not loud or rude- in our country wait staff are ofter highly educated and overall being respectful to everyone is important in our family. I believe the waitress was at fault for our poor experience because the only reason the food would come out cold is if she let it sit there and choose to serve everyone else. We tipped fairly (10%) but I wish we left no tip.
I moved to this city 2 years ago and have not experienced discrimination once until I visited Benny the Bums. I WILL NEVER GO TO BENNY THE BUMS AGAIN! I would have rated this establishment a negative rating if I could because I really could have done without this experience.

The Place is beautifull, but I went about 1 month ago and ordered a Ceaser Salad. It tasted like raw Garlics crushed in lettuce with grilled chicken. I did not eat it, the waitress asked me how it tasted, I told her I hated it.. she smiled back. I guess its good if you like RAW GARLIC
Today I ordered the Talapia. The tomatoe topping tasted a few days old. It looked asthetically good, but the taste was not satisfying to me.
The portions are also pretty small.
a Tip to the owners, you need to give this very nice looking restaurant some TLC.

I am writing to describe the abysmal experience we had at this restaurant.
We went BTB because we had experienced good food, good service and a pleasant atmosphere in the past.
We walked in at about 7:30 pm on November 26, and right away noticed that the music (not live, recorded) was very loud. We asked if there was a part of the restaurant that wasn't so loud. The hostess said that the entire restaurant was about the same, but that they would try to turn it down.
She seated us, and a few minutes later, the music got turned UP. Later we realized that she seated us RIGHT IN FRONT of the speakers for the live band.
Even so, it took quite a while for the food to arrive.
When it arrived, it was not to the quality that we were used to. All of the seafood was flavorless.
We waited for our dinner. Our waitress asked if we wanted more drinks, and we asked if it was possible to turn the music down. She said she would see what she could do.
A few minutes later, the music got even louder.
Then the testing started for the live band. So both the recorded music, very loud and the testing, very loud, were happening at the same time.
Finally our meals arrived. I ordered crab over pasta, and it was utterly flavorless.
My sister and mother ordered the seafood Chesapeake, which was a splurge for them. They described their meal as rubbery.
Then the live music started. The hostess had seated us in front of the speakers, so it was intolerably loud
It was horribly loud. It was so painful that we couldn't eat our meals.
Even with my fingers plugged directly into my ears, I could hear the music clearly and loudly.
The staff were not helpful at all. We asked if there was a quieter part of the restaurant, and they looked at us like we were nuts. One of them said ""Why are you asking me, I just work here.""
Finally we left. I paid for the meal, mostly because I just wanted to get out of there, but it was the biggest waste of money ever.
