Customer of Target no more

Here is the incident:

On April, 12, 2010 I was looking for an arbor (garden arch), as my mother was interested in one. We found one in the garden center at this Target on Nine-Mile Rd. It was on temporary sale for $109. We inquired about purchasing the arbor with the employee Barbara, who was very nice and accommodating. After checking she informed us that they no longer had any in stock. She also checked other stores in the area and found that they all were out of stock with the exception of the floor displays. After thanking her we were ready to leave when she stopped us and asked us if we would like to purchase the floor model. I told that we would be interested but that the arch would not fit in our car in its assembled state. If someone could disassemble it for use we would love to buy it right then and there. She told us she could have it disassembled but after calling for someone, she was told that all the associates were busy unloading a truck and could not do it anytime soon. So Barbara suggested that we give her the phone number and that she would call us after it had been assembled so that we could pick it up. We agreed to the arrangement and left. The next day by about 2:30pm we called the garden center to see if it had been dissembled yet and Barbara told us that they were disassembling the arbor at that time and that it we could pick it up in about an hour. So, we arrived in time to pick up the arbor. Barbara was no longer there at this time but the arch was there next to the register waiting for us. We told the cashier that we there to pick up the arch and after confirming that it was he proceeded with the sale. The register was charging the item for $119. We informed him that we were purchasing the item yesterday and the price was $109. He checked something and then eventually called the departmental manager. The manager checked into it and told us that it was probably on temporary sale (which I confirmed to him) and that the sale had ended the day before. We explained to him that we were there the day before to purchase the item and were ready to do so on that day, but that they had no one to disassemble the item. All he kept doing is reiterating that the sale ended the day before and that there was nothing he could do. So, we argued back and forth about it since the fact that we could not have the item the day before was not within our control, we would have had it the day prior if they would have dissembled it. He stated that they don’t dissemble items for customers and that was being done as a courtesy. My point was that we didn’t ask them to dissemble the item for us; they offered to have it done. Either way, regardless of the fact that they were out of stock, or the fact that they could not dissemble the item on the sale date; neither was within our control or our fault. I don’t feel we should have to pay an extra $10 due to their inefficiency to maintain stock, or follow through on their offer, even if just on principle alone. I consider it to be akin to a “Bait-and-switch” for Target to jack the price up when we come to pick it up. Needless to say we did not purchase the arch and I am no longer a customer of Target.

Everything is very clean in the store and I like shopping there for the most part, but I feel that there customer service could use some improvement.
