Safewalk is designed with a half inch galvanized wire rope that runs the length of the truck and van. Steps provide easy access to the top of the van. A smaller retractable lifeline made of stainless steel travels on a pulley from the front to the rear of the system. A set of steps provides easy access to the top of the van. The lifeline is attached with a hook to a safety harness worn by the driver. Should a driver stumble, a brake on the lifeline will apply in less than a second, stopping the cable, holding the driver, and preventing a fall that could paralyze or kill. It looks simple, but it took over five years of research and development to design Safewalk. Guy Shavender, of Guy Shavender Trucking, Inc knows only too well the dangers of working on top of a van. He estimated his drivers are on top of their vans over four hundred times each day. He knew there had to be a safer way to get the job done. Shavender trucking operates 125 company and contract trucks. I have seen what a fall can do. I have watched the development of Safewalk, and I know it will prevent injuries and save lives. Safewalk is built by Pungo Machine in Pantego, North Carolina. Having been in business since 1954 Pungo Machine has the experience and knowledge needed to design and build a specialized piece of safety equipment like Safewalk You know a company by the company they keep. Some of Pungo Machine's customers include John Deere, Gregory Poole, R. W. Moore, Mitchell Distributing, Standard Equipment Company. Mike Ahearn of Pungo Machine talked about the quality of work that goes into each Safewalk. We custom build each Safewalk to the engineers certified drawings, using only the highest quality materials. A 37 construction steel, schedule 40 pipe, and each Safewalk is hot dip galvanized. No matter what size mill you operate, you and your drivers need a Safewalk for loading and unloading. A Safewalk can be installed on a level asphalt, concrete, or gravel surface. Once you have the surface prepared and the Safewalk has been delivered installation takes about two days. Pungo Machine provides installation service or you can install it yourself using the easy to follow instructions. A frequently asked question is how long does it take a driver to cover or uncover their van when they use Safewalk? It seems for most drivers the use of Safewalk does not increase the time necessary to complete this job, there are even some drivers who can now complete this task in less time because they feel more comfortable and safe as they move about on top of their van. The maximum weight for a driver who can use Safewalk is 310 pounds. The standard one size fits all harness is so comfortable some drivers wear it all the time. Both the standard and custom made harnesses are also available from Pungo Machine. Safewalk is perfect for the job, it has been well thought out and it is designed to work with any type of van The driver has compete freedom to move around.
