His current research has been the interaction of the immune and allergic system with the neurologic system resulting in autoimmune neurologic damage. This damage can present as Depression, Anxiety, OCD, Schizophrenia, Chronic Fatigue (systemic exertion intolerance disease), and Fibromyalgia. He has championed the idea that the human microbiome (the body’s interaction with microbiologic agents) conditions and balances the patient’s immunity to microbes and poisons, and thus regulates autoimmune responses that can affect the central nervous system (CNS). Microbes, both invaders (pathogenic) and normal flora (commensal), can induce autoantibodies that bind to the brain and affect behavior in susceptible patients. Interventions that correct the microbial balance or diminish autoantibody binding may be effective in diverse neuropsychiatric conditions mediated by autoimmunity. He is dedicated to his patients and is passionate in the use of current concepts to affect real improvements in their outcomes.

Dr. Lei is also well versed in working with patient’s suffering with food allergy and conducts food testing with challenges, allergic rhinitis, asthma, urticaria (hives), chronic sinusitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, medication allergy, immune system disorders, and angioedema (swelling). She treats patients with Xolair, Nucala, Fasenra, Dupixent and is very familiar with the new biologics coming to market.

As different groups of human subjects were placed on either a fat-restricted or carbohydrate-restricted diet, their abundance of Bacteriodetes increased as their body weight decreased, transitioning from the signature ‘obese’ microbial community to a ‘lean’ community. Gina joined the Asthma and Allergy Center team in early 2015 and enjoys working with all the doctors. Currently Gina has been collaborating with Dr. Sharon to taking care of the PAN/PANDAS patients and community as a whole. She believes providing a collaborative approach to patient care alongside with patient education, clear communication, and compassionate care the best clinical outcome for her patients is the result.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal ailments among those seeking health care for gastrointestinal disorders. Despite its prevalence, IBS pathophysiology or cause is poorly understood. Hopefully education about this disease will lead to new possible therapeutic targets. In the past decade, there has been increasing focus on the possible connection between increased intestinal mucosal permeability, inflammation, and visceral hypersensitivity. We see increased permeability in subsets of IBS patients. The objectives of this article is to help summarize the role of the healthy intestinal epithelium as a barrier between the lumen and the rest of the body with a focus on tight junctions; to examine the lines of evidence that suggest that different triggers lead to increased intestinal mucosal permeability and disruption of tight junctions in IBS patients; and to explore how this increased permeability may elicit immune responses that affect afferent nerves, resulting in the pain associated with IBS.

Eczema
The allergic triad-Eczema-Rhinitis-Asthma. Eczema is that red, scaling, itchy rash that likes to develop in the skin folds of the elbow or knees or the sides of the face in infants. about 18% of the US population suffers from eczema. Allergic Rhinitis or Hay Fever affects almost 50% of all children, It is familiar to all of us with its sneezy, itchy, runny nose, and itchy watery eyes. patients often under appreciate it’s ability to cause feelings of depression, fatigue, poor sleep quality, and poor job or school performance. Asthma can be a lifelong problem in those children who wheeze thru high school. The chronic inflammation of the lungs can lead to permanent damage similar to smoking and ultimately lead to emphysema if not treated.

It consists of microbes that are both helpful and potentially harmful.”
Lesions
This is defined as hive occurring almost for greater than six weeks. The patients need to tell us if individual lesions can last longer than 24 hours, are tender to touch, or lead to bruising as that may mean the patient has a more serious illness such as vasculitis. We now know that 50% of chronic hive patients actually have an autoimmune reaction to their own allergic system. This is similar to auto immunity in SLE or RA but it doesn’t involve inflamed joints just inflamed skin.

This is a common problem in the allergist office. We look for drug allergy such as an antibiotic. We question all patients about drugs like Aspirin as that commonly causes allergic reactions in the skin and most people forget they even take Aspirin a couple of times a week. We treat viral infections of the skin, warts, hives, psoriasis and all sorts of contact allergy like nickel or chemical sensitivity.
