Tips & Advice
What are solar shades?
Solar shades are also known as sunscreens. They are roller shades, made of a single panel instead of many slats, that are specifically made to block glare, UV rays, and strong sunlight. The tightness of a solar shade’s weave determines how much light it allows.
How should blinds fit in a window?
Fitting blinds in a window depends on whether the window is framed in a recess or flush with the wall, and whether there is a protruding sill or not. Blinds for a window in a recess should be inside mounted in the frame, to fall flat against the window and down to the bottom of the frame. Blinds for a window that is closer to flush should be outside mounted, with the headrail extended slightly beyond the width of the window, and the blinds falling to about 2-3 inches below the bottom of the window.
There are many types of window blinds, and oftentimes the term is also used to refer to window shades. Blinds, however, are specifically the window treatments that have many individual slats that tilt either side-to-side or up and down. The different types of blinds are: vertical (long slats that hang from a top track all the way down to the bottom of the window); venetian blinds (horizontally placed slats); mini blinds (positioned the same as Venetian blinds, but much slimmer); micro blinds (a more extreme, micro-height slat); and panel blinds, which have different sections not so much slats.
What are the best blind for large windows?
The best blinds for large windows are suggested to be multiple blinds on a single headrail. This looks like one long blind, but allows for separate raising and lowering of the different blinds. If not multiples, experts suggest blinds with a continuous cord loop lift. It is recommended to use lighter materials for larger blinds, since they tend to bow less and raise/lower more consistently. Finally, automatic or smart blinds are recommended to ensure that the blinds can be shut for privacy at the appropriate time, even if the homeowner isn’t thinking of it.
How to clean pleated window shades?
Clean pleated window shades with regular dustings using a feather duster and vacuuming using the soft brush attachment. You can also spot-clean many shades with a damp sponge. Depending on the shade and its manufacturer instructions, for deep cleanings you might be able to carefully hand-wash blinds with lukewarm water and mild soap. If you are doing this, the recommended way to dry the blinds is a hair dryer on the warm air setting.
Which way should blinds be turned for privacy?
Blinds should be turned slats-down for privacy in most cases, although some people argue for slats-up on the ground floor.
Which types of window blinds are best?
The type of window blind that is best depends on your taste, budget, and location. Take into consideration factors like natural light, where your building is located (i.e. is it private?), your personal style, and the climate. Wood blinds are the highest quality and most expensive. Vinyl blinds are usually the least expensive. However, if the blinds need to be functional, as well as decorative, certain types of vinyl can cost more -- for example, blackout blinds (for bedrooms that get a lot of early-morning natural light) or insulating blinds (in regions that get very cold during certain seasons). Aluminum mini-blinds are an extremely versatile and popular style of blind in the mid-range price category if there are not special conditions, i.e. extreme weather possibilities.
