Teeth Cleaning
When gingivitis starts, the gums become inflamed, tender, and may bleed when brushed or professionally cleaned. In mouths with thin gum, this may lead to recession as gums pull away from the teeth. If the plaque initiated inflammation is deeper and nearer to the bone, white blood cells react to dissolve the waste products from the bacteria and wall off the bone. This creates spaces called pockets in which plaque builds up even faster as it is harder to clean, as it can’t easily be removed by brushing, flossing, or a dental cleaning. When these soft deposits harden and become calculus (tartar), scaling and root planing becomes necessary in order to reverse the progress of the gum disease and prevent the ensuing loss of tooth and bone.

Dentists also are a great first step for pediatric dentistry, as kids are more likely to see dentists much more often than they are periodontists. Lastly, some dentists specialize in certain cosmetic procedures, including veneers and tooth whitening, among other things.
Crowns
Crown lengthening is a common procedure that’s often performed to improve the health of the teeth and gum tissue, especially before a new crown is placed. Occasionally, crown lengthening is also done to correct what’s commonly referred to as a “gummy smile”, meaning that there’s a disproportionate amount of gum tissue covering the teeth. If crown lengthening has been recommended, you probably have questions about the procedure. We’d like to take this opportunity to discuss crown lengthening in more detail.
Bridges
The most common alternative is a tooth-supported fixed bridge. This procedure involves grinding away health tooth structure on adjacent teeth to support a bridge that will span the location of the missing tooth. A resin-bonded bridge, or “Maryland Bridge,” works in a similar fashion, but forgoes grinding away healthy teeth and clips onto them instead. Removable partial dentures are another alternative.

Root Canal Treatment
Considering most people have been to the dentist a number of times over the course of their lives, the list of reasons to attend one probably will not come as much of a surprise. Obviously dental hygienists are responsible for cleanings and basic checkups that include procedures like x-rays, polishing, and fluoride application. Dentists also are skilled at doing all manners of tooth repairs, which can include everything from filling cavities to performing root canals. They also can apply crowns or bridges, perform standard tooth extractions, and even some non-surgical periodontal care.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Crown lengthening may require revision of soft tissue only or require revision of soft tissue and bone. Gingivectomy/ gingivoplasty is a tried and tested way to remedy a gummy smile. It involves removing excess gum tissue to expose the desired amount of tooth underneath the gum. Crown lengthening is a routine periodontal surgery procedure that involves revising the hard and soft tissue adjacent to the tooth. In addition to being used to revise and improve a gummy smile, it often precedes other dental procedures such as placing a bridge or crown. In these cases, in addition to gum removal, the crown lengthening may involve removing bone close to the roots of the teeth.

Deep Cleaning
Scaling and root planing is a two-stage process where the root surface below the gumline is subject to a deep cleaning to remove inflammatory and bacterial deposits that adhere to the root and to smooth (plane) off the root surface to close holes left in the root due to the loss of ligament that attached the bone and gum to the tooth. This allows the skin lining to adhere to the treated root surface in order to treat gum disease, which is caused by plaque. This sticky accumulation of saliva and bacteria is constantly forming on a person’s teeth. Plaque can be easily controlled and removed through regular brushing and flossing. However, improper brushing and not flossing your teeth could lead to excess plaque accumulation, which in turn could lead to the growth of the special kinds of bacteria that can cause gum disease- gingivitis or periodontitis.

Everybody knows the story about George Washington’s wooden dentures, which in truth actually were not made from wood but a combination of hippopotamus ivory and human teeth. Either way, if that sort of replacement does not sound all that desirable to modern dental patients in need of a tooth replacement, rejoice at the innovation of dental implants.

Oral Surgery
A key factor of successful oral surgery is a clear and accurate view of what’s going on inside the patient’s mouth. Whether you’ve come in for bleeding gums or persistent bad breath, your periodontist will need the ability to look further into the problem. X-ray (or radiograph) technology has been used for years to give dental professionals a glimpse into the inner workings of their patients’ teeth and gums.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Osseous Surgery
One type of oral surgery used to combat periodontal disease is “osseous surgery” During this process, the periodontist will lift the gums back in order to more thoroughly remove the tartar. Following the procedure, the gums are sutured back to their original position, allowing them to heal more closely to the tooth. If extensive damage has been done to the bone and tissues, further oral surgery is needed. Bone and tissue grafts promote new growth in areas of the mouth where bone and gum tissue loss has occurred. In both bone and tissue grafts, either natural or synthetic tissues are used to cover damaged areas and stimulate regrowth.
Tooth Extractions
Most of us are concerned with taking proper care of our teeth so that our teeth will stay firmly in our mouths for our lifetime. But on occasion, a tooth fails and has to be extracted to eliminate or prevent pain and infection. Here’s what you can expect from us if we are involved with a tooth extraction of one of your teeth.
Ridge Augmentation
Alveolar Ridge augmentation is an esthetic oral surgery used to fill in this defect, recapturing the natural contour of the gums and jaw. A new, natural-looking, easy-to-clean tooth can then be implanted.
Bone Grafting
If a patient has tender, swollen or bleeding gums, there is a good chance that they have some sort of gum disease and should be referred to a periodontist for more specialized treatment. A periodontist will focus on deep pocket cleanings to help ebb some of that periodontal disease, but they also can perform bone grafting, soft tissue removal, root planning, and hard tissue recontouring. In other words, any significant problem with the soft tissue and bone in the mouth is likely to be addressed by a periodontist, as their education and experience gears much more toward those areas than a standard dentist.

Orthodontics
Lastly, the gummy smile may be due to the upper jaw projecting too far forward. This is a skeletal defect that requires orthodontics to reposition the teeth and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to reset the jaw into a more ‘retruded’ position.
Braces
Other reasons can be found in the early stages of a tooth’s life. If baby teeth fail to fall out in time for permanent tooth eruption, discomfort and other problems can arise. Additionally, some people are born with “extra” teeth that hinder the proper growth and eruption of the other teeth around them. This is especially important if space needs to be made for the movement of teeth caused by braces.

Teeth Whitening
It would be easy to think that any doctor working on teeth is, essentially, a dentist, but that is not necessarily the case. Dentists go to great lengths to keep patients’ teeth clean and free of plaque, while also performing routine fillings and cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening.
