Although warts may occasionally resolve on their own, it is beneficial to seek attention from a foot and ankle specialist as it is clinically difficult to distinguish warts from calluses. Conservative treatments for warts include shaving of the overlying callus tissue by the specialist as well as various topical treatments, cryotherapy (freezing) or surgical removal in severe cases. If the wart is untreated, it may spread and cause surrounding satellite warts.

Emergency Care
Open sores that occur on the bottom of the foot are often due to structural deformities of the foot that cause excessive pressure or friction in certain areas. These increased areas of pressure make the area prone to skin breakdown. If a wound occurs on the foot, it is important to seek medical attention immediately as these wounds carry high risk of infection and complications. If the foot becomes red, hot or swollen or you experiences nausea, vomiting, fevers or chills, you should present to the nearest emergency room as soon as possible for immediate evaluation.

Ultrasound
Unlike a typical injection that is done for pain relief, these injections do not immediately remove pain. However, because the goal of PRP therapy is to actually heal you, the results are usually long term, often permanent. Initial improvement may be seen within a few weeks, gradually increasing as the healing progresses. Research studies and clinical practice have shown PRP therapy to be very effective at relieving pain and returning patients to their normal lives. Both ultrasound and MRI images have shown definitive tissue repair after PRP therapy, confirming the healing process. The need for surgery can also be greatly reduced by treating injured tissues before the damage progresses and the condition is irreversible
MRI
Diagnosis of Achilles tendinitis requires clinical evaluation by the foot and anke specialist. Imaging such as x-rays, ultrasound or MRI may be necessary to further assess the extent of the condition. Conservative treatment may include immobilization using a special walking boot or a cast, shoe modifications, oral medications or physical therapy. If the condition persists, surgical intervention may be necessary. The best appropriate treatment will be determined by your podiatric foot and ankle surgeon.

Wounds are open sores that can arise for a variety of reasons. Wounds may occur as a result of decreased sensation to the feet due to conditions such as diabetes, neurologic disorders or exposure to toxins or chemotherapy. Wounds can also occur due to disease processes such as venous insufficiency that causes excessive swelling in the legs. When the excess fluid does not have the appropriate mechanism to be circulated and expelled, it may cause open wounds with significant drainage.

Bunions
Bunions are often caused by biomechanical and structural abnormalities of the foot. Certain foot types can be inherited and make the foot prone to developing a bunion. This leads to a progressive deformity as the bones become increasingly angulated. This causes the big toe to gradually lean towards the second toe, causing a prominent bump on the outside of the foot. Although this prominence can remain asymptomatic, it may become aggravated and painful with tight shoes or high heels.

Corns
Conservative treatment includes special types of padding to decrease pressure to the prominent areas. Corns and calluses associated with the hammertoes should be regularly trimmed by the foot and ankle specialist to prevent worsening pain or complications. Often, the hammertoe deformity can be managed with conservative treatment while it remains flexible. However, as the condition progresses, the toe may become more rigid which may require surgical treatment to correct the underlying deformity.
Calluses
Inspect your feet every day. Look for blisters, open sores, calluses or bleeding. Check between your toes to make sure they are clean and dry. If you have difficulty bending over to inspect the bottoms of the feet, it may be helpful to use a handheld mirror for inspection. Call your podiatric surgeon immediately if you notice any of the above changes to your feet.
Fungus
Athlete’s foot is a common skin infection caused by fungus of the foot. This condition can cause dry scaling skin that may cause itching or burning sensations. The fungal infection can be contracted from affected surfaces or moist environments such as public showers or locker rooms. Many different skin conditions can present in a similar way but require different treatment, so a skin biopsy may be required to determine the correct diagnosis through special testing.
Lesions
Warts are small growths of skin that are caused by an underlying virus. Warts can appear anywhere on the foot but are most commonly located on the bottom of the foot. It may appear as a single lesion or a cluster of lesions.

Physical Therapy
Conservative treatment may include oral medications, orthotics, padding, corticosteroid injections, or physical therapy. If the pain is not relieved with the above measures, surgical intervention may be required. Surgery addresses the arthritic changes within the joint and any surrounding bony spurs that may develop over time.

Ankle sprains are often caused by a fall or twist that causes an unnatural rotation and injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, there may be damage to the ligaments surrounding the ankle or may result in a break of one of the surrounding bones. Immediately after an ankle sprain you will likely experience pain, swelling and possibly bruising. You may have increased pain with walking or putting any pressure on the area. If you have had an ankle sprain, contact your podiatrist immediately for full evaluation and treatment. In the meantime, use “RICE” to help reduce pain and swelling: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Fungus Toenails
Toenail fungus (onychomycosis, tinea unguium) is a fungal infection of the nail and underlying nail bed. Fungus can be easily contracted from the environment such as public showers or swimming pools, moist feet, or humid environments. Risk factors may include aging, compromised immune system, diabetes or circulation disorders which may slow the growth of the nail and compromise the overall nail health.

Heel Pain
Ingrown Toenails
An untreated ingrown toenail may cause severe pain and discomfort, especially in tight shoes that apply pressure to the affected area. In early stages, warm water soaks with Epsom salt may help decrease the inflammation in the area. However, without removing the offending nail border, the condition will not resolve and may eventually lead to infection.
Plantar Fasciitis
Conservative treatment for plantar fasciitis begins with stretching exercises, icing, and modifications in shoe gear. If the pain does not resolve, your podiatrist may treat with taping and padding, custom orthotics, corticosteroid injections, shockwave treatment, night splints or physical therapy. These are all conservative treatments that are targeted to relieve the pain associated with plantar fasciitis. If conservative treatments do not relieve the pain, surgical intervention may be required.
