Porter Veterinary Center offers dental cleaning under anesthesia, which allows us to safely and thoroughly clean the teeth under the gum line to prevent tartar from building up on teeth. To maintain your pet’s oral health between cleanings, we recommend that you brush their teeth daily, as this is the best way to prevent dental disease. We also recommend preventative chews and water additives, which can also be used to prevent tartar build up.

Behavioral Counseling

Comprehensive Examination
The Registered Veterinary Technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia as well as client education, marketing and inventory maintenance. The technician assists in exam rooms by taking patients’ histories, vital signs and weight; preparing vaccines; collecting samples and running diagnostic tests; providing client education; and assisting with animal restraint. Technicians also may see their own appointments for procedures such as suture removal; nail trim, vaccine administration when a doctor exam is not required, long-term medication monitoring testing, surgery admission and discharge.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Fleas and ticks are more than just pesky insects. Did you know they can also cause a number of health problems for pets, including Lyme disease, allergies, and ehrlichiosisis? To protect your pet from parasitic diseases, it’s best to keep them on a flea-and-tick medication all year round.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Sometimes known as feline distemper, this disease is caused by a virus so resistant, it can survive up to one year outside a cat’s body! Therefore, as most cats will be exposed to it during their lifetimes and infection rates in unprotected cats can run as high as 90% to 100%, vaccination against this potentially fatal disease is absolutely essential. Symptoms can include listlessness, diarrhea, vomiting, severe dehydration, fever and death. Happily, the vaccine itself is very effective in preventing the disease, as treatment is very difficult.

Some viral and bacterial infections, for example, can result in an inflammation of the pink membrane on the inside of the eyelids and around the eye. Generally called conjunctivitis, sometimes this infection can lead to disease of the cornea. The same infection can make the nose, lungs, and tongue inflamed.

Max & I love Dr. Newman….the staff (especilly Annie!) and Dr. are the best that I’ve met since we’ve had Max. It’s difficult to find a Dr. that your dog loves to visit. Dr. Newman will get down to the floor and he will inspect every inch. Took Max in for an ear infection and Dr. Newman was the 1st Dr. that I’ve ever met to put his nose in his ear. Since that day Max and I fell in love with him. Dr. Newman is kind, friendy, and knowlledgeable. I love the fact that he will play with Max and give him attention. Max is an only child and LOVES all the attention on him. I’ve seen other Dr. and they’ll just ignore the pet, NOT Dr. Newman! Thank you for all your help with Max

Arthritis Treatment
A dog with arthritis pain from an old cruciate rupture may still benefit from a TPLO surgery and possibly from the TTA. Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Class IV laser therapy is a non-invasive, drug- and surgery-free therapy option that uses laser energy for pain management and the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. It can also be used to reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to accelerate the healing process for a number of conditions. These include muscle and joint pain, arthritis symptoms, and muscle spasms.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Blood Test: Senior pets (age 7 and up), we recommend annual blood screenings to test for conditions like liver or kidney disease. We may recommend a blood test more often, depending on your pet’s lifestyle, current medications, or illnesses that your pet may have.

Wound and Fracture Care
Exotic animals are uniquely individual between species. The anesthetic medications that can be used in one exotic species may not be fit for another species. Our doctors and trained staff have the knowledge to make anesthesia as stress free and safe as possible for your exotic pet. Although there is no such thing as 0% risk when an animal is put under general anesthesia, our team makes your animal’s safety our number one priority. Each patient is monitored closely while under general anesthesia. We have the ability to monitor heart rate and rhythm, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure, along with other vital signs that give us important information to ensure your pet has as safe of an anesthetic event as possible. We are able to perform a variety of surgical procedures on exotic animals. We can perform spaying and neutering of many exotic pets in our hospital, as well as laceration repairs, biopsies, and other surgical procedures on larger exotic animals, many times in the field. So whether you have a sugar glider that needs to be spayed, or a giraffe that needs a tumor removed, our exotics team is ready to help with your exotic healthcare.

Laboratory Services
