Jims Discount Tire & Brake
101 Armour Rd, North Kansas City, MO 64116
If there was an option for no stars i would have picked it. I went in to get two new front tires put on sometime in june it is now october and only 20000 miles later on 60000 mile tires and they are worn so bad the belt is showing on one and almost the other. So I went back to have them replace those tires on warranty and all they did was give me the run around and acted like I was stupid. The fat rude woman at the front desk kept asking for proof of when i got an alignment and trying to bs me and after I went and got proof by going to firestone and getting a copy of the reciept they said I would have to take it up with the manufacturer only because they don't want to honor their warranty. In the end I found out they never balanced them which is part of the job thats why they call it mount and balance. They are not a trustworthy business I will never go back or recommend them to anyone. If you want good tires at a decent price and a warranty with no hassle go to walmart and get some good year tires.
After leaving work tonight, I noticed my car was pulling really hard to the left, and was making a "thumping" nose. Sure enough, my tire was completely flat. I stopped at Northtown Automotive, they were about to close and could not fix the flat however , they did air up the tire, and recommended I drive to Goodyear on Swift Ave. They too were about to close and couldn't fix the tire . I was then told to try Jim's Discount Tires on Armour.
I drove to Jim's and my heart sank when I saw their closing time was 5:00 pm-it was now 5:05. I went into the store, explained my problem to them, and even though they were "closed", not one, but two gentlemen took the tire off, and checked the tire for the source of the flat. The crazy part was, they could not find a hole and after checking and re-checking for about 20 minutes, checked the other three tires, and sent me on my way. I was told to come back in the morning if it went flat again, and they would give me a ride to work!
These people went above and beyond to help me out, seemed really concerned, and would take no payment for their trouble!
Thank you Jim's Discount Tires, you have a new customer, and I can't tell you enough how much it meant to me that you stayed to take care of me after being turned away twice before. Chivalry is not dead after all!
I am new to NKC and had some rather serious tire and front end alignment issues. I knew they were there but not nearly as bad as they turned out to be. So, by pressing and immediate necessity moreso than desire, I reluctantly took my car to Jim's after learning of their shop right here in NKC on Armour, and driven by there so many times for the 2+ years even prior to living in NKC. In fact, they are so close I can even walk there to leave or pick up my car. That's nice!
Long story short: the two front balljoints and pitman arm assembly as well as tires had to be replaced, right then. Despite my current financial situation with a move just two weeks prior and other pressing expenses I was dealing with, we came up with a game plan of attack, prioritized as I could not do it all at once financially, and they not only did excellent work above and beyond what I expected, but Jim and his staff, especially Nannette, proved that there still is something in this day and age called "customer service and care."
I have found my car place now, and they will be my #1 in helping me maintain and take care of my 2001 Blazer, which is still going strong and looking pretty darn good for its age. But then again, when you try taking care of thigns, that will help them last longer as well.
Very good people, very straightforward honesty and very good work ethic. You cannot go wrong with Jim's and his staff!
Thank you Jim, Nanette and staff - I will definitely see you soon for "phase 2" and the tires we spoke of.
My first visit Jim's, found them through Google! Overall was an excellent experience. Major clutch and other work done on my Mini on short notice over 2 days. Work had to be completed because we were taking a long trip immediately after the repair work. I asked them to do a thorough road test after the work to make sure no surprises on the road. Happy to report after the trip that the car worked perfectly, and the overall experience with Jim's Discount Tire & Brake was wonderful. Highly recommend.
Don't ever use Jims discount tire and brake service.
Today I tried to have Jims discount tire and brake service install a set of 24" tires on a set of wheels and them put them on my truck. After getting no help unloading the tires they had an employee help unload my wheels. He dropped the first one about 6 inches from the ground, which made me pause out of concern. I moved the second wheel myself. He then tossed the third box with a wheel in it straight to the ground. He damaged my wheel in the process. I figured the guy was having a bad day and didn't report it to his manager or the owner at the time because I was being nice and didn't know it damaged the wheel. 2 hours later they proceed to tell me that low and behold one of the wheels is not straight and true. They say it must have been damaged during shipping. I then try to explain to them how their guy just tossed the wheel in the box. The lady who works the desk was not in the garage at the time, yet she was confident and adamant that she knew what happened. She didn't let me explain anything before getting very testy with me. I then told her, she needs to let me speak. She doesn't know what happened because she was not there. Her explanation makes no sense as she was trying to tell me where the wheel hit when her employee tossed it... It was in a box and landed awkwardly. You can not see in the box to know exactly where the wheel hit. After all of this they kicked my truck out and actually refused to refund me the money I had paid upfront for them to mount the wheels on the truck. They must need the 10 dollars more than I can imagine. They then threaten to call my boss because they know where I work. These people are scum. If you don't buy your wheels from them they will attempt to damage yours, to make you purchase them through them. The lady behind the counter was nice enough to offer to throw away my original 24" wheels that were almost brand new..... Obviously she knows they are worth a couple thousand dollars and she wouldn't be throwing them away, she would sell them.
I am the last person on earth to believe that something is truly as good as everyone says it is. Jims Discount Tire & Brake is the exception. In fact, my experience there last week was even better than expected. Every positive statement in every review you will read here is absolutely true and they will have my business for as long as they stay in business. Three thumbs up.
This is a great family owned business. I originally was referred there by a friend and it was close by to where I was working. I called to see when I could bring the car in to have a rattling noise and brakes fixed and she told me to bring it in the next day. I brought it in the next afternoon and it was fixed on the spot. I was able to wait in the air conditioned lobby and it was ready to drive in about 2 hours. Very friendly service and very affordable prices.
I have been back to have my air conditioning fixed and again have had great service. I had a leak which I have been back 3 times for, but have only been charged one time, which I thought was very accommodating. Great job Jim's Tire & Brake!
Walked in here after I was recommended by a friend. I had a nail in one of my tires and needed a patch. It was pretty busy when I got there, yet they got my tire patched and I was out of there within 15 minutes and they only charged me $12! Needless to say that after the service department at my dealer wanted to charge me $30 for doing this same task, I was very happy to have it done for less than half the price and probably half the time.
Great job Jim's Discount Tire & Brakes, you just gained a new customer and a good recommendation from me!
I was receiving a "check engine" error that had been "fixed" by one shop, looked at by two others (including the dealership!), each with a different opinion on what needed fixed ranging in the hundreds to over a 1K to fix. Jim's Discount Tire & Brake found the RIGHT problem, and fixed it for less than $100 all in less time it took for others to even run diagnostics.
Jim is honest, open, and he even waited past closing time for me to arrive to pick up my car one day when I was running late (thanks again Jim)! I drive out of my way to come to his shop and he's one of the easiest and nicest people to work with.
This Shop is Great!!! I would recommend this shop to any and everyone that needs service. This shop is VERY fair when it comes to costs. They will not tell you somethings needs repaired unless it realy does need repaired. I went to a dealership that told me I needed over $1000 worth of work and when I took it here they showed me I did NOT need that work done. They will not try to fast talk women because they know sometimes we have no clue whats going on with our vehicles. They are always very prompt when serving vehicles. If you need it fixed that day it will be fixed that day. My husband and I take both our vehicles to them and will never use another shop for anything ever again. I was one of those people who would use Car X and shops like that before. NEVER AGAIN.

Note that this review was after my first visit, and it was only for an inspection. It's great to see people's reviews here who've been going to Jim's Discount Tire & Brake for 10+ years because really, the test of a good auto shop is whether they give you consistently good service and prices for a number of different types of repairs.
However, my experience was stellar. Like other's have set, it's in a difficult spot to pull up - you have to park on the street if there's a space, but if not I recommend double parking in front of their white garage door (assuming someone else isn't already there) and going in to check in. They'll let you know what to do.
I did just that, and they said they would be done with someone else in about two minutes and if I went to sit in my car they'll pull me in. That's exactly what happened! The Staff was super super friendly (and even called me ""MIss"" - not ""Ma'm!"" Woohoo!) and helpful and I was in and out of there lickety split (about 10 minutes - probably would have been quicker if they hadn't had to replace two of my brake lights that were out). As I waited I consulted with them about a dealer-based maintenance plan I'd been doing for the first 6 years of car's life and was thinking about switching to a local plan. They were super honest and nice, and went through everything really clearly with me.
For inspections and they are first come first served Monday through Friday 7am-5pm and Saturdays from 8:30am to 1:30pm. However, because I needed the lights replaced which was an additional $20, they offered to put the whole thing on a credit card for me.
Thanks Jim's Discount Tire & Brake! You've grabbed yourself another customer :)

I just opened this account specifically to give Jim's Discount Tire & Brake a great review. After my experience with Jim's, I completely understand why they have a perfect rating everywhere. Before going to Jim's, I had taken my car to two other mechanics who had seemingly misdiagnosed, tried to charge me for extras that weren't necessary, or included services completely unrelated to the problem in their estimate. Anyway, after researching auto repair shops in Kansas City, I came across Jim's Discount Tire & Brake. I called them at around 2:30 on a Friday. The owner was very friendly and told me to bring it on in. I dropped off my car, explained the problem and headed back home. About 20 minutes later I received a call from Jim who gave a detailed explanation of the problem with my car. He explained every possible option, the price for each option including exactly how much labor would cost. He did not try to persuade me to do anything extra, etc. He just identified the problem, gave me the cost, and fixed the problem without trying to add any BS. I ended up paying a little less than I was quoted, and he showed me all of the parts that were replaced (without me requesting.) In addition, I ended up paying $1,000 less than one mechanic had quoted me. Best experience ever at an auto repair shop and maybe even any business. Jim's Discount Tire & Brake are honest, personable, and a stress free experience. I only wish more businesses were run like them!!
My 1990 Honda Civic had a tune-up and the car ran better than ever - I could tell the difference...and then I needed a new starter and alternator - the car was starting intermittently. They showed me how they diagnosed it and fixed it while I waited....(It's not like they didn't have other business, either.).. I used their wifi to work on my laptop while I waited. Plus the guys in the garage sing while they work - an added bonus. A nice place with nice people.
I came across with Jim's Discount Tire & Brake, because a friend of mine referred me to, even though they were very busy ,they made time to take care of my car from front end problems. The job was done fast but right. The price is accurate, and most important, effective with hassle free results. I asked questions and got right answers. I strongly recommend to people looking for a professional and knowledgeable repair shop that will not take you for a ride. Thanks guys.
that I had a great experience at this shop! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They put me right at ease and made my tire buying experience really fun & actually exciting! With the weather we can have in Missouri, tires are really important to me.
Nannette, Clint and Michael (including the technician) were all involved in the proces and seemed like they really cared about me, my vehicle and how my vehicle could respond to different things on the road as I have a little one.
They dropped me off & picked me up from work, they just made it all so easy.
I have to say it's too bad a few reviews before this were so negatve & damaging. Interesting that they were all made on the same day? Possibly by one person who is angry and wants to damage Discout's rep. I am sorry they did not have the same amazing experience I did. I think comparing Discount Tire to Walmart is like comparing a Lexus with a Pinto.
All that aside though, I would recommend Discount Tire & Brake to any of my friends, family or neighbors. In fact I already do!
