Corns
A corn is a thickening of the surface layer on the skin. They usually form on the top of toes, tip of toes or even between toes.
Ulcer
The public hears a great deal about orthotics and there are many claims about their value Orthotics can be a useful tool for the treatment of many foot conditions. A true functional (custom-made) orthotic can be formed from a 3D scan of a person’s foot. Orthotic devices are most helpful in correcting pronation and hyperpronation and in helping prevent the formation of painful bunion deformities, hammertoes and neuromas. These foot deformities are the result of continued wear and tear on the feet because of underlying abnormalities. People who suffer pain from heel spurs and plantar fasciitis are often helped dramatically with orthotics as a part of their treatment regimen. Orthotics prove to be very useful in de-weighting an irritated area and thus avoiding ulcer formation. This is critically important in a vascularly impaired or diabetic patient. Of course orthotics are not a cure-all and must be used as a part of a multifaceted treatment plan.
Calluses
Medical devices that are placed inside the shoes for walking and running are referred to as orthotics. They are used to relieve pain from abnormal foot structures, or from having general discomfort while walking. There are several types of orthotics, and choosing the right ones depends on the condition they will be correcting. Patients who have corns and calluses may benefit from wearing epidermal insoles, which can be successful in removing pressure from the affected parts of the foot. People who desire to have a balanced distribution of weight on the feet may opt to wear comfort insoles that can absorb shock. Orthopedic insoles that are made of one piece may help patients that have flat feet, or additional specific types of deformities. If you have foot pain, and are interested in learning more about orthotics, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can determine which type is correct for you.
Fungus
Treatments for this condition include topical medications, systemic medications which can cause liver and or kidney damage and now laser treatment. The lasers are aimed at the fungus in the toenail and basically vaporize it while leaving the adjacent skin unharmed. The newest technology is the utilization of a cool laser and no anesthesia is necessary. Patients can return to everyday activities immediately after treatment. Most patients are able to grow out a regular appearing nail after just one laser treatment. As the nail grows out the healthy nail replaces the infected toenail. The positive is that studies have shown the laser to have absolutely no side effects while being effective in eradicating the fungal infection. In some cases the laser treatment has to be repeated to completely destroy the fungus which is why it is necessary for your foot care specialist to follow your progress after treatment.

Removing the entire nail plate increases the likelihood that the nail will grow back deformed. At Livingston Foot Care Specialists we are very aware of the importance of the cosmetic result. Unless the ingrown nail is congenital, the best way to prevent ingrown toenails is to protect the feet from trauma and to wear shoes and socks with adequate room for the toes. Nails should be cut straight across with a clean, sharp nail trimmer without tapering or rounding the corners. Trim the nails no shorter than the edge of the toe.

Orthotics do have their limitations and certainly are not a panacea for all foot pathology. Once a deformity such as a bunion or hammertoe has developed, the orthotic device can only help reduce irritation and relieve some weight-bearing stress on the deformity. No orthotic can cure a bunion or hammertoe. Only surgical intervention can cure a bunion. Over-the-counter orthotics provide padding and cushioning but unless the devices are custom-made they have little value in preventing the formation of serious foot deformities and can be harmful to the diabetic whose foot care is of paramount importance. Without proper biomechanical control, athletes can develop knee and back problems from over-the-counter devices.
