Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) commonly affects peripheral joints, but can also impact the neck vertebrae, which can lead to back pain. A person can lower discomfort with medical treatment, exercise, and other home remedies.
Fibromyalgia
A tingling, or pins and needles, sensation in the back can result from conditions that affect the underlying nerves. Doctors refer to this sensation as paresthesia. Causes can include infections, spinal injuries, fibromyalgia, and vascular malformations.
Primary Care
Research studies have repeatedly shown that ultrasound guided injections are more accurate and much less painful than unguided or “blind” injections that are commonly done in orthopedist and primary care practices. Dr. Patel attended and received his medical degree from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. He did his internship in Internal Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital. He then completed his primary residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School/JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, where he also served as a Chief Resident. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Dr. Delport performs a wide variety of ultrasound guided procedures for various musculoskeletal disorders. This includes ultrasound guided intra-articular injections, peri-tendinous and intra-sheath injections, bursal injections and trigger point injections. Additionally, Dr. Delport performs ultrasound guided percutaneous needle fenestration for tendinopathy throughout the upper and lower extremities. Dr. Delport also performs ultrasound guided injection for carpal tunnel syndrome and ultrasound guided carpal tunnel release. Other procedures performed by Dr Delport include needle lavage for calcific tendinosis, joint aspiration, trigger finger injection and release, and soft tissue biopsies. Dr. Delport also performs ultrasound guided platelet rich plasma therapy to treat tendon pathology, including partial tendon tears; and platelet rich plasma injection for joint problems such as osteoarthritis.

Dr. Patel’s clinical focus includes nonsurgical management of sports and musculoskeletal injuries, as well as chronic degenerative musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Patel evaluates and treats patients with shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot joint-related conditions. He has expertise in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, which is utilized to identify potential sources of pain in real-time. He also has procedural expertise in ultrasound-guided injections, viscosupplementation, platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) therapy, and percutaneous microtenotomy.

Dr. Anton Delport, a subspecialty musculoskeletal radiologist who is fellowship trained in MRI of the spine and all joints in the body, will interpret your study.

Dr. Delport attended the University of Cape Town as an undergraduate and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (1991). In 2006, he completed his Doctor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. His clinical training included a medical internship at Christiana Care Health Services (2006 – 2007). Dr. Delport completed his Radiology Residency (2007 – 2011) and Musculoskeletal Fellowship (2011 – 2012) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Throughout his training, he has authored and co-authored articles in several journals with a focus on musculoskeletal radiology. He is Board Certified in Radiology in both Canada and the United States.

Most people with back problems do not need an MRI or CAT scan. Approximately 30% of normal volunteers without back pain have significant abnormalities on MRI/CT Scan. MRI's or CAT Scans are usually ordered if pain persists or if surgery or injection are being considered
Chemotherapy
If you have a history or a current issue of renal insufficiency, liver disease, diabetes or currently taking medication for diabetes, kidney disease, on dialysis, high blood pressure (Hypertension), gout, chemotherapy, multiple myeloma, on long term anti-inflammatory medication or if you are or over the age of 60, you are required to obtain a blood test prior to your MRI scan if your referring physician ordered your study with contrast or with gadolinium. Please speak to your referring physician.

Sciatica
A recent study from University Hospitals (UH) Connor Whole Health has found that adults who initially visit a chiropractor to receive spinal manipulation for low back pain caused by disc herniation or radiculopathy (i.e., sciatica) are less likely to undergo discectomy (i.e., disc surgery) over the subsequent two years. This study was recently published in the journal BMJ Open.

Medical ultrasound is a diagnostic medical imaging technique used to visualize muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and many internal organs, to capture their size, structure and any pathological lesions with real time images. Ultrasound has been used by radiologists and ultrasound technologists to image the human body for at least 50 years and has become a widely used diagnostic tool. The technology is relatively inexpensive and portable, especially when compared with other techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). As currently applied in the medical field, properly performed ultrasound poses no known risks to the patient. Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation such is with CT and X-Ray, and the power levels used for imaging are too low to cause adverse heating or pressure effects in tissue. Although the long-term effects due to ultrasound exposure at diagnostic intensity are still unknown, currently most doctors feel that the benefits to patients outweigh the risks. The ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle has been advocated for an ultrasound examination – that is, keeping the scanning time and power settings as low as possible but consistent with diagnostic imaging. Dr Delport’s ultrasound practice, which is accredited by the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), strictly follows the ALARA principle.

Dr. Scott T. Roberts attended the University of Illinois as an undergraduate, and then trained at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) and then performed a fellowship in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine at the University of Utah.
Physical Therapy
Superior patient care begins with the physician investing time with each patient, listening, explaining and educating them on the source of their pain with diagnosis and treatment options. The Spine Center emphasizes the most comprehensive and appropriate approach to the treatment of spinal pathology including manual physical therapy, fluoroscopic spine procedures and/or surgery, utilizing the most conservative treatment possible to achieve pain relief. Diagnostic workup includes electrodiagnostic and imaging studies such as MRIs.
Slipped Disc
Another possibility is that the medicine was injected in the correct anatomic location, but that the problem causing your pain, such as a large slipped disc or severe spinal stenosis, is too great to be overcome by a simple injection. When this is the case, the patient will generally experience some very minor pain relief for several days and then the pain will return. When this occurs, it may not be worthwhile to perform any further injections.
