My buddy and I stayed at the Vanderbilt Y. We knew our room would be small but it was still a bit shocking. I could nearly touch opposite walls! It is a good thing we are best friends as you do not have any privacy. It may be awkward for casual acquaintences. After getting our luggage to the room, we both needed to use the bathroom. We found it down two hallways from our room. It was OK for the price we were paying and always clean.
The location is a quiet neighborhood so we didn't hear a lot of traffic like you often do in NY. There were not a lot of great restaurant choices right there but plenty within a ten minute walk.
When we returned to the Y later that evening, I decided to take a shower. There were two showers in separate rooms along the hall. If you are phobic about showering with another guy, use them. I chose the shower in the bathroom. It was convenient to the toilet and mirror. The shower has two showerheads. Just as I had stripped and got under the spray, another guy came in. I am accustomed to showering with other men at my gym but this guy sort of freaked me out when he kept looking me over. I should also say this little shower area was hardly larger than my own shower stall at home so you are in close quarters. I told my friend Jay about it and we decided to shower together from there on out so strangers couldn't join us.
We loved unlimited use of the gym and pool as we are both exercise fanatics. Also sitting in the sauna was nice after walking all day. The showers in the lockeroom are communal so again if you are shy, it isn't for you.
If you are accustomed to fine hotels and that is what you are looking for, this isn't for you. My girlfriend would not handle it well. On the other hand if you are like my friend and I and want to save a few bucks to apply to other adventures when you are in New York, it is a place we would consider again.

This hotel was cheap and convenient, but I had a horrible experience. The maids continuously left my door open, knocked over and broke some personal items, and shouted at me for kindly asking them to discontinue services until we left. The rooms were ultimately tiny and cramped, the bed sheets felt unclean, the bathrooms (in which each floor has one facility), have limited showers with no doors, and jet-lagged kids run around all night until about three o'clock in the morning. The Vanderbilt Hotel made my trip to New York less exciting. Good for a super cheap and carefree vacation, but not for an exciting, relaxing, enjoyable experience.

Best kept secret in New York City. The Vanderbilt Ymca is cheap, clean, secured, centrally located, and great service. You could walk to Grand Central station and Rockafeller Center in a few minutes. We were greeted by a receptionist name Ginnette who was sweet and informative. who check us in at 9 AM. The rooms are clean daily by a sweet woman name Susie. The bathroom on the 10th floor were always clean. The security was 24/7. Thanks Barry for being a friendly security guard. The Vanderbilt had a complete gym with swimming pool and sauna. A great place to relax after long walk around New York City. Book early because they fill up easily. Most of the rooms were filled with students from nearby schools. Stayed for six nights and had the best time in my life. Thanks Vanderbilt Ymca.

This was a friendly hostel. It has a good location and the staff and helpful and friendly. The only downside to it has to be there are not enough bathrooms on each floor for the amount of people per floor. Overall though a value for money place to stay!

I've stayed two times here. Both times I was surprised of the small sizes of the room. Astonishing how they manage to get a tv-set, a bunk bed, a table, a cupboard, and a table in such a small room.
The rooms were clean and the comunal bathroom were allright and adequate.
