Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Zola has been the director of University Animal Hospital since 1989. After earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1978 from the University of Pennsylvania where he was a Dean’s List student, Dr. Zola was accepted to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. After four years of study, he was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1982, giving him over 25 years of quality experience as a general practitioner. Following veterinary school, he was selected for an internship in medicine and surgery at the prestigious Animal Medical Center in New York City. In addition to general medicine, some of Dr. Zola’s professional interests include ophthalmology, internal medicine and pediatrics.

Kitten Care. Keep those adorable antics going with a healthy and protected kitten. During those first important months while you and your kitten bond, it is critical that your kitten receive a series of vaccines and be treated for any intestinal parasites. Use these visits as an opportunity to ask us anything you need to know about your kitten and his or her behavior. Schedule your spay or neuter appointment early.

Pain Management
Pain management is a vital aspect of our pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative anesthetic and medical protocol. All surgical patients, including those undergoing routine procedures such as ovariohysterectomy or neuters, receive pain control medication. If you have any questions about pain management, we urge you to speak with a member of our highly trained medical staff.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Both you and your pet benefit from our large, well-stocked pharmacy. We maintain an inventory of most veterinary pharmaceutical products. If your pet requires medication for heart disease, intestinal problems, skin disorders, or arthritis, we can fill his or her prescription quickly and easily. Our pharmacy is also stocked with the latest flea and tick treatments, heartworm preventatives, and a variety of prescription diets.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis – Recently, this deadly disease has received a lot of attention. We recommend vaccinating all dogs traveling to wetlands and/or wooded areas and all dogs who swim in fresh water. In 2009, an outbreak of Leptospirosis was reported in New York City dogs. We strongly recommend vaccinating your dog against this deadly disease.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Doodle puppies need to begin puppy immunizations when they are around six weeks old. We provide vaccinations that prevent your puppy from distemper, parainfluenza, hepatitis, rabies, parvovirus and a host of other serious canine diseases. UAH strongly urges doodle owners who travel with their dog outside NYC to have their dog vaccinated against Lyme disease due to the large number of ticks living in wooded areas and wetlands. We can also have a once-a-month pill to protect your doodle from heartworm disease that effectively stops flea infestations and parasitic infections responsible for heartworm.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
Our foremost concern is providing your pet with care that helps them avoid harmful diseases or conditions. As a result, we offer a wide range of thorough diagnostic testing, which can detect heartworm disease, Lyme disease, infections, feline leukemia, intestinal parasites, urinary tract infections, and many additional diseases and conditions that can go unnoticed in their early stages. Early blood testing can show evidence of disease such as diabetes, changes in liver or kidney function, or simply provide a baseline for future reference. Diagnostic testing is also included in pre-anesthetic screenings prior to dental or surgical procedures that require general anesthesia. Annual wellness blood and urine tests, along with other diagnostics, assist us in the early detection of diseases and health conditions.

Ultrasound is invaluable for making treatment decisions for various types of heart disease. It also allows us to biopsy organs such as the liver and kidney through a tiny “keyhole” incision. Using the ultrasound image as a guide, surgical biopsies can be obtained without major surgery, and your pet can often go home the same day.

Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental Care. Your dog’s teeth are as critical to his or her health as yours are to you. Tartar buildup and periodontal disease become rampant as pets age. Our dental care program manages that and treats tooth damage. Dental care begins with a full dental evaluation and digital dental radiography, followed by dental work performed while your pet is under anesthesia. Our veterinarians are highly skilled and our hospital is well equipped with all the surgical tools necessary to perform minor and major pet surgical procedures, from spays and neuters to more complicated emergency, orthopedic and soft-tissue surgeries.
Declawing
Spaying and Neutering
Spaying your doodle when she is around six months old greatly reduces your dog’s risk of suffering breast tumors, uterine infections and problems associated with being in heat. Neutering your male doodle minimizes his urge to “mark” his territory and suppresses aggressive and/or roaming tendencies. Also, an older, neutered doodle is less likely to be diagnosed with prostate disease, testicular/anal tumors or perineal hernias.

Dental Radiology
Thorough dental care greatly benefits your pet. The veterinary team at University Animal Hospital utilizes the latest digital dental x-ray technology. This technology has many positive effects on your pet’s dental care. Digital dental x-rays provide a detailed picture of your pet’s mouth, allowing us to diagnose problems that may not be visible during a standard oral exam. Digital dental x-rays allow us to detect problems below the gum line due to bone loss and periodontal disease. University Animal Hospital is one of the only veterinary hospitals on Manhattan’s upper east side – and one of the few in all of New York City – to offer advanced digital radiology.
Microchipping
Each pet microchip has a unique number. This number, along with information about the you and your pet, are added to a national pet registry. Most veterinary hospitals and animal shelters have electronic scanners for detecting and reading these implanted microchips. If your pet is lost, his or her microchip can be scanned, and the information is used to reunite you and your best friend. University Animal Hospital uses the Home Again microchip system.
