Overall
Know your coverage

The receptionists were incorrect in telling me the practice accepts my insurance. I believed them when they said they did, but about a month later I received a bill. I called my insurance company and was told the practice was out-of-network. When I called the office the questions the bill the receptionist told me they did accept the insurance. We argued for a while - she was very rude. When I called back, after she had contacted the insurance company, she realized she was wrong. But I am still responsible for the bill, they tell me. Even though they gave incorrect information, I still have to pay. I would not recommend this dentist to anyone. Almost forgot to mention the dental hygienist works on my teeth for about 5 minutes when a typical cleaning should be much longer.

They also told my wife she needed work done that was going to cost her $600, none of which will be covered by insurance. We went for a second opinion and the new dentist warned us we were being ripped off. Our new dentist did the work, which was completely covered.

Overall
buyer beware...

terrible bedside manner- yes. Shredded gums: yupp. Scare tactics used to get me to have $500 of work NOT covered by my insurance done- got me there too.

I went to Union Sq dental because they took my insurance and were located 1 block from my work. Sure, I was a little suspicious about how well appointed the office was (particularly given the rent they probably pay for the space) and maybe some alarm bells should have gone off. But instead I just thought I was going to get high class treatment.

I was wrong.

I came to the office for an appt after 2 years of not having dental coverage. They told me that though I had no cavities, I had bone loss, gum disease, and that my teeth were going to fall out (btw- I'm 23). All of that was really terrifying, so when they told me I needed $500 worth of Arestin injections, I pushed back a little bit, but folded when it came down to it because hey- I like having my teeth attached to my jaw.

I should have gone for a second opinion. In all I went to the office for 3 visits, and the treatment was consistently hostile. Before my 4th visit I read some reviews online and found that there were some other people who felt scammed by the Arestin push and so I canceled and rescheduled elsewhere. I saw my new dentist last week- she was amazing. She told me *and I quote* "you have beautiful teeth." And while she did say that she could understand why a very pro-Arestin dentist would want to put the medicine in two places in my mouth (a $50 treatment)-- she was taken aback (if not embarrassed) when I said $500 worth of work had been pushed on me by my last dentist.

Sure- the next dentist office I went to wasn't as swanky. But buyer-beware, appearances can be deceiving
