I have a broken fibula and most unfortunately have terrible insurance (better than none, I guess). Dr. Turtel was the only orthopedic specialist in my area who was able to take me within 4 days for my ER follow-up, although I live quite far away, in another part of Brooklyn.
After reviewing only my x-rays and written report from my ER visit 4 days prior (and taking new x-rays in his office), I was told that I would need surgery. ""How is that possible?"" I asked. ""You have no idea of the status of the ligaments. Are you going to do an MRI?"" ""Not necessary. You have to come back and see my colleague Dr. Shur early next week, then he'll schedule surgery for the end of the week."" My response: ""No way do I need surgery for a simple fracture, I'm going for a second opinion.""
Sure enough, after an appointment the following day with another orthopedic specialist (affiliated with the Hospital for Joint Diseases and Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan), I learned that not only do NOT need surgery (which could NEVER have been determined without taking off the hard cast I got at the ER and doing a stress test and/or an MRI—which Dr. Turtel did NOT do), I am already in a removable ""air"" cast just a week after my fracture, on my way to recovery (thanks to the all important second opinion).
My experience leads me to believe that the 5-star reviews here must be fake, and I agree 100% with other reviewers: these people are only interested in operating on you so they can make money (unfortunately all too common in this day and age).
Find someone else!!!
ALWAYS get a second opinion!!

I was first referred to Dr. Turtel in 1997 by a friend of mine. The words that caught my attention were “He will listen to what you say, he will order the appropriate tests, he will present you with your options and then ultimately make his recommendation.” My right knee problems go back to 1985 when I blew my knee out by ripping 3 of the 4 ligaments and the knee capsule. The operation that took place in PA, which was NOT performed by Dr. Turtel, proceeded to get infected with a staph infection and ultimately a bone infection. The infection eroded much of the cartilage and the doctors pretty much guaranteed me that I would require a knee replacement by the time I was 35. In 1997, I was 32 when I went to see Dr. Turtel thinking that my knee replacement was coming 3 years early. During my appointment, unlike many other doctors, he was not rushing to see the next patient and I had his full attention. After the consultation and the testing, Dr. Turtel assured me that the knee replacement was not needed and he would not perform that operation until it was absolutely necessary. He proceeded to clean my knee out which eliminated the pain at that time. Over the next 15 years, he had to clean it out a couple more times. On a separate occasion, when I had fluid on my knee that was causing a great amount of pressure, he drained it without a problem. I am now 47 and still have not had that knee replacement thanks to Dr. Turtel. In addition to my knee, when my shoulder was “freezing up” about 5 years ago, he fixed the cartilage and it has felt fine since. In 2011, he treated the tendinitis in my elbow and in October he relieved the pain in my other knee by trimming the cartilage. Over the years I have referred at least 4 other people to him. I would have to tell anyone that reads this, my ultimate trust for Dr. Turtel is that my 11 year old son who plays football, travel baseball and travel basketball became a patient of Dr. Turtel's in 2011 due to a knee injury. My last note of praise goes to Diane and Rosa who follow up with all of the insurances and coordinate the logistics with the hospitals. Thank you for the great care!

I first went to Dr, Turtel back in 1996, when at that time I had about 15 degrees bending capibility in my right knee due to a awful dr. at another local hospital.
Since then after numerous surgeries to fix what the incompetent doctor did, today I am able to play on two softball teams and run around like nothing ever happend to me.
Today I still have to have maintenace surgeries, but within a week I am good as new.
I it weren't for Dr. Turtel I would be a 42 year old cripple. Words actually cannot express my gratitude. Thanks again Dr. T for everything.

I had been intermittently experiencing knee pain brought on by running for about two years. The first thing he did was accuse me of going off on a “rant” when I tried to explain my history. He concluded that there was nothing wrong with my knee and that my pain was probably caused my inflammation due to underdeveloped leg muscles. He recommended a series of stretching and strengthening exercises, and the pain did subside for a while (although that’s more likely due to the fact that I stopped running altogether). After a few months of doing the exercises and avoiding any physical activity that would aggravate the problem further, I began having sharp pains in my knee unlike anything I had felt before. I sought a second opinion, and the PA IMMEDIATELY identified SEVERAL problems with my knee, including Iliotibial Tendonitis, malalignment in the patella and loose ligaments. I was told I needed an MRI and 6 weeks of physical therapy!! Dr. Turtel is a knee expert, so how this could have all passed him by is perplexing. I suspect by his bedside manner that he was having a bad day or was rushed and could not be bothered to examine me thoroughly.

A great experience. From his office manager Diane to a great consult, the whole thing got me back to trusting doctors again.
Luckily, I don't need surgery even though I walked into the office convinced I did because another Dr. told me that was the thing to do.
A couple of weeks of specific therapy that was suggested was all it took!

I saw Dr. Turtel after months of severe shoulder pain. Another Ortho was quick to dismiss me with tendonitis. Dr. Turtel discovered a quarter sized calcium deposit. He removed the calcium deposit and adhesions I had due to frozen shoulder. This man changed my quaility of life. He did not push me into having surgery, said it was completely up to me, gave me all the facts to make an informed decision. I have been living pain free for over 5 years.
He is one of the best docs I have met. Didn't feel rushed like the previous guys I saw, and my surgery was fantastic. Did everything under local when others wanted a full anesthesia, and the recovery was quicker than my therapist thought possible.
Two thumbs up.
