Upon entering Swing 46, the host approached my girlfriend and I and told us that it would be a $12 cover to go into the other room and dance, as well as a 2 drink minimum, or we could just sit at the bar and there would be NO Cover and NO minimum. Since there wasn't anyone dancing to begin with, we decided to sit at the bar. When our bill came, there was one 12 dollar cover charge added on. When we asked about it he said that the cover charge was for the music and he had given us a 2 for 1 deal (This guy is really generous...And for no reason!!!WOW!). He then invited us to participate in a dance lesson that was supposed to start shortly in the other room (which we were suddenly allowed to go into?) and promptly left the restaurant and went outside. Just before receiving our check, he sat another couple down and told them the SAME deal, $12 cover to go into the other room and dance, as well as a 2 drink minimum, or they could just sit at the bar and there is NO Cover and NO minimum. When we left the restaurant, I said goodnight as we passed by the host and he completely ignored us. (Perhaps he felt uncomfortable because he had lied to us. I guess we'll never know!) If I am not mistaken, isn't it a host's job to greet and bid farewell to the customers? If you plan to go to this treacherously shady place, be sure to have written documentation of every word that comes out of your host's mouth.

I was here first about a month ago for dinner. They had an awesome pre-fix food menu before 7pm. Our food was really good. However, my complaint- or waitress that night SUCKED! She was totally inattentive- meaning empty water glasses, empty bread basket, dirty dishes!!! on our table; apart from TAKING our order, she was sitting at the bar more than she stopped by our table) There was another waiter and a bus boy (i think he was) that were SOOO much more attentive to our needs that she was!! And then, to top it all off, she put an AUTOMATIC 18% TIP on our bill!!!! And when we had a talk with her, she told us she didnt understand!) so she took the tip off and we wanted to leave her NOTHING for her ""service"" but we were told that all the waiters split the tip at the end of the night, so for those men that actually WERE attentive to us, we left some form of a tip. (so i partially write this because i am hoping management reads this and takes necessary action for their staff that does no work but collect tip! apart from this woman, all the other staff members we encountered that evening as well as the food - great!)

We were given a flyer to this bar and went along the following eventing, we had 4 main courses 3 puddings drinks for 4. The dancing was very entertaining, not sure if the young couples were affliated with the bar or just enjoyed the dancing? Our bill came in at $304.00 which included 18% service charge and $15.00 p/head for entertainment!! we couldn't see the band or see the dancing unless you call a black & white cctv feed on a small portable tv a view, the owner/door woman? seated a large party next to our table opposite the bar taking seating from guests who were up dancing, when I advised I thought someone was sitting there I was told very rudely that they aren't now and had their jacket thrown in my direction, to add insult to injury she asked to buy a cigarette from me so I advised it would cost her $60.00 the same amount we had been ripped off for, she had nothing to say, i checked all the details o/side the bar and there is no mention of p/head payment, so just beware of hidden costs.

We went to the restaurant for meal, entertainment and atmosphere. Got all in spades. The staff were attentive and helpful. The food was great (recommend the Rigatoni & Shrimps). The music was spot on, and if you enjoy people watching, the crowd on the dance floor didn't fail to entertain you.
Then the bill arrived, putting aside the extortionate price of the drinks, we were stung with a $12 per head charge for the music (which isn't publicised anywhere) and a large percentage service charge. Suddenly a nice evening out for 4 people was coming in at nearly $300!!!!!
When we questioned the charges the waiter was unhelpful, so he got the owner. She turned out to be an arrogant lady, who had a well versed selection of answers to try and justify the charges (obviously we are not the only ones to have complained about the charges!). We felt ripped off and treated disrespectfully. We refused to pay the $12 per head and left what we thought was a fair tip (probably too much considering her attitude).
If you're going to visit this restaurant, you will have a great meal and a good time, but be aware that you will be heavily charged for the privilege.

Very cooool bar. It has a lcompfy atmosphere to it and the bar tenders are all super cool, nice people. They are friendly to everyone, not just the regulars or the people they know. The live music they get in there is really good, jazz stuff that makes you wonder how these talented people aren't super famous! Great spot in NY!

i have to give swing 46 an mediocre rating because it's an average of two parts: the food, which was overpriced for what it is, and the music, which was wonderful. my bf and i went for dinner and dancing on a sat night- there is a lesson at 9 before the dancing begins which is nice but i suspect that everyone else there did not actually need the lesson except for us! we were those amateurs all over the dance floor! the waiter was very accommodating and though we weren't in the main room (we made reservations that day and i was told on the phone that we could not be seating in the main room) because it wasn't very crowded we were able to keep our table the whole night to come back for drinks between sets. i cant see how other reviewers complain about this - if you make your reservations late how are they supposed to give you a table that someone else has already reserved?? anyway, there were some negative parts of the experience- namely, the food. my scallops were good, but not $26 good, and my bf's medium rare steak was burnt to a crisp and after waiting almost an hour for the food he was not in the mood to send it back and wait another hour to eat. despite that disappointment, however, we had a fun night and it's a great place for a special occasion date if you like this sort of thing. next time we'll skip dinner and just pay the $15 cover to drink and dance.

Went to Swing 46 after discovering it here on Citysearch. My wife and I, along with a group of friends had a great time. Nice ambiance, very tasty food and great music. A pefect night all around. We've recommended to other friends who also came back with high praise. Fun Time!

Went to this ""Swing"" club last weekend and the experience for lack of a better word was awful. Our reservations which were set for 8:30PM were not even close to being ready when we got there at exactly 8:30. We had to wait 45 minutes-1 hour before we were seated. During this long delay, we were charged a ""dancing"" fee of $15 (we'll talk more about that later) and told to hang out at the bar. The bartender served probably the worst quality of wine I have ever tasted and the ""normal"" drinks were water-downed and tasteless.
Finally we are ready to be seated for dinner. Do we sit in the band room where all the action is and where they highly advertise on their website........NO we are seated in the front part of the place by the window. We were told by the highly unprofessional, arrogant manager that ""there is no more space in the main room and your reservations were made yesterday anyways"".
So here we were, sitting in the front with all of the music and dancing in the back room and remember we paid the $15 ""dancing fee""
The food was way way over priced and not too good. I must of drank 2 gallons of water since the food was so salty. The service was very slow and seemed to only have one waiter in the whole place. I must of looked at my empty plate for 30 minutes or so.
At this point we were not feeling to great and wanted to leave. We requested a refund of our $15 each since we did not dance nor step foot in the main room.
We were told since we were listening to the music anyways they would still have to charge us half, which was preposterous.
I was never as happy as I was when I left this horrible experience and place.
Please save your $$$ and look elsewhere for entertainment, drinks and food!

I love Swing 46! As a swing dancer, this is the perfect spot to come for the $10 cover to hear the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra (awesome jazz band!), have a drink and dance with friends. For all you non-dancers, there is often a free swing dance lesson following the first set. The atmosphere here is definitely what you make it... and in my experience has been a fabulous place for friends to meet hang out and talk in the back room, enjoy the band and dance in the main room. The few dishes I have had there have been quite good, but slightly pricy... however this is expected for Times Square proximity in New York.

Sunday night is the night to visit Swing 46. The dance floor is rarely crowded with amateurs, and the band on Sundays is the best. The Champian Fulton Trio provide great music for dancing, and especially for listening. The food and drinks are excellent - and the service is great on Sundays when it's less busy. Less tourists on Sundays too. I highly recommend Sunday nights at Swing 46. Champian plays every Sunday from 8:30 to 11:30 PM.

This place has the potential to be a truly unique and inspired NYC experience. The space itself provides for an intimate evening of listening and dancing to some of the city's best big band/jazz musicians on a nightly basis. Unfortunately, the energy and excitment of the musicians and dancers jamming in the main room is marred by the apathy of the staff and managment which bleeds patrons as soon as they enter the venue. Having been to S46 several times in recent years, it seems like the cover charge has gotten steeper, the drinks more expensive, and the music sets shorter. Also, bring your own mixology primer, as I believe the bartender desperately needs a copy.

I'm not sure the other three reviewers went to the same club that I did. If you actually want to see the band you have to have dinner (food = awful and any price). Otherwise you are forced to stay in the bar (a room away) after paying a cover mind you, and then suffer the amateur bartender who can't make drinks and has eight liquor store wines to choose from. This is a great place to ruin a live music experience. Thanks for nothing.
