Pomodoro, has been a neighborhood favorite for years. The beautifully prepared Italian classics and excellent service has earned this restaurant a loyal following of Upper West Siders. Beige walls adorned with decorative ceramic plates from Italy, a ceiling trellis with hanging grapes and red and white-checkered tablecloths evoke the feeling of an authentic Italian trattoria. The street side outdoor café is the place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine and savor the antipasti while watching the people stride by. The home-made quality of Pomodoro's specialty dishes are the talk of the town. As you feast your eyes on the menu selections, the very friendly staff gets you started with delectable homemade foccacia and a basket of bread. The beautifully scripted menu will entice you to try the Antipasti, favorites like Calamare Fritti, fresh Mozzarella with tomato, basil and olive oil, or the house specialty, Pappa al Pomodoro, a Tuscan stale of herbed tomato soup, which is served in a scooped-out loaf of round bread. Large bowls of piping hot pastas like Mafeldina al Sugo di Carne, a fresh fettuccine in a rich, meaty tomato sauce or Ravioli alla Aragosta, stuffed with lobster meat in a light cream sauce, keep people coming back for more. Stella seafood selections include Zuppe di Pesce and Risotto Pescatore. Traditional Italian fare like Veal Scallopine sautéed with wild Rugantino, chicken breast topped with goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes and Portobello mushrooms in a sherry wine sauce and Salmone al Capperi, salmon topped with capers. Servers will always describe the specials of the evening in mouth-watering detail. Enjoy homemade desserts with an Italian accent like with a luscious cup of cappuccino or a strong espresso for the perfect finale to a truly delightful meal. PomodoroBuon Appettito!

Best Italian in the area!!

I have always enjoyed this place and know when I have friends visiting we can go here and the food & service is always consistantly stellar. Recently, I went here solo (yes I was craving their fresh pasta) and as I walked up to the door and said ""Table for one"", I realized it was prime time on a Sat night!! I was so embarrasssed -but guess what?? They treated me as if I was a party of eight - full service & everything. I love the bread & oil here, and the daily specials never fail.

Excellent, reliable Italian

I have eaten here at least 50 times. The food is simply amazing, the service is excellent as well, the staff are extremely friendly. Unfortunately, the entire UWS also knows this, because the restaurant is always PACKED with a wait list. The Penne alla Grappa is the best dish in the house, but it's hard to choose, especially when they tell you the specials for the night. Halloween is a fun night, the waitstaff dresses up. Pomodoro even has a mention or two on old Seinfeld episodes (""Pomodoro is where you go when you break up with people""). 5 STARS, easy.

Aside from occasionally feeling a bit ""crowded"" (and it should be) what can be said for this excellent Italian UWS favorite. Peter the host, and owner, makes you feel right at home. ALL dishes are beautifully prepared and are large in size. Wine by the glass (house wine is a really large pour, and is of decent quality). Wine list is also adequate. Mixed drinks are fine. But it always comes back to the food, the wonderful food. Several other reviewers have noted ""consistency"" as a wonderful quality of this restaurant and they are correct. The only inconsistency might be the service, but even that has improved of late and it wasn't bad to begin with.
Go there and you won't be sorry.

Excellent Neighborhood Place WIth Great Service

Pomodoro Restaurant is one of the most popular places to eat on the Upper West Side. The food and service are always excellent. One of the best Italian places in the city.

No frills - fab food!!

Very unassuming from the outside but inside is a warm, homey atmosphere, simple but delicious Italian classics and great service. There are tons of little italian joints like this on the UWS - but this is one of the best ones. And the price is great too!!

This place is the restaurant to go to for good, consistent Italian food. Nothing on the menu is weird or fusion like, but it just tastes good and the drinks are mixed well. Nice homey place to take a small party to or your significant other for a romantic dinner.

My favorite restaurant in NYC

I've been diing here for 10 years and have never been disappointed. Great food at reasonable prices. I take all of my out of town guests here and have never regretted it. Peter (the owner and host) is the best.

Molto bene!

I have been to this restaurant many many times and have NEVER been disappointed. The hostess & service are the best that I have ever experienced in NYC. The food is delicious and the ambience is wonderful. Only bummer is that they don't take reservations.

Former New Yorker Missing Pomodoro

I left New York a year ago and moved to Colorado. I miss everything about New York but the two things I miss the most are the restaurants and shopping in Soho. Out of all the restaurants I ate at (and I covered quite a lot of ground) my staple, the place I crave more than anything, is Pomodoro Rosso. I used to take every person who came to visit me there, and I suggest it to every person who ever goes there. I am coming out to visit this summer and you better believe, the first place I go for dinner will be this place!

Tasty Pasta.

Big plate pasta makes everybody happy!! Try the spaghetti Alfred. It's not in the menu.

A good fallback

This place is great if you want homey, good and hearty Italian food. Like the other reviewers, there is nothing that knocks out down on the menu but that's what you need once in a while and Pomodoro delivers. The ambiance is warm and inviting and the drinks are done well. I always have a great time when we visit here. Don't forgo the bread sticks and olive oil.. I've never had better.

the best

This is probably my favorite restaurant in the city! I went there once just to try and now I go every week. The specials are outstanding, as is the pasta with ricotta and the maltadena with meatsauce is outstanding. Even their bread is outstanding. The wait staff can get busy, but they usually have a smile on their face.

A Great Italian Restaurant

...Worth trying. Nothing fancy, yet nothing ordinary. It's just really good Italian home-made quality fare. Pastas are your best bet. It's really good! They are made fresh and flavorful. Good atmosphere. The service was outstanding. I spent $50 for an app, an entree, an excellent bottle of wine to share, and the tip, so I didn't feel robbed in any way. It was worth every dollar spent. I would come here again.

Good stuff

Great neighborhood place. Nothin' fancy or too inventive... just huge portions of really good italian food. I've gone several times and always had a great experience!

on my list of regulars

i tried this place for the first time a few months ago. since then i've been there an embarrassing number of times. it's a great place to go to for great italian food without a lot of fuss. the menu is extensive and there are daily specials. the host is always very friendly and courteous. i've never had a bad experience. only bummer is that there's usually at least a 20 minute wait. i usually spend about $35/person for a drink, shared appetizer, entree, shared dessert, tax and tip.
