I took our dog there for a trial day and I would say NO NO NO NO NO.

When I brought him in, the guy at the front desk barely said a word. He didn't make any effort to pet or say hello to my dog.

I wasn't offered a tour and felt extremely uncomfortable with that.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT waste your money on people who will have no understanding for your pet's or your own personal needs , even though you pay good money.

I REALLY wanted to like this place!! It is close to me and convenient!! I was pretty excited to try it out.

When my dog came out of there, he was not himself at all. He seemed severely traumatized.
I did not want to bring my dog back to a place where he was VERY unhappy in the first place.

I asked people on the street and at the dog park on 52th Street about pets at play, many people have told me that the owner recently have changed the employees that have no idea what they are doing.

The only place you should take your dog in NYC!

I have taken my dog to Pets at Play for over a year now. I am a professional dog trainer and I know how well they take care of my dog. The staff is amazing - when I bring in my dog he goes straight for them and they give him a big hug and off he goes with them his tail wagging like crazy! He always gets very upset if I start to walk away from him but he doesn't even look back at me when I drop him off. And he is so tired from playing when I pick him up!
I also foster dogs and have left them there and it was the best thing for them. They were socialized and loved. I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else!

Poor service

Not recommended. My dog was injured there twice and the staff claimed they did not know what happened.
1. The dog's ear was ripped and they did not tell me. Noticed it when I took the dog home and had to go to emergency for stitches.
2. The dog's leg was dislocated from the hip and the ball joint was broken.
They claimed they did not know what happened. So that tells me they do not watch the dogs. Dog is recuperating after 5 months !! and $7K of expenses.
As a result, the dog has a permanent limp for the rest of her life at 3 years old.
The Vets, breeder and other dog day cares can not figure out how the dog could have broken her leg that way. They all concurred I should not use this place.
This place does not monitor the dogs !!!

Horrible owner! Ugly looking place!

Beware! horrible owner! Great workers horrible owner.
Referring to ""the guy"" as a business owner is horrible insult to anyone who runs a small business.
The owner is rude and unprofessional . The workers are great but I have no idea how would someone work for this guy...

Taking a tour of this place, it is a very ugly looking place....not where I want my dog in.
There are so many other places in the city so STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.

Happy Puppy's!

We've been bringing our puppy here since the day she got her final vaccinations. My husband and I walked her over from the vets office as we were anxious to socialize her from the beginning. To say our dog is active and in need of exercise and stimulation would be an enormous understatement. My husband and I were also hoping to wear the dog out on the days that our work schedules coincided and we couldn't get her out for the HOURS that she really needed.

The owner and staff spent a significant amount of un-rushed time getting to know our dog and allowing her to get to know them. The morning of our first full-day visit, our pup, who had barely been outside for walks practically tore down 10th avenue to get to Pets-at-Play. She jumped up on one of the handlers and never looked back.

Honestly, I expected her to stink like the inside of a shabby pet supply store or for her to have picked up some horrible new habit at the very least. What I got was a happy, pooped-puppy at 7:30 that night. Not an odor, flea or poop-eating habit. She gobbled down dinner and fell asleep in 10 minutes. We had to find a creative way to wake her up for her end-of-the-night walk she was so exhausted.

She's boarded there and been groomed there. When we were having difficulties finding the perfect food to feed her they made a fantastic recommendation that made all our lives, so much better (Flatulence may be cute in theory, but not so cute when it means an upset stomach and a walk at 4am!)

Get to know them here. They are all really great. Often, our dog will run up behind random people on the street and jump up on them in a burst of doggy joy. It's never a surprise to me when they turn around and it's one of the amazing people at Pets-at-Play.

Boarding A++++++

if you love your dog like I do, then rest assured this is where they need to be if you need boarding.

I have boarded my dog in Pets at Play many times. I was so worried the first time I left my dog there as she had been a rescue, and I was so afraid she would think I was deserting her. She did great!!!! when we went to pick her up she did not want to leave . It has freed me up to be able to go on vacations and get out of town with no worries about my baby being taken care of :) Thanks Pets at Play team, you are great!!

An explanation of our policies

After having the previous post brought to my attention I felt that offering a rebuttal would be only fair. We do make efforts to contact each applicant that we hear from in as prompt a manner as possible. However we usually receive applications weeks and sometimes months ahead of time, giving us the time to contact each client and ascertain their dog?s individual needs.

Upon receiving the phone call I quickly reviewed the application and apologized that she had not yet received a follow up call. Upon mentioning that she was interested in boarding with us, I informed her that we mandate a behavioral evaluation prior to accepting a dog, The policy is listed on the ?Boarding? page of our website, under the heading? Boarding Policies?.

We mandate the visit prior to boarding or accepting new daycare dogs, this provides us the opportunity to observe each dog and to ensure that we are able to provide the best care possible. This policy is in place to allow us to watch for behavior that might put the other dogs in our playgroup at risk and likewise to ensure that any new dogs have a few hours to become familiar with our staff and facility.

During the conversation the client had stated that she was currently at work and unable to bring her dog for the evaluation. I asked ?Do you have any family members that are able to bring the dog in for the evaluation? Any friends that might be able to??. I also asked as it is a service I have seen offered by doormen in the past, whether a doorman or other employee in her building would be willing to walk her dog to our facility.

At the time of the conversation our company vehicle was already on the way to the prescheduled drop off?s to our daycare clients. This unfortunately prevented us from accommodating a same day pick up.

To wrap up this posting I would like to speculate that the vast majority of our clients approve of the fact that we are not in the habit of blindly accepting new dogs into our facility. We instead pride ourselves on taking the time to look at each dog individually to ensure the best possible experience for our dogs and staff.

Really Happy with the service

After reading the last review I had to comment about pets at play.
I'm so happy that they are doing a 4 hours evaluation.

My personal opinion is that if you get upset about someone who wants to evaluate your dog that mean that you are hiding something about your dog.

I sent an application and called them at the same day, the next day I brought my German shepherd to a 4 hours evaluation (and did not pay for it), Pets at Play stuff gave me a full update about my dog, who did he play with, how did he behave around other dogs and I loved it, its showed to me that the stuff actually spend some time with my dog, they even told me that my dog did his business in the play room. Since I just rescued my dog and had no idea how does he behave around people and dogs.

I am very happy with the service and very happy that they don?t just accept any dog and actually ask questions and very careful before accepting a dog.
How can I complain about that??
Great policy to do a 4 hours evaluation, great service to give me update about my dog and great service not to accept any dog.

Unprofessional! I filled out a form to enroll my dog in doggy daycare on Monday morning, but still had not heard anything by Wednesday midday. I gave Pets at Play a call and was told that they could not accept my dog without a four hour evaluation. Since I was hoping to use their services on Thursday and it was after noon on Wednesday, there was no way I could bring our dog in. Rather than acknowledging that this problem was of their own creation and trying to help out by doing a shorter evaluation, coming by to pick up or drop off my pup themselves (they suggested my doorman do it -- what?!), or simply being willing to accept him for care for one day and accommodate any issues that might come up (wouldn't they have to do that in the four hour evaluation anyway?), that was the end of the matter.

If they had at least listed this policy on their website, I would have followed up after not hearing from them for over a day and a half.

I guess I'm glad this came up first thing so I didn't spend any money on such unprofessional service.

My dog's heaven on earth!

Pets At Play is my dog's heaven on earth! We have to avoid it when on walks in the neighborhood if he's not going there otherwise he tries to pull us there.
While the owner seems a little rough around the edges, once you get to know him, he's a big teddy bear and always wants what's best for the dogs. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and loves your dogs just like you if you were there. They separate them by size and temperment and even keep track of which dogs like to play with each other so they can have playdates there.
When my boyfriend and I moved in together, we stayed in Manhattan mainly for Pets at Play.
If I can't be with my dog, there is no place else I'd rather have him be!
