Not impressed

I have heard rave reviews about this restaurant so I went with my husband and some friends to check it out last week. I have to say it was basic average Italian food. We had a decent bottle of wine, the bread was fresh and we and they gave what looked like a tomato flan accompany the bread. For appetizers we had salads and shared the Calamari. I had spaghetti with tomatoes and fresh thyme, my husband had the Pappardelle. Our friends had a seafood special and Gnocchi. Again, nothing to rave about but was decent. For dessert my husband and I shared their ""famous"" cheesecake which was very good and did taste homemade. The one big turn off was that the waiters rushed us throughout our entire meal. We barely put our fork down and they took our plates. We didn't even finish our coffee and they took our cups away. The waiter said they had people waiting and needed our table. It was a week night and the place was full but was shocked at how they pushed you out the door. Again, the food wasn't horrible but wasn't good enough that I would run back or recommend. They don't stand out among some of the other restaurants in the city.

Pleasant Friday night dinner, fresh organic food

The location is a little odd, as you are walking through the stalls of canal street you feel a little dirty and start to question what to expect once you get to this restaurant. However, once there you have just barely passed the neighborhood threshold into Tribeca and feel instantly relieved. The outdoor seating was cutely lit with votives and outdoor string lights and you forget about where you are. The food was quite good. I had the papparedelle which was good, but nothing that really stood out to me. However, the winner was the special of the night: tagliatte with lobster tail in a spicy tomato sauce. Very nice. When ordering the special might want to check on the price before deciding, we were charged with an unexpected one.

Fabulous

I am glad that this restaurant is too classy to accomodate idiots who try to negotiate menu prices and ask for an avacado at an italian restaurant. This place is wonderful, and also seems to deter the tacky riffraff, so even better.

Is that accent real or just bad acting classes?

Our server was rude and insulting. When asked if the kitchen had an avocado (due to a restricted diet) he dramatically (and rudely) informed us that avocados are a MEXICAN fruit and this was an italian restaurant where they only serve ITALIAN fruit. In addition to rushing us on our order and snapping the menus out of our hands I asked for an amended item on the menu so as not to spend $27 on the dish and was told 'no no no....not $27' but guess what.......when the bill came......he charged me $27! I am all for good food......but not at the price of this type of service. There are too many great restaurants in this neighborhood that have great food and great service.

best cheesecake... EVER

I went there tonight for dinner, and everything was perfect, from the appetizers, we had delicious mussels and stracchino bruschetta, wow..... the pasta al limone was really delicious, and the meat pasta was really good too. After MAtteo, our waiter told us to try the dessert, he insisted he chose. We let him choose for us, when i saw the cheescak i was somehow disappointed, i don't like cheesecake, i am from near milano and i really never had a good cheesecake. I was SOO wrong.... their cheesecake was soo delicoiusly light and good, that i have to take back all the bad comments i made about cheesecakes in general. BRAVI... i will definately will go back

Rustic and romantic. Location is a little odd and in between neighborhoods.
Fabulous Italian wines. Excellent service.

My favorite NYC Tuscan spot

When my husband and I visit we re-live our Tuscan honeymoon and all the wonderful food we had. We've been 3 or 4 times, and it's never disappointed, and have dragged our parents there. They're fussy eaters, but raved about this place.

Favorite Restaurant!

I recently traveled 2.5 hours to bring my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner. We have been doing that for the past 3 years! We love this place so much, and have not found a better restaurant yet! They always have a way of making people feel as though they are the only people there. You will not be disappointed with anything on the menu! Try a Limoncello Martini with dessert!

Rude Rude

As a local to the neighborhood I was very disappointed with the rude waiter. ""you need a reservation"" I don't think so ...knowing if they are going for a status clientele...Put it this way, my boyfriend and I are much better looking than the dinner crowd last Saturday night.

Try the Brunch!

Fresh Fresh Fresh! food is outstanding, and w/ all the over priced blah Italian places in NYC this one is a stand out. We went for brunch on Sunday morning after staying the weekend @ near by hotel. Service was fantastic, my fritata was perfection. By far the most satisfying meal of the entire weekend. We keep on going back and have recomended it to several friends, they love it too!

Owner/General Manager is rude but overall ok

My husband and I happened into this place before going to a party in Tribeca. We were escorted to our seat (outside on the sidewalk next to the pretty brush). The owner came out waving his arms and getting mad at us for sitting there saying it was reserved. We comely said no problem, we were told to sit there but we'll move. He was overly aggressive about the whole situation, but our waiter sided with us and had great service from him from that point forward. The Muscules were great, my goat cheese was good but was pre-made and served too cold. We both had the Gnocci and after salting it a bit, it was delicious and light. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area.

Good fresh food and friendly service

Been here a few times and have always loved it. The food is fresh (I believe all the pasta is homemade) and delicious. The amibiance is nice, condusive to groups or a more intimate setting. Our service has always been excellent. I'm sure we'll be going back here many more times.

Great Disappointment

I just returned from this Restaurant. I normally don't write reviews about places, but because of the bad experience I had to share my thoughts on this mediocare place:

1. FOOD: way below average for Italian, especially in NYC. The ingredients were cheap and low quality.

2. Ambiance: Prouds itself of being homey. But if that's what you want you should just stay home.

3. Service: BAD! We only saw our waiter once, we he took our order. The busboys did the rest.

4. Crowd: Tourists and Jersey girls. Too much big hair and not enough finess.

5. Conclusion: Avoid this over-rated expensive place.

great food!

i hate to be the only person who doesn't submit a 100% endorsement of this place, but i should be honest. i think the food was great, the service was great and the service was absolutely impeccable. however, i thought it was a little pricey and that the portions were a little small. overall very good though.

A jewel in the crown

In a city of many excellent Italian restaurants (and even more bad ones), Pepolino deserves special mention. In a casual atmosphere just outside of Soho, the very inviting staff attend to your every need as you dine on an atypical selection of Northern Italian cuisine. The food is exceptionally fresh and there is nothing on the menu that wouldn't please most culinary senses. I have to mention the meatballs - wow. The wine list is short, but provides good diversity, with several little gems (particularly the Tuscans). And whatever you do, do not forego the cheesecake. Best in NYC.

amazing!

a block too far for the prada-clad crowd to trot from the trendier part of west broadway, this place is a mellow mix of romantic daters, regulars, and small groups who enjoy the great food, exceptional service, and authentically italian atmosphere.

Outstanding!

My boyfriend and I were in New York a while back. We were staying in the neighborhood and found this place to be, above and beyond, any other restaurant we visited. The food was really excellent (we ate there twice in 5 days) and the service was courteous and prompt! We still talk about it. . .

Peppy Pepolino

If you hate places that are filled with pretense where you are consistently disappointed yet over-charged, love being treated like family, and enjoy wonderful northern Italian cuisine and great wine, don't miss this jewel.
